MOONLIGHT REMEDIES
Spa Alila at Alila Ubud offers its ‘Moonlight Remedies’, drawing on the energy of the moon and
rhythms of nature. Spa-lovers can choose to be pampered within the sanctuary of Spa Alila’s indoor
spa suites or outside amidst the lush green surroundings of the resort’s Sculpture Garden on the banks
of the Ayung River. The remedy evokes complete mind and body relaxation as you are surrounded by
nature’s lushness, breathing in the fresh air and lured by the sound of birdcalls. During a new moon or full
moon when the moon’s energy is believed to be at its strongest, the message treatments are conducted
outdoors in a custom spa tent, open to nature yet completely private, harnessing the ‘lunar energy’ to
promote healing and spiritual growth. The ‘moonlight remedies’ treat you to a complete spa ritual that
begins at the garden and into the caring hands of your personal Spa Alila therapist. Currently, four of Spa
Alila’s destination-inspired massage therapies are offered by moonlight: Balinese Massage, Alila Recovery
Signature Massage, and the India Head Massage.

COVETED CERTIFICATION
Meliã Bali has announced its recent achievement as the first hotel in Asia and one of only five hotels
in the world to be given the distinction of EarthCheck Platinum by EarthCheck; the world’s leading
sustainable travel and tourism certification organization. The EarthCheck Program is widely regarded
as the world’s most scientifically rigorous, and is focused on maximizing operational efficiencies to
minimize CO2e (Equivalent carbon dioxide) emissions, while supporting host communities. It looks
at key environmental indicators such as energy and water consumption, total waste production as
well as community commitment, to determine the level of performance. Only those organizations
that can consistently demonstrate operational practices that adhere to the highest environmental
standards over a period of 10 years receive the much-coveted Platinum Certification. Prior to achieving
certification, Meliã Bali successfully benchmarked and certified its operations each year, using the
EarthCheck tool. This involved the organization submitting a year’s worth of operational data and having it
compared to that of other organizations that are similar in kind. www.meliabali.com

the 1990’s, Agung Kurniawan was an artist who reflected social and political
issues in his works. Most of his works criticized the social condition in the
New Order Era (Orde Baru), which governed the country with an authoritarian
system. After the reformation in 1998, along with the birth of democracy in
Indonesia, many artists started to work on themes and concepts related to
political issues. Agung found that this situation made political issues boring
and not interesting anymore. In 2000, Agung’s “Cinderamata dari Dunia
Ketiga” work (Souvenirs from the Third World) depicted a self-criticism to artists
who have used the political theme as a commodification in their work. In his
boredom with art, Agung started functioning in alternative art organizations such
as IVAA (Indonesian Visual Art Archive), FKY (Jogjakarta Art Festival), and Kedai
Kebun Forum (a gallery in a restaurant to accommodate young artists). For
Agung, by developing alternative spaces and foundations art is more grounded
and can be enjoyed by a wider audience. “The Lines That Remind Me Of You”
is an idea of how Agung visits his past through art.

DIALOG OF MULTILAYERS
Leticia Balacek is an artist with a background in architecture and design,
and will be presenting her unique works of mixed media photographic collages,
video and art installations at the Sika Gallery in Ubud this month. First she
proposes, “How can you define yourself? How can you define a place, a
culture? Where is the essence of each thing? How can you feel it? How
can you describe it? Is it a picture or two? Is it a color? A smell? A particular
situation? A ritual? Textures. A texture that is created by a personal perception;
by a combination, a repetition, an overlapping of multiple images. Or maybe
only one.” Two works from her “Textures” collection will be presented: “Life is
