Finding Your Innate Health – Getting Healthy from the Inside-Out

Stress and other unhealthy symptoms can easily come upon us in uncertain times like these.
Combined with what is (or often seems to be) a much faster pace of life, it’s no wonder that most
of us from time to time can lose perspective on our jobs, our careers, our relationships – even our
lives in general. Technological advances certainly contribute to this acceleration, and thus are
viewed by many as “part of the problem”. Others, especially the people and organizations who
are part of this high-tech revolution, see them more as “part of the solution”. Yet today many in
high-tech find themselves impacted (perhaps even moreso than others) by the recently uncertain,
yet still increasingly fast-paced, dynamic industry they have been part of creating!

Clearly there is truth in each of these perspectives. The creative ability of us as humans is
astounding, as evidenced by the many advances of the 20th Century. And while we may differ in
our perspectives on the value/contribution of some of these advances, few will dispute the
creative genius that it represents.

Fewer still (if any) can escape the impact of these dramatic changes in our world. Like it or not,
technology is part of the way we live, and with it comes the opportunity to either adapt or become
overwhelmed. The good news is that the same creative energy that is responsible for these
developments exists within each of us. It is an innate part of us as humans, and can support us
in not only handling the stress we encounter, but in actually adapting ourselves to the dynamic
world in which we live. The history of the human race is our best evidence of this, and it is with
this natural human ability that we create our own lives just the way we choose to… we just need
to realize that it is there, and learn how to access it as a normal course of living.

One of the simplest and yet most powerful ways of doing this that I have found is based on an
understanding developed by Sydney Banks called Psychology of Mind/Health Realization (often
abbreviated as POM/HR). The understanding is built upon three principles -- Mind, Thought and
Consciousness. The idea is that we create our reality through our thoughts, and because as
human beings we can be aware of this through our consciousness, we can choose to change or
let go of a thought... just as I get to choose the next word I... write... type... put... in this sentence.

In an increasingly complex and dynamic world, any of us can lose track of this simple
insight. This is partly because our brain works so fast that it can sometimes seem to be creating
our thoughts or words (or feelings) on its own. When I hear someone say something like, "My
head is spinning", or "Thoughts just keep racing through my head", or "Stop the world, I want to
get off", it often means they have lost touch with this insight. Sometimes just reminding them that
they can "let go" of the thoughts that are not serving them well at the time can make a big
difference.

The understanding goes on to tell us that our feelings are really a natural feedback mechanism
(like a barometer) of the appropriateness or healthiness of our thinking. By being more mindful of
our thoughts and feelings, we can begin to let go of what it refers to as our “personal thinking” –
those sometimes persistent (and often non-productive) thought patterns. We all have them –
things like our regrets of the past or our fears of the future – and we can become so used to
“hearing” them that we forget we created them. By becoming aware of this, and choosing to
reduce the level and intensity of these types of thoughts, we naturally become more quiet and
more present.

It is from that quiet place that the understanding says our Mind can really support us. In
POM/HR, our "Mind" goes far beyond the function of our brain and refers to our connection to a
universal life force or creative energy. When we can become very quiet, and have let go of our
"personal thinking", the understanding says that we are open to receiving more creative energy
and become capable of "flow thinking". Most of us have experienced this at some level sometime
in our lives. Athletes often report this feeling when achieving peak levels of performance with
seemingly little effort. Artists of all types do the same in a variety of media and settings. I know
some coaches and managers (myself included) who sometimes experience a different physical
sensation when communicating more deeply with someone. It feels as if they are actually
speaking and hearing from the center of their bodies rather than through their actual physical
senses.

With some practice, this "deep listening" state becomes more natural, and the feeling is
remarkable. That feeling of well-being is what the understanding refers to as Innate Health, and it
is within each of us as long as we are alive... hence the notion of Health Realization, referring to
our natural ability to choose to tap into (or "realize") our own innate health whenever we choose
to, by being mindful of and using the three principles of Mind, Thought and Consciousness.

This Innate Health is our guide to managing our lives by becoming more aware of our thoughts
and quieting on personal thinking. Moreover, as we realize this natural, more peaceful state, our
natural creativity will begin to flow… perhaps only a trickle at first, but with experience, eventually
a stream of new thoughts. In this healthy state of mind, we are even more aware that we can
choose or let go of our thoughts. And as we choose our new thoughts, we gather new insights,
develop new perspectives on ourselves, our lives and our changing world. In doing so, we begin
to create a new, healthier reality for ourselves and those around us.
