This unit deals with selected issues in drug use, misuse and abuse. An introductory section discusses
Handbook mechanisms of drug action in the body and their likely effects. Some topical areas include recreational
Summary drugs, drugs in sport, vitamins and herbal supplements, oral contraceptives, antidepressants and weight
management therapeutic agents.

On successful completion of this unit, students should:


1. describe the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
2. describe strategies for the responsible use of prescribed therapeutic agents including mood
altering substances
3. describe safe practices in the administration of a range of therapeutic substances
