UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS FOR THE 2009 2010
ACADEMIC YEAR
CERTIFICATE, DIPLOMA AND DEGREE
PROGRAMMES
The following programmes are available for the 2009 – 2010 academic year:
A. CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
i. Proficiency in English Language (For applicants from nonEnglish speaking
countries only.)
B. DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES
The University of Ghana offers some Diploma programmes at its Accra City
Campus on a fulltime basis and others on Modular basis at the main University
Campus at Legon during the long vacations May to August, each year. Each
cohort of admitted students on the modular will therefore study over four long
vacation periods.

iii) PROGRAMMES TO BE OFFERED ON MODULAR BASIS
For the 20082009 academic year, the underlisted Diploma programmes will be
offered on Modular basis. Admitted students would come into residence on the main
University Campus at Legon during the long vacations of each year June to August.
The programmes have been structured to span a period of four long vacations.

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS (DIPLOMA)
With the exception of holders of Certificates in Statistics from the University of
Ghana, all other applicants to Diploma programmes must satisfy the following
minimum requirements besides any other conditions which may be stipulated for a
particular programme:

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS (DEGREE)
To be admitted to any Degree programme, Senior Secondary School candidates must
have: A Pass in All Four Core Subjects and Three best Electives
Specific subject for the various programmes are:
1. Humanities (BA)

· Three Electives(General Arts)
2. Engineering/Science (BSc)
· Core Mathematics, English & Integrated Science
· Three Electives from Biology, Chemistry, Physics &
Elective Mathematics
3. Agriculture (BSc)

· Three Electives from, Chemistry, Physics &
Biology/General Agriculture
4. Pharmacy (BPharm)
· Core Mathematics, English, Integrated Science & Social
Studies
· Three Electives from Biology, Chemistry and either

· Core Mathematics, English & Science ( Minimum C4

Other Qualifications: Other qualifications include International Baccalaurette (IB),
IGCSE, GCSE, the American Grades 12 and 13 examinations and other external
qualifications which have equivalences to the SSSCE and the GCE.
CANDIDATES IN POSSESSION OF A DIPLOMA:
University of Ghana Diploma Holders or its equivalent, with a Final Grade Point
Average (FGPA) of 3.25 or better in any of the programmes listed in this section, are
eligible to apply to the same area of study, and supported with two other subjects in a
related field, for admission to Level 200. Diploma holders in Accounting and Public
Administration, Theatre Arts, Dance Studies, African Music and General Music, may be
admitted to Level 300 in the BSc (Administration) and BFA programmes respectively.

** (Open to applicants who participated in the topup programme as at AUGUST
2008. In addition, such applicants would be expected to take an aptitude test at the
University on the 4 th of April 2009 at 9.00 a.m.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Applicants in this category WILL NOT APPLY ONLINE but will be required to
purchase and complete a Bachelor’s Degree Application Form designed for the
purpose and stamped ‘DIPLOMA TO DEGREE’.
D. CAMPUS/MODE OF DELIVERY CHOICE
Applicants may opt for programmes at the Main Campus at Legon or at the
following:
a) THE ACCRA CITY CAMPUS :
The Accra City Campus (Fee – Paying), offers courses in the Humanities on both full
time and parttime basis. The Campus currently offers courses leading to the award
of BA and BSc (Administration) degrees.
Bachelor of Arts:
Political Science, Economics, Sociology, History, Classics, Philosophy, English,
Linguistics, Religions, Psychology, Theatre Arts, Geography
Bachelor of Sc. in Administration (From Level 200. Selection is based on
performance at Level 100).
Persons who wish to study at the City Campus must satisfy the entry
requirements for the BA Programme.
b) DISTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAMME:
This Programme is run by the Institute of Adult Education, Legon and its 10
Regional Centres (Workers’ Colleges).
Programmes under this option are available at both Levels 100 and 200 and run as
follows:
i) Level 100 entrants: minimum period of eight (8) semesters (4 academic
years) and a maximum period of twelve (12) semesters (6 academic years)
ii) Level 200 entrants: minimum period of six (6) semesters (3 academic
years) and maximum of ten (10) semesters (5 academic years).
Courses on offer for the Bachelor of Arts Level 100 are: Economics, Geography
and Resource Development, Linguistics, Psychology, Sociology and History.
Courses to be offered at Level 200 are: Economics, Geography and Resource
Development, Linguistics, Psychology, Sociology, Information Studies, Social Work
and B.Sc. (Administration)
Mode of Delivery:
The Distance Education Programme is delivered through supported distance
education. There will be periodic meetings with course tutors at designated Study
Centres. All endofsemester examinations will be conducted at the University of
Ghana, Main Campus, at Legon or any other location to be determined by the
University.
FOOT NOTES
1. All applications except DIPLOMA to DEGREE, REAPPLICATIONS and
GHANAIANS WITH FOREIGN BACKGROUND and FOREIGN
APPLICANTS, must be submitted ONLINE at www.ug.edu.gh/admissions on
the purchase of the appropriate scratch card.
2. All applicants will be considered on the basis of result equivalents as provided
by the West African Examinations Council as per schedule below:
B2 B Very Good
B3 C Good
C4/ C5 / C6 D Credit
D7 / E8 E Pass
F9 F Fail
3. All applicants will be considered on the basis of results available to them as at
31st March 2009, which is the stipulated deadline for the submission of
applications.
4. The professional degrees at the College of Health Sciences are not offered at
Level 100. Candidates who intend to take any of these degrees (except Nursing
and Pharmacy, which admit direct into Level 100), should apply firstly to read
either Biological Science or Biomathematical Science in the Faculty of
Science.
5. Applicants to the Bachelor’s degree who are unable to meet the competitive
cutoff points determined by the Admissions Board for admission to preferred
programmes of study may subscribe to admission under the Full Feepaying
Scheme. Such candidates shall be required to meet the University’s minimum
requirement for admission. This admission will be offered under the
unutilised quota for foreign studentship. Interested applicants must indicate
this on their application forms.

HOW TO APPLY
i) APPLICANTS TO DEGREE AND DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES
Applicants should buy the appropriate Application Scratch Card and CAREFULLY
follow the instructions given.
ii) DIPLOMA TO DEGREE APPLICANTS
iii) GHANAIAN APPLICANTS WITH FOREIGN BACKGROUND
Applicants must purchase the appropriate form (blue printed) form and submit the
completed forms to the Admissions Office.

All Applicants must take note that the process for admission to the University of
Ghana is very transparent. Applicants should therefore beware of any characters who
may approach them on the pretext of assisting them gain admission for a fee.
