RULES

ORGANIZATION
Within the framework of the 21th Bird and Nature Festival, that will be held from
April 16 to 25, 2011, an international wildbird photo competition is organized.
This competition is open to everybody, amateur and professional photographers,
whatever his/her age or nationality. The organizers of the Festival and the jury
members are not allowed to participate

REGISTRATION

5 categories are defined:

A : Bird in flight : Images that reflect the beauty of flight, the power and the
grace of bird in mid-air, soaring, taking off or landing.

B : Bird in landscape : Pleasing shots of birds within the beauty of environ-
ment. The landscape is as important a part of the picture as the bird itself.

C : Bird behaviour : Images must capture a memorable, unusual or interes-


ting behaviour. Judges will look for images with an aesthetic appeal, a unique
interest value and dramatic action.

D : Bird and color : The photo has to put forward the bird by using games of
colors (monochromaticity..) – the judges will be looking for artistic vision and
true originality. Let your imagination run wild.
Colors must be natural and not obtained by means of a photo-editing software.

E: Bird portrait: Portraits should capture the unique character or spirit of the
bird, give an emotion and convey a sense of intimacy and immediacy.

A maximum of 5 photographs can be entered by each entrant (either in the


same or several categories). Only images of wild birds are eligible for entry (no
captive birds). Whatever number of photographs entered in one category, only
the best classified of them can be awarded. A photograph can compete only in
one category.
Previous winning photographs will not be accepted as entries for the 2011
competition.

PHOTOGRAPHS’ ADMISSION CONDITIONS:


Digital or argentic photographs, without margins or frames, format 20 x 30
cm required (A4 permitted).

The pictures should be true to the original view. Reframing is only accepted within
a limit of 20 % of the photo surface. Touch up is allowed only to erase the dust or
improve the general aspect of the picture as a whole (white balance, color level,
brightness and contrast...). Saturation increase must remain moderate.

Entries must be sent before November 15th, 2010 (postmark prevailing) at this

JURY
THE PRESELECTION
The preselection will be made by the Festival team accompanied by photogra-
phs, ornithologists and naturalists on November 2010. The preselected pictures
will be shown to the final jury. The list of these photos will be published on the
Festival’s website.
The jury has a right to change the category of a photograph if it’s in the
author’s interest.

THE FINAL JURY


The final Jury is made of such professionals as ornithological scientists, wildlife
photographers, naturalists, Festival partners will meet on January 14th, 2011.
They award the prizes mentioned below and establish a classification of fifty
most beautiful images to subject them to the Internet Prize.
The jury have the right to modify the list or to cancel a prize according to the
quality of the pictures in competition. The Jury decisions are final

PRIZES AND AWARD CEREMONY


The results will be announced during the closing ceremony on April,23rd 2011 in
Abbeville, transmitted by mail to the winners and published in the press and on
the Festival’s website. The prizewinners’ list will be sent to each entrant with the
return of their photographs.

PRIZES

A Grand Prix awarded with a sum of 1 500 €


A First prize will be awarded in each category. (Birds in flight, Birds in the Land-
cape, Bird behaviour, Bird and Color and Bird portrait)
A Public Prize: awarded to the picture which has totalized the more votes from
the visitors of the exhibition.
An Internet Prize: 50 pictures will be published on the Festival’s website on
February, 2011, and submitted to the votes of users. The prize will be awarded to
the picture which has totalized the more votes from the users.
The payment of the money prizes will be made, at the latest at the end of 2011.

THE WINNERS
In the case of an argentic picture, the author of an awarded photograph commits
himself on the Festival’s request, to send a high-resolution digital version of his/
her original in a sufficient definition and with a resolution of 300 dpi.
If the original picture is not true to the photo selected, the prize will be automa-
tically cancelled.
Invitation: Each winner will be invited to the Award Ceremony on April 23rd 2011. The Festival will offer for
two persons: one night in a hotel room/ a first class return train tickets: Paris- Abbeville – Paris or the equi-
valent in cash, a meal with the other nominated entrants, directors, producers and photographers.
If you tell us your arrival time at the Abbeville railway station we will be happy to pick you up. On Saturday
23rd, we will offer you a tour at the Ornithological Park of Marquenterre or of the area. A hostess will wel-
come you at the Festival office and will give you the program of the Festival and other materials.

EXHIBITIONS
The photographs preselected in November, will be exhibited in Le Crotoy from April 16 to 25, 2011, during
the 21th Bird and Nature Festival. Also, following information are required on the entry form: title of the
photo, English and Latin name of the species, shooting date and place, hardware details.

The awarded photographs and some fifty others will constitute an itinerant non-profit exhibition to promote
the Festival. So, it is possible that a photographer, who has sent several pictures, receive back just one or
two of them.

COMMUNICATION
The author of a selected photography authorizes the Festival to:
- reproduce his work to promote the Festival and those to come,
- edit and put on sale on the sites of exhibitions a portfolio and postcards stemming from the
competition.
No compensation can be claimed for this use.
The organizers make a commitment to quote the name of the author for any publication and not to make
any other use of the work without preliminary agreement of the author
A photo chosen among the entrants may eventually be elected as a next Festival poster. The photographer
will receive after agreement 500 €, on top of any other money prize already won.

LIABILITY
The organizers will take great care of your prints but the Association declines however any liability in case of
damage or loss during the postal routing or during the exposure of the works.
The organizers couldn’t be held responsible if this competition had to be modified, postponed or cancelled.

In case of any dispute concerning the rules only the French language rules will be deemed authentic. The
French language rules can be seen at the office of Patrick CARTON, the Festival’s lawyer in Abbeville
(Somme) and have been read over by Maître Meyrand, lawyer in Paris, specialized in audio-visual rights.
