Saving Files in Aspen

To save a file in Aspen, choose Save As from the pull-down File menu. This will
allow you to enter a file name.

This screen appears next. Your


application can be saved either
as a document or a backup file.
Click on the down arrow and
select the appropriate option.
Saving as a backup file requires
10 times less space but any
objects created in PFD mode will
not be saved.

Enter the name of your


application in the File Name box
and click on the “Save’ button.
Be sure to note which directory
you saved your file in.
Printing files in Aspen

To print a flowsheet
diagram in Aspen Plus
click on the file menu
and and choose the
Print option. Only the
diagram of mixer and
the streams will be
printed.

To print the results of the


simulation, click on the View
menu and select the Report
option.

Aspen Plus will actually export


the results of the simulation to
the program called Notepad.
Notepad is just a program that
displays text. From Notepad,
you can print the data or save
the file and open it in Excel.
Details for doing this follow.
This window will appear next
indicating which data you wish to
have printed.

Click on the “down arrow” in the


Display report for: box. Select the
Streams option from the list. Then,
make sure that ALL is diplayed in
the Selection box.

Click on “OK.”

Aspen Plus exports the


results of the simulation to
the program called Notepad.

Now, to print your results,


click on the File menu of
Notepad and select Print
from the options.
To open your results in
Excel, first save this file.
The save-as option is under
the File menu. (Note the
directory and filename used
when saving.) Notepad
will save the file with a .txt
extension.

Open the Excel program


located within the start menu
options. In Excel, click on
the open option under the
File menu. Notepad saved
your file with a .txt
extension, therefore, first
select the text files option in
the Files of type box. Now,
select your results file.
This window now appears
indicating the type of
format that Excel uses to
display your results.

Click on Finish and Excel


will automatically enter all
of your results into the
appropriate columns and
rows.

Printing Input Files in Aspen

The procedure for printing


input files is similar to the
printing of simulation
results. Click on the Input
Summary option in the
View menu. Aspen Plus
exports the input data to
Notepad. See the above
instructions for printing or
exporting this information
from Notepad.
Block ID’s

Aspen automatically names all blocks and streams created on a flowsheet. You may wish to
name each block yourself to make your flowsheet easier to read. To change the settings of your
Aspen account to allow you to name all new blocks, choose Options under the Tools menu.

On this screen, click on the


Flowsheet tab. Unselect
Automatically assign block
name and Automatically
assign stream name by clicking
on the boxes to remove the
check marks.

Click OK to continue.
Exchanging Icons

There are many different options


available to edit an object. For
example, to exchange the icon of
an object, first make sure the arrow
at the bottom left corner of the
screen is selected. Then, for this
example, left click on the mixer.
(4 red dots appear in the corners
when it is properly selected.)
Then right click on the object and
a list of options appear. Click on
the Exchange Icon option. The
icon will then change. If you
prefer a different icon, right click
on the object and click the
Exchange Icon option again.

Viewing Forms

To view forms that you have


input, select the Setup option
under the Data menu. The
data browser window will
appear.
You can scroll through your input forms using the backward and forward double arrows.

Help Button

The Help menu is found in


the upper right-hand corner
of most screens and is often
useful when you need more
information.

Click on the Help Topics


option under the Help menu.
Then, click on the Index tab at
the top of the window. The
screen seen here will appear.
Type the general subject of
your search in the first box.

You can also scroll a list of


subjects using the up and down
arrows.

Also, you can search for


specific words concerning
the Aspen Plus simulator.
To do this, click on the Find
tab at the top of window.
Enter in the word or words
you wish to search for in the
first box.

Then, you can narrow down


your search using box
number 2 or choose a
specific topic using box
number 3.
For example, you wish to know
more about the print options in
Aspen Plus.

First, enter the word “printing”


in box number 1.

Note how boxes 2 and 3 fill in


with words and topics,
respectively.

Notice that “Printing” was


selected in box number 2 and
“…Printing a Flowsheet” was
selected in box number 3.

Click on the Display button.

A screen similar to the one


seen here will appear with
information about your topic.

Click on the green highlighted


text to display more
information about your
subject.

To Close this screen, click on


the X box at the top right hand
corner of the window.
