INTRODUCTION
Congratulations on your new purchase. The footscan® gait, footscan® footwear adviser and
footscan® balance systems are developed to perform state-of-the-art pressure measurements, for
clinical or scientific use.
User friendly software creates the opportunity to have accurate and reliable pressure and timing data
in no time. Barefoot and shod measurements in a static and dynamic way can be performed with the
footscan® gait software.

This guide will assist you with the installation of the footscan® advanced & hi-end balance software,
the footscan® Calibration File and the footscan® hardware. Please follow the instructions step by
step.

The footscan® Calibration File is unique and matched to the footscan® plate serial number. Before
installing, verify if the footscan® plate serial number matches the serial number written on the
footscan® Calibration File Installer CD. Note that the footscan® Calibration File supplied for 2nd
generation systems is not compatible with legacy SCSI interface boxes.
nd
If the footscan® 2 balance software is installed on footscan® advanced & hi-end systems delivered
before June 2007 or the Pressure Sensitive Layer (PSL) has been replaced before June 2007, the
footscan® Calibration File is not applicable and the default calibration file will be used.

If the footscan® Calibration File is already installed on your system (during the installation of
the footscan® advanced & hi-end gait and footwear adviser software), the footscan®
Calibration File installation can be skipped. It is recommended to disconnect the footscan®
system during the installation of the footscan® USB2 balance software.

Enjoy your footscan® balance system.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
®
The footscan advanced & hi-end hardware and software is designed for use on personal computers
running Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition or Professional, 32 bit with Service Pack 2), Microsoft
Windows Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate, 32 bit) or Microsoft Windows 7
(Home premium, Professional, Ultimate, 32 bit).
Minimum system requirements:
• Memory: 512 MB of RAM memory (2 GB for Windows Vista and Windows 7).
• Ports: 1 available USB 2.0 port, fully compliant with the USB 2.0 specifications.
• Screen: a minimum display screen resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels, 16 bit color quality.
• Hard drive storage: 100MB of space for the footscan® software and additional space for the
measurements database. Approximate 0.5MB of additional space is required per
measurement. For example a database of 250 patients with 3 measurements per patient
requires 375MB additional hard drive space. NTFS file system.

PN 80000054 RS-PRD-00122-05 Page 6

INTENDED USE

• The footscan® state-of-the-art pressure measurement system is intended for the

measurement of static and dynamic pressures and the analysis of balance and gait patterns
of human beings.
• Operation, interpretation of the measurements and prescription of treatment or orthotic
corrections should be done by trained professionals.
• As part of our continuous quality improvement process, RSscan International invites you to
provide feedback on our footscan® systems, contact information is located on page 5.

GENERAL SAFETY INFORMATION

• All users should read the user guides before using the footscan® system, the user guides
should be available to users at all times.
• Prior to the measurement session, the patient should be instructed on how to walk or run over
the footscan® plate.
• Should the patient incur injury due to use or malfunction of the footscan® system, providing
all precautions are taken, the footscan® system is well maintained and used as intended,
report such event to the manufacturer RSscan International.

INSTALLATION AND OPERATIONAL SAFETY

• All equipment connected directly or indirectly to the footscan® system (PC and peripherals,
force plate, trigger device, synchronized camera, …) has to be configured in accordance with
the EN 60601-1 standard. Consult a qualified technician when in doubt.
• Ensure a safe distance of 1.5m between the patient and any of the above mentioned
equipment (except equipment required for the measurement such as a force plate) or other
equipment not compliant with the EN 60601-1 standard.
• Use only the supplied EN 60601-1 approved external power supply with the footscan® 2nd
generation interface box. Using other power supplies may violate the safety standard of the
product and increase the risk for the patient.
nd
• Use an approved, grounded mains cable with the power supply of the footscan® 2
generation interface box.
• Power down the entire setup when connecting or disconnecting equipment.
• Do not place the footscan® system (plate, cable …) adjacent to equipment or power lines
which generate strong electromagnetic or electrostatic fields, relocate if necessary.
• Do not operate or store the footscan® system outside the specified environmental
temperature and humidity range, do not expose the footscan® system to direct sunlight, do
not expose the footscan® system to moisture.
• Install the footscan® plate on a solid, non-skid surface, ensure the plate is fully supported
and the entire patient runway is non-skid.
• Install the footscan® plate in a runway which is long enough to allow the patient to walk or
run in a natural gait pattern.
• To eliminate the height difference between the floor and the footscan® plate, either recess
the footscan® plate in the floor or use a raised runway (available from RSscan International
or its local distributors).

PN 80000054 RS-PRD-00122-05 Page 7

• It is recommended to use a top cover for the entire runway to provide more comfort for the
patient and avoid targeting (available from RSscan International or its local distributors).
• Avoid direct contact between the measurement surface of the footscan® plate and damaged
skin, use appropriate isolation methods.
• Protect the measurement surface from high impact or sharp objects. Dents or damage to the
measurement surface can influence the measurement and can permanently damage the
Pressure Sensitive Layer and electronic components. Use a protective cover when
performing such measurements, for example a layer of 3-5mm EVA material (Ethylene Vinyl
Acetate sheets).
• Protect the footscan® plate cable and connectors from accidental damage. Ensure nobody
can trip over the cable. Use a cable conduit or other means to cover and protect the cable.
• Do not bend any of the footscan® cables in a sharp angle.
• Do not lift the footscan® plate by its cable, never pull the cable.
• Power down the footscan® system when not in use.
• When not in use, store your footscan® plate flat (measurement surface up) or in its
packaging or flight case. Do not store the footscan® plate vertically without adequate support
(cable always pointing upwards), do not put any weight on the measurement surface.
• Do not use unsuitable or unapproved third party accessories or non-original spare parts, this
can cause malfunctions or incorrect measurements and void warranty.

SAFETY INSPECTIONS

• Prior to each measurement session, visually inspect the measurement surface of the
footscan® plate, do not use the footscan® plate if the protective sticker or rubber is loose or
damaged to such an extent that the patient could trip or get injured. Replacement stickers and
rubbers can be ordered from RSscan International or its local distributors.
• Prior to each measurement session, visually inspect the cables and patient runway, ensuring
maximum safety for the patient while being measured.
• On a weekly basis, inspect all cables and connections. All cables except the plate cable can
be replaced by the user, replacement cables are available from RSscan International or its
local distributors.
• On a yearly basis, verify the electrical safety of the external power supply for the footscan®
nd
2 generation interface box and all equipment connected directly or indirectly to the
footscan® system.

MAINTENANCE OF THE MEASUREMENT SURFACE

• To ensure patient safety, clean and, if applicable, disinfect the measurement surface of the
footscan® plate between subsequent patients.
• The measurements surface can be cleaned and disinfected with a suitable disinfectant, for
example Huwa-san TR-5 (5% H2O2).
• Do not pour or spray the cleaning or disinfectant product directly on the footscan® plate, use
a damp cloth to remove contamination.
• Make sure the measurement surface of the footscan® plate is completely dry before use.
• Do not use aggressive cleaning or disinfectant products that are harmful to PVC,
polycarbonate plastic or rubber.
• Do not use solvent based, flammable or abrasive cleaning or disinfectant products.
• Do not submerge any part of the footscan® system into water or other liquids.

PN 80000054 RS-PRD-00122-05 Page 8

• Do not sterilize the footscan® plate.
