The grinding plant at a cement factory is used to
reduce the particle size distribution of various
materials such as raw meal, fuel or clinker to set
parameters. In a sense, a grinding plant uses
energy (through milling) to create fineness and it
is the production personnel's aim to optimize the
fineness with the production rate whilst consu-
ming as little energy as possible in the process.*
From an energy-efficiency viewpoint, the grinding
process is extremely inefficient; only 5% of the
total energy spend is transformed into additional
surface area whilst the remaining 95% is lost
through heat during the process. One of the cau-
ses of this low efficiency in ball-mills is as result
of re-agglomeration of fine particles together
with the covering of the surface of the grinding
media (balls). During the process, a steady built-
up of particles around the media will result in an
ever-decreasing mill performance and results in
an even lower energy efficient process.
Today, energy cost is an important cost factor in
the manufacture of cement as 75% of all energy
used is used in grinding of raw meal, fuel and
clinker. It is therefore top priority for cement
manufacturers to be looking at optimizing their
mill performance, especially decreasing particle
agglomeration. To achieve this, they use organic
products: grinding-aids.

L’atelier de broyage en cimenterie a pour fonc-
tion de réduire la granulométrie des différents
produits, matières crues, combustible et clinker,
afin de leur permettre de répondre aux critères
de qualité exigés. L’atelier de broyage est donc
en ce sens un transformateur qui consomme
de l’énergie pour créer de la finesse. L’enjeu de
cette opération est le "zéro perte", qui permet
de répondre aux objectifs de finesse avec le
débit maximum, en réduisant au strict minimum
la consommation énergétique de l’atelier*.

Du point de vue industriel, le broyage est une
étape extrêmement pénalisante ; elle représente
un rendement énergétique très faible : 95 % de
l’énergie fournie au broyeur est dissipée sous
forme de chaleur, le reste servant à la création
de nouvelles surfaces. L’une des causes de la
faible efficacité des broyeurs à boulets est la
réagglomération des fines particules entre elles
ainsi que le recouvrement des corps broyants
(boulets). En effet, si les stades initiaux du
broyage sont contrôlés par l’agglomération de
la poudre, l’efficacité du broyage décroît régu-
lièrement avec l’accumulation de fines agglo-
mérées dans le broyeur. Or l’énergie électrique
est un facteur majeur du coût de production
des usines.
L’ensemble des ateliers de broyage d’une
cimenterie (cru, combustible et clinker) repré-
sente en moyenne 70 à 75 % de sa consom-
mation électrique. L’élimination ou l’atténua-
tion du phénomène d’agglomération reste
donc parmi les priorités de tout cimentier et
pour cela il fait appel aux produits organiques :
les agents de mouture.

correlation between the evolution of specific
surface area and the energy (time) of grinding.
In general this is true at the beginning of the
grinding process when the "Blaine Specific
Surface Area" (B.S.S.A.) is still low.
However, in practice it has been proven that
this correlation is no longer true beyond a
certain fineness and the energy used is lost in
heat. The point where this happens is when
the agglomeration of fine particles starts and
signals the start of the "non-productive" stage
of grinding (see graph 1).

In short, agglomeration reduces the efficiency
of the mill. This phenomenon is characterized
by an increase in energy consumption whilst
maintaining constant Blaine.
The extent of agglomeration depends on:
■ the specific characteristics of the materials to
be ground,
■ the operating parameters of the mill,
■ the efficiency and distribution of
the grinding media,
■ the fineness of the cement particles,
■ the internal operating conditions of the mill
(humidity, temperature, ventilation,
condition of the armour plating, etc).

hence the importance of grinding-aids.
The latter enables the partial neutralization
of surface charges which have developped
during milling.
Although the prime use of grinding-aids are to reduce agglomeration of cement
particles, their use will also assist in:
■ the total or partial elimination of
the "coating" effect on the media,
■ an improvement in the separator efficiency
due to increased fluidity of fine particles,
■ a decrease in pack-set problems in storage
silos and bulk delivery trucks,
