colleges for the B.Sc.(IT) Semester VI examination and the following have
been forwarded to the University of Mumbai for kind consideration.

At the end, the suggested distribution of marks to be followed during the

conduct of Sem VI University exam has also been provided. Please make a
careful note of it.

Please follow the ethics of our group and do not provide the soft copy of
these reports to students although you may well communicate the
decisions taken in the meetings to them.
Paper 1 : C# (CSharp)
1. The prescribed book will be followed as a main book. (i.e Programming in C# by
E Balagurusamy)
2. The topic given in any other book and not available in the prescribed one should
be avoided in the Examination Question Paper.
3. Programs should be related to the topics available in Balagurusamy’s Book.
4. Programming exercise given in the book (at the end of each chapter) can be
followed as a sample program list.
5. The entire syllabus is divided into three parts and marks are assigned to each part
rather than to each chapter.

Paper II : Internet Technologies

1) For the Protocols, since the scope and limitations were not clear according to
the RFCs mentioned, in the syllabus, it was decided to follow the book
TCP/IP Protocol Suite by Behrouz Foruzan Chapters 7, 8, 12 and 13 only for
the entire section on protocols.

Problems could be asked related with IP header datagrams only given on page
nos. 128, 202 and 203.

For the benefit of the teaching faculty, the solutions of problems

for chapters 7, 8, 12 and 13 have been posted in the Files Section of
the muit Yahoo group. Please do not distribute these solutions
directly to the students as a request made by the Tata Mcgraw Hill
Representative.

2) Scope and limitations for Network Programming would be as under

Differences between TCP and UDP sockets.

For JAVA based Socket programming all classes along with constructs and
methods incorporated therein as covered in 4th semester (when JAVA was
compulsory) along with JAVA I/O must be known to student.

Additional classes to be covered in this semester are

INET address, Datagram Packet, Datagram Socket, Server and Server Socket.

Multithread constructs should not be asked.

3) As regards with Programming with RMI and Socket 7 is concerned, the

following programs are to be implemented using RMI or Socket 7.
(a) Time Server
(b) Echo Server
(c) Chat Window
(d) Program to find largest value in a block of data.

(i) Program for changing the case of letters in a given string.

4) It was decided that Object Serialisation – Marshalling and Unmarshalling

needs to be covered although not specifically mentioned in the syllabus.
Reference Sun Java Tutorial.
5) Security Manager in RMI programs has to be omitted as beyond the scope of
syllabus. Genesis of RMI (steps in installation) could be asked. FOR RMI
refer the website mentioned in the syllabus.

6) For CORBA architecture, refer the book Instant CORBA in 14 days by

Techmedia Publications for complete scope.

7) For Wireless LANS, refer the website

Keskus.hut.fi/opetus/s38118/s00/tyot/25/ as mentioned in the syllabus. Scope
limited to details as mentioned in the syllabus.

Regarding question paper pattern it was decided that

In question no. 1 which is compulsory (20 marks) the break up should be

1.a) Protocols - 5 marks
b) Socket 7 / RMI Program – 10 marks
c) Wireless Lans - 5 marks

In the remaining questions i.e. from 2 to 7 there should be two questions that should
contain programs worth 10 marks each.
In any one question, a program of RMI worth 10 marks should be asked.
In another question, a program on Socket 7 programming worth 10 marks should be
asked.

The weightage for the four major topics mentioned in the syllabus could be considered as
under :
1. Basic Network Protocols : 40%
2. Socket Programming : 10%
3. Remote Method Invocation and Introduction to Corba : 40%

Paper IV (Elective) : Strategic IT Management
The syllabus for the subject is not covered in any of the seven references mentioned in
the syllabus. However almost entire syllabus is covered in another good book Strategic
Management : Concepts and Cases by Thompson. from Tata Mcgraw Hill. It was
decided that the scope and limitations fall within the following chapters of the book and
hence it should be adopted as a single book for covering the curriculum.

Chapters 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 13.

Since Case studies in the subject are very large and hence cannot be asked in the theory
paper. However a case study for 25 marks should be covered as a part of internal
assessment for which books mentioned in the syllabus could be refered.

The format of the question paper would be as follows :

Q.1. is compulsory and should cover the entire syllabus.

Attempt any four questions from Q.2. to Q.7.
Each question carries 20 marks.
There would be minimum 2 and maximum 4 subquestions asked in each question.

Paper IV (Elective) : IT Laws and Patents

Details will be provided shortly.
SUGGESTED DISTRIBUTION OF MARKS FOR
CONDUCT OF PRACTICAL EXAMINATION
As Per the following Marks Distribution mentioned in the syllabus copy, University is
considering Project Report and Viva Voce of the Report as TWO Separate
Heads of Passing. Hence the Internal and External Examiner as well as student
should make a careful note of this.

Item Marks How to conduct Exam

Project report 100 Assessed jointly by internal
and External examiner.
Viva Voce of the report 100 Assessed jointly by internal
and External examiner.

For the Project Report assessment, suggested marks distribution scheme is

A) Documentation and Content Presentation : 50 marks

B) Analysis :
Problem Definition, Solutions Provided, Charts, Diagrams : 50 marks
Planning and Methodology, etc.

Total 100 marks

For Viva Voce of the Project, the 100 marks distribution could be considered as per the
following four heads.

A) Presentation Skills : 25 marks

B) Viva – voce : 25 marks
C) Project Quality / User Presentation / Innovative Technologies : 25 marks
D) Working and Functionality Testing : 25 marks

Total 100 marks

NOTE :

1. Both the Project Report assessment and Viva Voce of the Project is to be
accessed jointly by both the Internal Examiner (appointed by the University) and
the External Examiner.
2. No candidate would be allowed to appear for the Project Examination without
duly certified Project Report (his or her own copy).
3. Each student would be accessed for a maximum duration of around 30 mins,
during which for around 15 minutes or so, he is expected to give a demonstration
of the working project. The later 15 minutes would be devoted to assessment of
report and viva-voce.
