1 The legend of King Arthur and his knights has been popular for more than a
2 thousand years. The knights in England wanted a new king. They found a huge stone
3 with a sword through it. There was golden writing on the sword which said that the man
4 who was able to pull it out of the stone would be the next king. All the knights tried to
5 pull the sword from the stone but no one could do it. Arthur was a young boy at the
6 time, but he managed to accomplish the feat and so became king. He lived in the
7 castle of Camelot with Queen Guinevere. In the castle there was a round table, made by
8 Merlin, the magician. All the knights sat around it. It was round because the king
9 wanted to show that they were all on the same level. The most famous knights were Sir
10 Lancelot, Sir Gawain and Sir Galahad. However, there is always a rotten apple. Arthur
11 was killed by his nephew, Sir Mordred. Before he died, he gave his magic sword,
12 Excalibur, to his true friend, Sir Bedivere, and told him to throw it into a lake. When he
13 did this, a woman’s hand came out of the water and caught the sword. Three beautiful
14 queens took Arthur’s body in a boat to the island of Avalon. The legend says that one
15 day Arthur will return to save his country when Britain needs him.

1 I had the contracts for the rented Spanish villa in my handbag. The reserved rental cars
2 were waiting to take all eight members of our family to the small town of Palafrugell,
3 where we would be met by a staff that included a gardener, a housekeeper, and a cook.
4 Every detail was in place for the perfect holiday on the wild coast of Spain. At the villa
5 we had rented, the housekeeper smiled broadly before she extended her hand in
6 welcome. “Buenos días, señora.” “Hi,” I said warmly in return, shaking her hand. She
7 continued in very rapid Spanish, introducing the rest of the staff. My husband
8 whispered: “They don’t speak English.” “Of course they speak English,” I said. At this
9 point I used my usual speaking voice when conversing with foreigners. I placed myself
10 squarely in front of their faces, raised my voice and shouted slowly, “DO -YOU -
11 SPEAK -ENGLISH?” “They’re not hard of hearing,” said my husband. By this time,
12 the staff were beginning to talk among themselves. I had been in such a hurry to book
13 this holiday that I had overlooked something important. In most large cities, English is
14 spoken… somewhere. But here in this small community, it was non-existent. “What
15 about those nine credit hours of Spanish you took in college?,” my husband asked. “The
16 only thing I remember is the Lord’s Prayer,” I told my husband.

1 Sniffer dogs are used by police and customs officers all over the world to detect drugs
2 and explosives. Dogs have a far better sense of smell than people because the smell
3 receptors at the top of a dog’s nose are one hundred times longer than in humans.
4 Training for a sniffer dog lasts twelve weeks. They are trained in two stages. First, the
5 trainer teaches the dog to recognize a particular drug or explosive. He hides a sample of
6 the drug or explosive inside a rolled-up newspaper or a rag, which is called a training
7 aid. He places it where the dog can see it and tells the dog to bring the aid back. When it
8 does so, he gives the dog a reward, usually a friendly fight with the trainer or a bone.
9 The dog soon learns to recognise the substance by its smell. The type of training aid is
10 changed regularly but the smell always remains the same. In the second stage, the aid is
11 hidden where the dog cannot see it. Smells such as perfumes, which some smugglers
12 use to hide the smell of the drugs, are also used so that the dog becomes familiar with
13 them. Sniffer dogs are trained to detect twelve different types of explosives and four
14 different types of drugs.

1 I was just going home after school, when I saw some of my classmates smoking. Before
2 I could open my mouth, they cornered me, puffing smoke in my face and chanting: “It
3 doesn’t only damage your own health, but the health of those around you.” “It kills
4 50,000 people every year.” “Each cigarette knocks five minutes off your life.” I couldn’t
5 see, if they knew all this, why they still smoked, but they were perfectly willing to talk
6 about it. Ann said that she started when she was thirteen. Her older sister was going out
7 with a heavy smoker. One night her boy-friend visited their house when their parents
8 were out and he and her sister began to smoke. Her sister said jokingly, ”Would you
9 like a cigarette?” and Ann said OK because she didn’t want to look stupid in front of
10 them. Dave started when he was fourteen because he thought it made him look big and
11 tough. He didn’t like it much at first and only smoked at parties and in discos. They
12 insisted on me having one. I took two or three really deep breaths. I started coughing,
13 my eyes watered and I nearly fainted. On the way home I stopped to buy some chewing
14 gum to cover up the smell. I got home, cleaned my teeth and held my breath when Mum
15 kissed me goodnight.
