Organising an Essay
The template below outlines the basic structure of a short academic essay, which
is what you will be required to write for Writing Task 2 of the IELTS Writing Test.

Introduction
General or neutral statement about the topic.

(optional) Less general statement about the topic.

Thesis statement of intent; what you intend to argue in your essay.

1st Argument
Topic sentence – introduces the subject and what you intend to say about it in
the rest of the paragraph. This should reflect directly to the thesis statement.

Supporting arguments – evidence, proof and examples.

2nd Argument
Topic sentence – introduces the subject and what you intend to say about it in
the rest of the paragraph. This should reflect directly to the thesis statement.

Supporting arguments – evidence, proof and examples.

3rd Argument
Topic sentence – introduces the subject and what you intend to say about it in
the rest of the paragraph. This should reflect directly to the thesis statement.

Supporting arguments – evidence, proof and examples.

Conclusion
Summary of, or reference to your arguments, which reflects the logic of the
arguments.

Statement(s) offering a solution, prediction, recommendation or result.
