Order School Supplies Online

Dear Parents/Guardians: Your teachers at Fort McMurray Islamic School are excited to offer you the opportunity to purchase your school supplies through School Start for the 2012/2013 school year. This process will save you both time and money. There are a few simple steps to ensure your child will receive standardized brand name products (specified by each teacher). We will be sending you a specific grade level supply list. This order form has a Starter Package (base package) as well as Additional Items. The Additional Items are mandatory by each teacher; they include items such as pencil cases, sharpeners, and calculators. These products do not need to be purchased on a year to year basis if you already have them. You can place your order online at www.schoolstart.ca . Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal are accepted. Place your order online and you will be entered for a chance to win a $750 gas card! Late orders will be accepted online until September 15, 2012 ($5 late fee will apply). The supplies will be packaged and delivered directly to the school in August before your child arrives, labeled with his/ her name on the School Start Package. Registration form
As parents may be aware, the Islamic School is now asking for parents to fill in a registration form for each of your children for the next school year. The form is due to the office on Friday, June 8, 2012 latest. Alberta Education has a new policy that states that every parent must fill in a new registration form every year for every child in the school. This must be done so that childrens information stays current and up to date. We have sent home blank registration forms with your child already. However, there is also the option of filling out the registration form online and sending it to the school. This can be done online at: www.fmpsd.ab.ca When finished please send the registration form back to: FMISregistration@fmpsd.ab.ca Please call the office with any questions.

Robotics Championship
On Saturday May 26, 2012, FMIS and Greely Road hosted a Robotics competition were students from schools all over the district competed against each other with robots that the teams had built. We are very proud of the Robotics team for working so hard and doing such a good job. Thank you to: Rabeet Raja Areebah Fajar Ganiyat Abdullah Way to go everyone!!!!!!! Basketball Game Recap

If you are a female you would have had the opportunity to witness an exhilarating and competitive display of great basketball between the teachers and Grade 7 and 8 girls on Friday, May 18, 2012. Amid the sounds of the enthusiastic support from KG6 grade girls, and Islamic anasheed, an intense game was played. It was a close game in the first quarter with the girls tying the teachers at 8 points. However, the teachers started taking big strides in the second, third and fourth quarter with superstar Ms. Williams scoring an astonishing 18 points! In the end, the teachers won the game 44-17. Way to go girls!!!

Relay for Life

Ms. Strathie took it upon herself to raise funds as well as awareness for the Cancer foundation this past week through a cupcake and ice cream sale, as well as a jeans day!! This is what she has to say: I really want to thank you for your support in the Relay for Life. The cupcake sale was a huge success and raised $361.00.

2011/2012 Year End Assembly

On June 17, 2012, FMIS will be hosting the 2011-2012 year-end assembly! Parents and community members are invited to attend this event! Where: Keyano Theatre When: Sunday, June 17, 2012 from 6:30-9:00 What: Student recitations and awards, volunteer and Who: Open to the community Refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there!

My cupcake sale fundraiser and the ice cream sale money community recognition has brought my total to $506.00. I am completely ecstatic!! $75 for jeans day went to cancer foundation. Way to go Amy! And thank you for the support FMIS!

New Outcomes Based Report Cards Coming Soon

In November of 2012, the Fort McMurray Public School District will be implementing a new K 6 report card. This report card will be outcomes based which means student progress will be reported differently than what you are used to currently. The new elementary report card is tied directly to the Alberta curriculum. Albertas curriculum is outcomes-basedit describes what your child is expected to know and be able to do each year in each subject. The report card tells you if your child has met these expectations. The report card focuses on clear descriptions of how well your child has acquired the key skills, knowledge and attitudes in each subject. The report card does not involve percentages in elementary school. Instead it uses four levels of achievement to help describe how well your child has met expectations. Parents will be invited to information sessions with your School Council some time before the end of this school year and again in the fall of 2012. Please check your schools website and newsletters for details. Opportunities will be provided for parents to give feedback.

Coping with Personal Problems

Who does not have problems? Problems are a part of life. If it were not for distance and separation, people would never know the joy of meeting and reunion. If it were not for poverty, people would not know wealth. And if it were not for sorrow, people would not know joy. In this manner, Allah has permitted the world to be a place of passage, where pleasure is accompanied by pain and laughter by tears, a world where the degree and severity of suffering is commensurate to the degree of happiness a person feels when that suffering goes away. In spite of all this, the goodness, companionship, and human welfare that social interactions bring about can never be attained by a person who lives in isolation. The evils brought about by seclusion are far greater than the discomfort that comes from dealing with others. How many people have tried to solve their problems by cutting off their dealings with others and going into seclusion? They seek to treat their ailments with something that is a sickness itself. They wind up longing to return to the very circumstances that they had so much detested before. Specialists in problem management have set down the following practical steps for dealing with one's problems. These steps can be summarized as follows: 1. Perceiving and recognizing the problem. 2. Defining the problem correct 3. Research, examination, and fact finding, with a focus on pinpointing causes. 4. Setting down alternatives and options, then evaluating them and weighing their pros and cons. 5. Determining the option that will provide the best solution to the problem. It is related from Ibn Mas`d that Allah's Messenger said: "The best form of worship is to wait for relief." [Sunan al-Tirmidh (3571), alBazzr (Majma` al-Zaw'id 10/147), and al-Bayhaq in Shu`ab al-Imn (7/204)] This narration, though, is weak. [1] At the same time, there can be no doubt that expecting relief from Allah is a form of worship, since it is part of being patient. Sometimes the best solution is to postpone action and be patient until the right opportunity comes along for a solution to be sought.
