in the year. April is Public
Schools month for our
fraternity, so please do your
best in these difficult times to
donate for the good of our
students. We have a
committee established to
notify a school of our
intended donations, so when
you receive the forthcoming
letter from the lodge, do your
best. It's my intent to donate
$50.00 to honor some of our
students.
More degrees are coming, a
1st degree before the middle
of the month, and probably a
3rd before the end of the
month. Check with the lodge,
on Tuesday nights, so you
know when these degrees
occur. As usual the second

April is upon us, and around the
Fraternity the buzz of activity can
be heard and seen. This month has
been designated as Public Schools
Month and as such we will be
recognizing local area students for
their achievements during this past
year. This year I would like to see
every member of the lodge
attending to show their support for
public schools.
A Masonic Information Night is in
the planning for next month and
the committee could still use more
Masons to lend a hand. Masons
willing to work and desiring to see
the event succeed are needed. Prior
experience in putting together a
community event is not a
requirement, although it always
helps. The Afternoon event is
intended to showcase not only our
lodge, but all aspects of our Masonic
Organization. The path doesn’t end
at completing 3 degrees, it begins
there.
Within the Lodge, Thursdays
continue to be informative and
educational events for all Masons.

as always, the Lodge is in need of
volunteers to serve on the committees
of the Lodge. Some of these
Committees are obligatory and are
required to be established. In the end,
however, the Lodge has to have
effective committees or important work
doesn’t get done. In particular, the
Lodge needs a Membership Retention
Committee, Audit Committee,
Constitution Observance, Public
Schools Observance, and Layman’s
Night just to name a few. The last

Traditionally, throughout its long history,
Freemasonry has taken a leading role in the
promotion of learning and education. From its
early beginnings, in the 18th century in England that the object of a free public schools system is

Horace Mann, the father of our present system
of public schools and purported Mason, wrote
“to give every child a free, straight, solid
pathway by which he can walk directly up from
the ignorance of an infant to a knowledge of the
primary duties of a man.” The same can, of
course, be said about the progress of a
candidate through the three Masonic Degrees,
from Apprentice, to Fellowcraft, to Master
Mason. Freemasonry and the public schools
share several important values.
Mason alike, understood that eternal vigilance is
the price of freedom. And vigilance requires an

Northwest Ordinance of 1787 was one of the

States. Under its regulations, Congress set
aside a section in each township in the old

Since that time, the individual States and now
the Federal Government have supported and
developed our system of free public education.
The California State public school system was
started in the 1850’s, and the first State
Superintendent of Public Instruction was John
Swett, a transplanted Mason who had come
west in the years following the Gold Rush. The
public schools have always been a special
concern of California Masons. Charles Albert
Adams, Grand Master in 1920, wrote that as
Masons “we subscribe to the belief that an
enlightened citizenship is the first great care of
a progressive State.” He believed that the
future of our free republic depended on the
quality of our public schools.
Freemasonry and education remain closely
related in the world at large as well. The
modern world is confronted with poverty and its
effects; religious and political fundamentalism;
and overpopulation. The fight against bigotry
and fanaticism must be fought in the minds of
men. Education is the key to the solution of the
world’s problems in these present
circumstances. An educated man learns to
appreciate the wide range of opinions on any
subject. Freemasonry, in addition, allows men
of many different professions and backgrounds
to meet together in a spirit of cooperation and
understanding.
All of Freemasonry’s principles and ideals are
worthless, unless they are inculcated in the
minds of each Mason by education within our
Lodges. Our fundamental principles are called
“landmarks” because they are signposts. They
are not constraints. Freemasonry is not
restricted to what goes on in the Lodge room.
It has to become a way of life in order for the
new Mason to become a true and full-fledged
Mason. The threefold orientation of Masonic
work for the candidate is toward himself,
toward his Brethren, and toward the world at
large.

Famous Mason: Gerald R. Ford, President, Freemason
Gerald Rudolph Ford, Jr. (born
Leslie Lynch King, Jr.; July 14,
1913 – December 26, 2006) was
the 38th President of the United
States, serving from 1974 to
1977, and the 40th Vice
President of the United States
serving from 1973 to 1974. As
the first person appointed to the
vice-presidency under the terms
of the 25th Amendment (after
the resignation of Spiro Agnew),
when he became President upon
Richard Nixon's resignation on
August 9, 1974, he became the
only President of the United
States who was never elected
President or Vice-President.
Before ascending to the vice-
presidency, Ford served nearly
25 years as Representative from
Michigan's 5th congressional
district, eight of them as the
Republican Minority Leader.
As President, Ford signed the
Helsinki Accords, marking a
move toward détente in the
Cold War. With the conquest of
South Vietnam by North
Vietnam nine months into his
presidency, U.S. involvement in
Vietnam essentially ended.
Domestically, Ford presided over
what was then the worst
economy since the Great
Depression, with growing
inflation and a recession during
his tenure. One of his more
controversial acts was to grant a
presidential pardon to President
Richard Nixon for his role in the
Watergate scandal. During
Ford’s incumbency, foreign
policy was characterized in
procedural terms by the
increased role Congress began
to play, and by the
corresponding curb on the
powers of the President. In
1976, Ford narrowly defeated
Ronald Reagan for the
Republican nomination, but
ultimately lost the presidential
election to Democrat Jimmy
Carter.
Following his years as president,
Ford remained active in the
Republican Party. After
experiencing health problems
and being admitted to the
hospital four times in 2006, Ford
died in his home on December
26, 2006. He lived longer than
any other U.S. president, dying
at the age of 93 years and 165
days.
