The Hierarchy of Therapeutics
There many forms of medicinal healing. It is important to understand some of them.
We are most familiar with traditional Prescription and Over-The-Counter medicines. These kinds of
medicines force the body into some kind of chemical or cellular change to achieve a certain outcome. They
are reasonably predictable and may have some side effects. The higher the dose, the stronger the effect until
a toxicity level is reached. For example, Sudafed is a common decongestant, but it can raise blood pressure
and damage the heart.
Herbal medicine is like prescription medicine except the source of the medicine is all from natural sources
and they are not synthetically manufactured. Herbal medicines are like concentrated food. The function
of Herbal medicine is to “build” in the case of deficiencies and “cleanse” in the case of excesses. Thereby,
Herbal medicines bring the natural body systems back to normal health. There can still be side effects, but
toxicity rarely occurs. For example, Herbal Hydrangea can dissolve bone spurs and calcium-containing kidney
and gall stones. Too much of it is not harmful, but an overdose of Hawthorne Berry can harm the heart.
Supplements are compounds of natural or synthetic origin that are used to replace or replenish substances
that the body can no longer produce or can only manufacture in limited quantity. They are also used in cases
where the body cannot manufacture an essential substance that we need. Supplements are usually intended
to “build” in cases of deficiency. They can have side effects and can occasionally be toxic. For example,
Vitamin D3 may be used replace missing D3 in sunless Michigan during the winter. Too much Niacin can raise
blood pressure and cause the skin to flush red.
Next are tinctures. These are herbal extractions of the medicinal part of plants into
alcohol. They are usually given as a few drops in water. Tinctures may be stronger or
weaker than herbs because they are concentrated forms of the medicinal part of the
plant. Tinctures force some chemical or cellular change in the body. When given with
care and proper dosing, side effects and toxicities are rare. For example, Alfalfa Tincture
may be used to stimulate appetite in a very ill patient who will not eat. Taking too much
would be like eating the alfalfa plant. However, Arnica tincture is highly poisonous when
taken internally, whereas topical use is highly beneficial for sprains, strains, and bruises.
This next concept is very important to understand. When tinctures are used another
phenomenon begins to emerge – Energy Medicine. (to be continued next week)
