Comprehension Questions

Lesson One: Part I Photographs

Lesson Two: Part II Question & Response

Lesson Three: Part III Short Conversations

Lesson Four: Part IV Short Talks

LESSON ONE
PART I PHOTOGRAPHS

Overview
1. The first part of TOEIC® consists of twenty numbered photographs. Each photo
is introduced by a statement that tells you to look at a numbered photo. For
each photo, you will hear on tape four test sentences: (A), (B), (C) and (D).
You are asked by a narrator to select the sentence that best describes something
about the photo.

2. There is only a slight pause (about five to eight seconds) between each question,
and almost no pause between the four sentences within each question.

3. About seventy-five percent of the photos include a person or people. The rest
are of objects or places without people.

4. The main objective of Part 1 is to test the examinee's listening comprehension

of informal spoken English, in general, and his/her abilities to differentiate similar
sounding words, in particular. For instance, look at the example photo below:

For this photo, you may hear:

(A) There is a puppet in the chair.

(B) A puppy is in a sling.
(C) We can see many flowers.
(D) A puppy is on a swing.

Part I PHOTOGRAPHS 3
Strategy
1. Main idea questions: Try to identify what is going on in the photo and where
it was taken. Focus first on the largest items or people in the photo and then the
smaller details.

2. Distinguishing similar sounds: Listen very carefully to each word. Concentrate

on the pronunciation of each word, differentiating such problematic sounds as
"m" or "n ," "d" or "t," "r" or "l," etc.

3. Making assumptions: By identifying objects and actions in the photo, you will
be able to make assumptions about the occupations of the people in the photo
and what they will most likely do next. You can also make assumptions about
the location where the action is taking place. For instance, look at the photo
below:

We can see a man sitting on a bench. Since the bench appears to be in a railway
station, we can safely assume that he is waiting for a train.

4. Complete each question as quickly as possible: Always look at the photo

when the test sentences are being read. When you are certain a statement is
accurate, mark the answer immediately, and move on to preview the next picture.
If you do so, you have more time to preview the next photo. You do not need to
wait to be told to look at the next photo.

5. Guess: If you really do not know the answer after you have listened to all the
possible choices, guess before moving on to the next question. Do not leave
any blanks.

Skill Building
1. LISTENING FOR CONTENT: Questions in this part of the test often begin
with who, whom, whose, which, what, when, where, why and how. One
effective way to build listening skills for the test is by listening to English news
broadcasts on TV and the radio. Pay attention to words that are stressed. Pick
out the subject and verb of each sentence.

2. DESCRIBING PICTURES: You must be able to understand and express in

English the actions taking place in the photos, as well as the details of each
object in the photo. Start by practicing to identify the main idea of the picture.
Then proceed to identify the details.

CD 1 Track 2

Drill 1: Play the appropriate track on the CD. Read the questions for each
photo and listen to the sample answers on the CD, paying extra attention
to the intonation, as well as the key verbs and nouns in the answers.
