When Is The Best Time To Go To Hong Kong?
Winter Season (December - March) is the most relaxing and comfortable time to go to
Hong Kong but besides the weather, there's little else to do since the "Sale Season" occurs
during Summer. There are some sales during Christmas & Chinese New Year but 90% of
the clothes are for winter. Hong Kong can get very foggy during winter, as such, visit to the
Peak is a hit-or-miss affair. A foggy bird's eye view of HK isn't really nice.
Summer Season (May - October) is similar to Manila's weather, very hot but moving around
in Hong Kong can get extra uncomfortable because of the high humidity which gives the
"sticky" feeling. Hong Kong's rainy season also falls on their summer, July & August has
the highest rainfall count and the typhoons also arrive in these months. The Sale /
Shopping Festival is from the start of July to the start of September. If the sky is clear, the
view from the Peak is great.
Avoid going to Hong Kong when there are large-scale exhibitions or ongoing tournaments
like the Hong Kong Sevens Rugby Tournament because hotel prices will be significantly
higher.

When taking the Airport Express to the Airport to catch a flight, simply stroll to the airline
check-in-counter on Level 7 of Passenger Terminal 1 or head to Passenger Terminal 2 by

immigration & baggage claim areas you can simply walk straight through the Greeting
Hall & board a city-bound Airport Express train on the same level.

On arrival in Hong Kong, head to the Airport Express Customer Service Centre where you
can buy the Octopus Card. The card costs $150 (Adults), $100 (Students), $70 (Elders &
Children) & will allow you to ride the Airport Express, MTR, KCR rail lines, buses, trams &
ferries – Basically most forms of transport. Not only that you can use it in many
restaurants & common shops like 7-11 & even many vending machines!
The purchase price includes a $50 deposit, while the balance is credit for you to use on the
transport system. Once you run out of value, just head to the nearest MTR station or 7-11
where you can top-up the card's value by however much you need.
When you leave Hong Kong, head to the Airport Express Customer Service Centre at the
airport & you can get your $50 deposit back. Any leftover value on the card is also refunded
to you.

Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree Æ (8am - 6pm)

There are, in fact, two Wishing Trees. However, the bigger tree nearer to the road is more
famous. Also called the Spirit Tree, the one near the road was originally used to make
wishes related to our personal life, like career, academics, health & wealth. The smaller
one, nearer to the temple, was used for wishes related to marriage & children. However,
over the years, the rule has changed and people now simply go to, Lam Tsuen Wishing
Tree that is the bigger tree for all their wishes.
To make a wish, one needs to first buy a "bao die" (*). A "bao die" will have a large
yellow paper on which you would need to write your wish. The paper is then rolled and tied
to an orange. It is then tossed up the tree with hopes of it clinging on to its branches. If it
doesn't hang in three tries, it is said that the wish made is too greedy.

through fortune telling.

Repulse Bay | 9
The buses are double decker & make sure you sit in the front & on the upper level. The
scenery on the way to Stanley }~ is so great that you won't like to miss, e.g. Repulsive
bay, the view of Ocean Park cable car & theme park. On the way back, you may take a
different number from what you took just now, as they may go by different route. Also try to
sit with someone (Again on the upper desk & front), but why sit with someone else?
Because there will be many smelly people get on bus at the Repulsive Bay later on. When
you back to Central, you may like to go for a drink at LKF which is just near by.

Sunny City Fashion in Hong Kong Industrial Centre
• Shan Shui Po Markets Area: This area has about 250 fashion wholesalers,
exporters & factory outlets selling direct to the public & is a major area for "bargain"
shopping for ladies (mainly casual) fashion. The outlets are located on Cheung Sha
Wan Road from its beginning at the junction with Tai Po Road approximately from
numbers 2 to 260 on the north side of the road & from approximately numbers 171
to 269 on the south side of the road. There are also a number of outlets located off
Cheung Sha Wan Road on Pei Ho Street, Kweilin Street & Hei Ho Street. Most
outlets are at ground level although some are located on upper floors of buildings.
The shops along Cheung Sha Wan Road deal almost exclusively in ladies fashion
although there are a few exceptions such as the Leung Tim Choppers Factory Shop
at number 221 which sells a remarkable array of rather frightening implements.

Bottomline: YES, MOST ELECTRONICS (Laptops/Digicams) ARE CHEAPER IN HK.

However, there’ll always be risks in buying electronics abroad, Hong Kong is not an
exception. If you think you’re willing to take the risk of buying a very expensive item like
laptops abroad including the risk of getting taxed upon return to your country, go ahead. A
lot of brands DO NOT have international warranties which means when you’ve a problem,
you cannot have them fixed in your country. Lenovo & Asus as far as I know, have

When you’re taking the escalator or the Walkalator, always remember to stay on the RIGHT
SIDE if you do not plan to walk. Left side are always for those in a hurry.
The Smoking Ban, as it is commonly referred to, bans smoking indoors in restaurants,
workplaces, schools, karaoke lounges, as well as beaches, swimming pools, sports
grounds & public parks. The ban came into force on 1 January 2007.

Don't get picked by pickpockets - always keep an eye on your belongings. They even work
in teams, sometimes even involving a vehicle to suddenly stop in front of you while
someone else does the lifting! I’ve also known an unsuspecting tourist shopping in a store
who set his backpack down to try on some jeans and afterwards his wallet was missing!
Remember! Their hands are faster than your eyes!
Watch out for how much the taxi-driver charges you. There are some taxi drivers in sheep's
clothing. They either trick the meter, go the long way, or cover up the decimal point of the
fare on the meter. The safe thing is to know how much it should cost & also get a receipt
from the driver. If they can't give you a receipt, copy down the licence number & the driver's
name (Shown on the dashboard). But then just a small percentage of the taxi-drivers are
wolves.
Don't buy electronic products without marked prices: (This is probably the biggest tourist
trap here into which many have fallen) Many of the shops on Nathan Road in Kowloon
selling electronic products don't display the prices on the items. Many tourists have been
scammed or cheated. One ploy is to give you an unbelievably good price, after they have
your money, they say they’re out of stock, offering you another item but at an outrageous
price. Some tourists have said that even calling the police did not help.
Watch out when doing anything with a rickshaw: even taking a picture in, with, at, or even
OF a rickshaw will cost you money! So settle on the price with the driver BEFORE you click
that camera! There is no fixed price on the ride or a picture, but it is said that a picture costs
HK$10 - $HK20 (US$1.25 - US$2.50).
Look both ways before crossing a street: If you’re from a country where the traffic goes on
the right, you will want to pay special attention to this since in Hong Kong when it comes to
traffic, left is right & right is wrong! Besides, pedestrians don't necessarily have the right of
way - at least many drivers think that.
Take along a pack of tissue & a windbreaker: a lot of indoor places & vehicles can be very
cold with the air conditioning at full blast (even in winter), so take along a windbreaker.
Except for more expensive ones, many restaurants don't provide napkins. Have a pack of
tissue handy.
Getting mistaken for "I.I."s - I.I. is short for illegal immigrants. If you look Asian, be sure to
carry your passport with you. It is required by law for everyone to carry either one's Hong
Kong ID card or passport. Police officers routinely stop people on the street to check for ID.
There is no "probable cause" clause that I know of. As long as you don't look right, you
could be stopped & checked.
Avoid buying cooked food from hawkers pushing a little cart.

Beware of those Chinese Herb/Medical shops which they will bring you during City Tours.
They will offer you FREE medical checkup, once you go & see the doctor, after seeing
doctor, before you know it, they grind all the herbs for you already for you to buy. Since all
mixed, you’ve no choice but to buy those over priced herbs which you might not even know
what it contains. Seen at other forums that if you claim never bring money, they’ll go all the
way to your hotel to collect money. Just don’t go into the shop even if got lots of *Fake*
freebies.
Weather Seasons
Hong Kong's weather is mainly hot & humid. Best time to visit, is November - February.
November - January, usually around 20 degrees celsius, not much rain, sunshine most of
the time, & not humid. It's a wonderful time to visit. February can get quite chilly, and there
have been a few 9 degrees in the past 2 years in February. But if you are coming from a
cold weather country, then it would not be a problem for you!
March starts getting a little warmer again, but starts to become quite humid, & begins to
have more rainfall. April - June are the wettest months, & most humid. Breathing practically
becomes unbearable in polluted areas like Central, Causeway Bay, & Mongkok.
July - September is typhoon season, although it hasn't had many terrible typhoons in the
last 3 years. But the temperature rises to as high as 34 degrees!
October is still warm, but cooler than summer months, & still some rain.
Hong Kong during a sales period is a complete retail therapy course! During the winter (late
December - February) & the summer sale (July - September) major discounts are available
for the avid shopper. Avoid October due to higher price. Flights & hotels price will go down
in November.

All You Need To Know About HK Taxi System: Taxi Fare From Hong Kong
International Airport
A taxi is an ideal vehicle for short-runs. There are three colors of taxis in Hong Kong. Red
ones can cover most Hong Kong destinations except Tung Chung Road & roads in south
Lantau Island. Green cabs run around in New Territories & on some appointed roads on
Lantau Island. Blue taxis serve most destinations on Lantau Island. If you are planning to
go to New Territories or Lantau Island, choose a green or blue taxi as more reasonably
priced than red. All the taxis can touch Hong Kong International Airport but may not be
available in Discovery Bay.
Note: If your journey covers the Lantau Link, you are required to pay an extra toll fee of
HK$30 even to downtown or Lantau Island. And if you using toll tunnels, the extra fee is
also your responsibility

To avoid problems, always get your destination written in Chinese on a card. Be sure to
bring loose change instead of HK$500 & HK$1,000 bank notes. Taxi drivers are not obliged
to make change. Get on & off cars on the left side of the street.
Roads with painted double yellow lines are forbidden zones for picking up passengers; you
cannot take a taxi here. During rush hours, taxis may stop in front of some hotels. Always
ask for the bill before leaving the taxi as the car number is listed on it. If you’re not satisfied
with the service or you left something in the car, you can complain through (852)28899999.
Depending your destination & place of alight, you may only take some of the taxi. For
example, if you are from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) & going to Hong Kong
Island or Kowloon, you can only take the red taxi & the fare charges are shown in the figure
below:

If you are going to New Territories, then both Red & Green taxi are alright. But only Lantau
taxi for Lantau Island. Places like Disney Land, all can go:

changes, they indicate the range rather than saying red is cheaper than green (Which
