The following guide is an introduction to life science resources available from the
Magnus Wahlstrom Library at the University of Bridgeport. Resources are grouped
by those that are used for answering either foreground or background research
questions. For more information on forming a research question, or to obtain a

BOOKS (ELECTRONIC)

Online databases, electronic journals and books are available to the UB community
24-7, from any location across the globe – using your UBNet username and
password is the key to huge source of information. Wahlstrom Library’s digital book
collection continues to grow; with over 6,000 subject-specific electronic life science
texts from ebrary and NetLibrary, there’s a large amount of information available 24-

Virtual Dissector™: Based on the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human


Project, it is a portable resource that offers views and combinations of anatomic
structures unavailable in the real world, as well as enhancing the cadaver dissection
experience.

INTERNET RESOURCES

Tree of Life Web Project: a collection of information about biodiversity compiled


collaboratively by hundreds of expert and amateur contributors. Its goal is to contain
a page with pictures, text, and other information for every species and for each
group of organisms, living or extinct.

JOURNALS (ELECTRONIC)
One of the best ways to keep current on life science trends is to read the literature
that is frequently published in academic and trade journals. With over 1,650 titles in
Wahlstrom’s e-journal collection, there is a wide array of life science topics to choose
from and access 24-7 from any place around the globe. These titles will provide

ONLINE DATABASES

Using a UBNet username and password, any member of the UB community can
access online databases to get to the full text research they need 24-7. Wahlstrom
Library subscribes to several subject-specific databases (which in turn cross-search
thousands of indexed life science texts and journals):

Academic Search Premier: contains indexing and abstracts for 8,175 publications. Of
these, 6,794 are peer-reviewed, abstracted and indexed journals, over 4,700 are full
text, and 3,611 of the full text journals are peer-reviewed. PDF backfiles to 1975 or
further are available for well over one hundred journals, and searchable cited
references are provided for more than 1,000 titles. Academic Search Premier
contains unmatched full text coverage in biology, chemistry, education, engineering,
humanities, physics, psychology, religion & theology, and sociology.

Expanded Academic ASAP: indexes 2,600 titles, of which 1,400 are full-text, in a
wide variety of disciplines including social sciences, humanities, and science &
technology.

ImagesMD: Image database, compiling over 70,000 high-quality images spanning all
of internal medicine, all derived from Current Medicine Group LLC’s illustrated
atlases. Each image is accompanied by detailed and informative text written by over
2,000 contributing experts. Content is continually updated and expanded.

PubMed: a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine that provides


comprehensive coverage of the life sciences with a concentration in biomedicine. It
includes over 17 million citations from journals indexed in MEDLINE, and other life
science journals back to the 1950s.

JSTOR: an interdisciplinary archive that includes the last 100 years of approximately
200 core research journals published in the fields of economics, history, political
science, sociology, music, law, psychology, public policy and administration,
business, and education. All items are full text.

ScienceDirect: a collection of 1100 Elsevier journals for scientific, technical, and


medical research and offers access to journal content from more than 16 fields of
science, including the social sciences.

Scopus: a comprehensive database for scientific, technical and medical information,


containing approximately 13,000 journal titles from 4,000 publishers, and abstracts
going back to 1966. Contains citations and abstracts for psychology books, book
chapters, and dissertations and journal articles. International in scope, indexes over
1,700 publications in 30 languages.
