C. Course Description
This course is designed to improve students’ grammatical accuracy in writing and speaking as
well as increase their efficiency in reading and comprehending different materials in English
such as academic books, stories, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, etc.
In terms of grammar, this course includes intensive review and practice of essential points such
as verb tenses, noun forms and modals in a communicative context with an emphasis on
meanings and usages. Students are allowed to practice what they have learnt in all four skills
through various exercises from the core book and the CD_ROM.
With regard to reading comprehension skills, this course covers many current topics about the
nature, society and human beings (such as Global Climate Changes, Global Diet Choices,
History of the changing Family, Clues to World Cultures, etc) so as to develop students’
awareness of their surrounding world and equip them with real- life high- frequency vocabulary.
Certain basic reading skills (recognizing main and supporting ideas, reading between the lines)
and critical thinking skills (analyzing, synthesizing, predicting, evaluating or summarizing) are
introduced and developed through diverse exercises. Some typical strategies in taking the
TOEFL iBT reading test are also recommended and trained, which offers students better
preparations for the Reading and Grammar 3 course.

D. Course Objectives
Grammar
1. Provide students with theory and practice of essential grammatical points so that they can
write and speak correctly in English.
Reading
2. Develop students’ literal, interpretive, and critical comprehension of reading texts
3. Expand students’ vocabulary about nature, society and human issues as well as increase
their reading speed
4. Improve students’ study skills like discussion, self-study, or presentation skills.
5. Introduce some typical strategies in taking the TOEFL iBT reading tests

E. Learning Outcomes
Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to :
Grammar
1. Identify basic parts of speech in texts; correct errors in basic grammatical points and self-
monitor correct use of English
2. Employ target grammatical forms in oral responses and written assignments in English
Reading
3. Analyze and interpret reading materials quickly and effectively
4. Comprehend organizational pattern used to develop the author’s thesis
5. Discuss various subjects based on reading materials’ content and vocabulary
6. Demonstrate familiarity with some typical strategies in taking the TOELF iBT reading tests
7. Develop better learning skills, both individually and in groups

F. How to study this course?


 This course involves lecture and demonstration by the instructor (about 20 periods) with
students participation in basic concepts and skills, along with in-class practice including
feedback, coaching and evaluation by the instructor;
 Class and group discussions of major topics as well as skill-building exercises are required;
 Students are required to actively join in-class activities and attend classes regularly;
 Audio-visual teaching aids (CD players, OHP, computer, etc) are advisable in boosting the
quality of teaching and learning;
 At least two periods of independent work (including preparation for the coming lesson and
completion of exercises) done out of class are required for each period of in-class study;
 Students will also be required to complete many types of assignments outside of the regular
class time such as practicing skills, reading required materials and prepa ring for a
presentation;
 The instructor is required to give students guidance and help, especially in learning
independently and finding appropriate materials or learning tools.
