To perform the calculation --- – ------ , follow these steps.
6 12
b
5 a ---c 6 − 1 a b---c 1 2 and
then press EXE . This would appear on the screen
as shown at right.

The calculations involving mixed numbers such as

3 1 1 3
2 --- + 1 --- and 3 --- – 1 --- can be viewed in the screen
4 2 5 4
shown at right. Note that the answers are shown as
mixed numbers.

Estimation can be used to find approximate answers to addition and subtraction of

mixed numbers. This allows you to easily check whether your answer to a calculation
looks reasonable.

Graphics Calculator tip! Division with

negative numbers
You can check your answers with a graphics
calculator. Remember that negative numbers
are entered using the (−) key. The ÷ key
or fraction key ab/c is used for operations
on integers expressed as 10 ÷ −2 as well as

Graphics Calculator tip! Simplifying ratios

Since simplifying ratios is similar to the process of
simplifying fractions, we can use the fraction key to
simplify the ratio. A ratio such as 16 : 24 can be
entered as 16 ab/c 24. Press EXE to simplify
the ratio.
When a ratio has the larger number first, using
this method produces the fraction as a mixed number. As the ratio has only two
numbers, we want the fraction turned into an improper fraction and so we press SHIFT
[d/c].
The calculations for worked examples 3 and 4 are shown above.

Graphics Calculator tip! Calculations involving π

To enter the value of π, find the button marked EXP .
First press SHIFT and then EXP ; that is SHIFT [π].
This gives you an approximation of pi (correct to usually
8 or 9 decimal places).
To find the circumference of a circle with radius 4 cm
and evaluate 2 × π × 4, press 2 × SHIFT [π] × 4 and then EXE .
You should obtain the result as shown in the screen above.
Always round your answer to a sensible number of decimal places.
The circumference of a circle with a radius of 4 cm is approximately 25.13 cm.

Graphics Calculator tip! Plotting points

We can check whether a set of coordinate points form a linear pattern by using the
STAT function on the Casio graphics calculator.
1. From the main MENU select STAT.

2. Delete all the contents from List 1 and List 2.

3. Enter the x-values in List 1 and the y-values in List 2.

4. Press F1 (GRPH) (If this is not visible you may

need to first press F6 to display this option).

5. Press F6 (SET), then highlight Graph Type and

press F1 (Scat). Again if this is not visible you
may have to press F6 up to three times until
this option is displayed. Also check that Xlist is set
to List 1 and YList is set to List 2.

6. Press EXIT then F1 (GPH1) to display the

points. If your display does not appear the same as
that on the right you may need to adjust your
V-Window settings by pressing SHIFT F3 .

7. By pressing SHIFT F1 you can trace the points that

you have plotted.

Graphics Calculator tip! Finding the median (or the mean)

We will look at using the graphics calculator to find the mean of a list of scores and the
mean of a data set presented in a frequency distribution table.
For scores presented in a list
Find the mean of the scores 8, 9, 4, 5, 7, 5, 8, 5.
1. From the MAIN MENU select the STAT option.
2. Enter the scores into List 1.
3. Press F2 (CALC) then F6 (SET). Enter the following
settings by:
• highlighting 1Var Xlist and pressing F1 (List 1)
• highlighting 1Var Freq and pressing F1 (1).
It does not matter what the settings are for 2Var settings.
Press EXE to return to the list screen.
4. Press F1 (1Var) to display the summary statistics.
The first figure displayed is the mean.

For scores presented in a frequency distribution table

Find the mean of the scores presented in the frequency distribution table below.

Score Frequency
15 5
16 8
17 19
18 12

1. From the MAIN MENU select the STAT option.
2. Enter the scores in List 1 and the frequencies in List 2.
3. Press F2 (CALC) then F6 (SET). Enter the following
settings by:
• highlighting 1Var Xlist and pressing F1 (List 1)
• highlighting 1Var Freq and pressing F3 (List 2).
It does not matter what the settings are for 2Var settings.
Press EXE to return to the list screen.

4. Press F1 (1Var) to display the summary statistics.

The first figure shown is the mean.
GC Tips Page 12 Tuesday, November 29, 2005 7:31 AM

Data are entered into the STAT function as shown in the previous section on finding the
mean. When the summary statistics are displayed we can scroll down to see the median
and the mode displayed.

Note that when we have more than one mode, the value of the highest mode is dis-
played. If there is no mode, the highest score in the data set is displayed as the mode.
We therefore need to check answers for the mode manually. The range can be
calculated by viewing the values for minX (the lowest value) and maxX (the highest
value).
