I think this standard wants me to realize that a competent teacher needs to always set an example

for her students during the school day. Teachers need to appropriately model reading, writing,

speaking, and listening skills during all instructional times to be truly effective. It is not enough for a

teacher to teach the skills, if they are not modeling them as well. Teachers are one of the most

influential people in a young child͛s life, therefore, it is imperative that the teacher exhibits effective

English language arts skills whenever they are in front of the students.

This artifact demonstrates my understanding of the standard because I used appropriate English

language arts skills when creating my weekly newsletter that is sent home with each of my students.

Through the newsletter, I am modeling effective writing skills in the English language they have been

learning about and I am using them to compose the letter. Students need to be shown examples of

the skills they are learning to truly understand the importance behind learning them. Through my
 newsletters children are given a real life example of why learning how to write in Standard English is

so important. This exact artifact has been used in my practice and it has impacted my teaching

because it reflects my mastery of the English language and my determination to set a positive

example to my students by always using Standard English when I am writing anything they are going

to be reading.

Through this artifact I have been able to think about how important it is to model appropriate

speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills when I am in front of my students. It is crucial for

students to see the purpose behind what they are learning and through my constant modeling, I will

exhibit this vitality to my students. I am more prepared to teach and learn in a Diverse Society as a

result of satisfactorily meeting the standard because I understand that I must always practice what I

preach if I expect students to take the lessons I teach seriously. I am aware that my students will

speak a variety of different languages which makes it even more important that I am constantly

teaching Standard English and reinforcing English through my usage throughout the school day. I

need to be the role model for students to follow and as a result of satisfactorily meeting this

standard, I believe I am more prepared to teach and learn in a diverse society.
