GENERATOR CAPABILITY CURVE

The capability curve of synchronous generator defines the bounds within which it can operate safely.
Various bounds imposed on the machine are ------
1 MVA loading can not exceed the Generator rating. This limit is imposed by stator heating.
2 MW loading can not exceed the Turbine rating which is given by MVA (rating) x P.F (rating).
3 Generator must operate a safe margin away from steady state limit (δ = 900 ). This is the
Maximum allowable value of δ.
4 The maximum field current cannot exceed a specified value imposed by the
rotor heating.

The permissible reactive loading of 210 MW generator should be within -80 MVar
to 170 MVar.
Limiters
1. Rotor current limiter
2. Stator current limiter
3. Load angle limiter

Rotor current limiter

Rotor current limiter avoids thermal overloading of the rotor winding &
is provided to protect the rotor against excessively long duration overload. It
depends on the type of insulation class used for the rotor.

Stator current limiter

Stator current avoids thermal overloading of stator windings. For
excessive inductive current it acts on AVR after a certain time lag & decreases the
excitation current to limit the inductive current to limit value.
But for excessive capacitive current it acts on the AVR without time delay to
increase the excitation & thereby reduce the capacitive loading.
It depends on the type of insulation class of Stator.

Load angle limiter

It generates DC signal proportional to the load or rotor angle from the
Stator current & Voltage. It depends on leading power factor operation.

Maximum operating temp for diff classes of insulation for generators running
continuously.
