When Is The Best Time To Go To Hong Kong?

Winter Season (December - March) is the most relaxing and comfortable time to go to
Hong Kong but besides the weather, there's little else to do since the "Sale Season" occurs
during Summer. There are some sales during Christmas & Chinese New Year but 90% of
the clothes are for winter. Hong Kong can get very foggy during winter, as such, visit to the
Peak is a hit-or-miss affair. A foggy bird's eye view of HK isn't really nice.

Summer Season (May - October) is similar to Manila's weather, very hot but moving around
in Hong Kong can get extra uncomfortable because of the high humidity which gives the
"sticky" feeling. Hong Kong's rainy season also falls on their summer, July & August has
the highest rainfall count and the typhoons also arrive in these months. The Sale /
Shopping Festival is from the start of July to the start of September. If the sky is clear, the
view from the Peak is great.

Avoid going to Hong Kong when there are large-scale exhibitions or ongoing tournaments
like the Hong Kong Sevens Rugby Tournament because hotel prices will be significantly
higher.

Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree Ə (8am - 6pm)

There are, in fact, two Wishing Trees. However, the bigger tree nearer to the road is more
famous. Also called the Spirit Tree, the one near the road was originally used to make
wishes related to our personal life, like career, academics, health & wealth. The smaller
one, nearer to the temple, was used for wishes related to marriage & children. However,
over the years, the rule has changed and people now simply go to, Lam Tsuen Wishing
Tree that is the bigger tree for all their wishes.

To make a wish, one needs to first buy a "bao die" (*). A "bao die" will have a large
yellow paper on which you would need to write your wish. The paper is then rolled and tied
to an orange. It is then tossed up the tree with hopes of it clinging on to its branches. If it
doesn't hang in three tries, it is said that the wish made is too greedy.

OUTLET & FACTORY SHOPS

Hong Kong has an increasing number & variety of outlet & factory shops ranging from
famous brand & designer shops to small shops & stalls selling local goods often produced
for export & often factory overruns or seconds. Detailed below are lists of

(i) Known "famous name" outlet shops & factory shops trading under own brand name

(ii) Other outlets, factory shops & warehouses ranging from those selling luxury designer
brands to cheap locally made export goods, seconds, factory overruns etc

(iii) General streets/districts where outlets can be found.

The list was originally compiled during May 2009 when visits were made to many of these
shops & the list has since been updated in accordance with changes notified to us & during
further visits. The list was last updated in May 2010. Whilst every effort has been made to
verify the accuracy of the list it has not been possible to visit every shop as outlets are
constantly opening, closing & relocating. There is also a recent trend towards "temporary
shops" where premises are rented for only a short period during which intensive sales take
place. THE LIST DOES NOT INCLUDE DETAILS OF INDIVIDUAL OUTLETS IN THE
SHAM SHUI PO MARKETS (CHEUNG SHA WAN ROAD) AREA OR HONG KONG
INDUSTRIAL CENTRE (LARGE FASHION MALL) AT LAI CHI KOK BOTH OF WHICH
ARE MAJOR AREAS FOR FASHION OUTLETS WITH HUNDREDS OF FACTORY
SHOPS, WHOLESALERS & EXPORTERS MANY OF WHICH SELL DIRECT TO THE
PUBLIC. PLEASE SEE COMMENTS UNDER THE SECTION "GENERAL AREAS FOR
OUTLET/FACTORY SHOPS & BARGAIN SHOPPING" BELOW FOR FURTHER
INFORMATION ABOUT OUTLETS IN THESE AREAS. Notification of any additions,
alterations & information such as type of goods/brands stocked to
contactus@hongkongextras.com is always welcome in order that this list can be kept up to
date for the benefit of future visitors & are grateful to all who have taken the trouble to
inform us of amendments. Particular thanks to the Citygate Management Office of Swire
Properties for updated information regarding Citygate Outlets & supplying photographs and
to other outlets who have kindly provided information.

Who can resist the aroma of freshly baked Portuguese style egg tarts? Nobody does it
better than Choi Heong Yuen Bakery. Their secret? Fold and roll, fold & roll & continue to
fold & roll over & over again to give the pastry a light, flaky texture. The pastry is then
refrigerated and filled with rich, creamy egg yolk batter. Finally, the egg tarts are baked for
exactly 15 minutes. Only a number of tarts are made each day, so first come first serve.
Also, a must try are their delicious almond cookies.

Prepaid SIM Card With FREE IDD Service

There are plenty of prepaid mobile services in the market. In Hong Kong, all you need is
just go to 7-11 & immediately you can get a SIM card & start to make call or receiving call.
There is the IDD Talk Stored Value SIM Card from Peoples, which I find that most suitable
for tourists, expats & other foreigners. Why is that so? Because it provides Free IDD to 30
Countries/Destinations, including China. That means basically you can make a phone call
to your home countries & that is being charged for local call (About HKD 0.25/min). The

83
Page 84 of 98 Chris’ Copyrights @
2011
SIM card itself just costs HKD60 with HKD58 value inside or buy a HKD98 with HKD98
value inside. Pretty a good deal. So why pay roaming charge to call back your home while
you are having fun in Hong Kong?

All About Electronics

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM ELECTRONICS STORES ALONG NATHAN ROAD.

THIS IS THE GOLDEN RULE.

If you’re going to buy a camera/lens below P20k, rid yourself of all the hassles, worries &
warranty concerns.

Apple has a universal price worldwide but US has a significantly lower price. As for HK, the
difference is not that big. For reference, you can visit Apple Hong Kong's Online Store.

Bottomline: YES, MOST ELECTRONICS (Laptops/Digicams) ARE CHEAPER IN HK.

However, there’ll always be risks in buying electronics abroad, Hong Kong is not an
exception. If you think you’re willing to take the risk of buying a very expensive item like
laptops abroad including the risk of getting taxed upon return to your country, go ahead. A
lot of brands DO NOT have international warranties which means when you’ve a problem,
you cannot have them fixed in your country. Lenovo & Asus as far as I know, have
international warranties. Rarely do you find the same case for digital cameras.

How To Avoid Getting Ripped Off:

• Before going to HK, know the item you want to buy & the price of the item in your
country & in the US (i.e. Amazon.com).
• Do not enter a store with zero knowledge of your target item, you’ll be victimized by
"sales talk". Do your research at home.
• Do not let store staff open sealed items when you don't have intentions of buying
the item yet.
• Do not give your credit card or money until you’re in possession of a brand new /
sealed version of the item.
• Check your item thoroughly after paying & check if the box includes everything it
should have.
• If an item suddenly becomes out of stock, leave the store immediately & ignore their
explanations.
• Avoid stores with no locals inside or stores with aggressive & "friendly" staff on the
lookout for customers.
• If the price is too good to be true, chances are, it is.

• There are reputable chain stores like Chow Tai Fook.

Where To Eat

If you’ve to eat in a fastfood, Maxim's (MX) is a decent fastfood.

Jollibee Hong Kong - Shop Z4, G/F, Eurotrade Centre, 13 Connaught Rd. (Central Exit B |
Beside World Wide House)

For western restaurants, The Spaghetti House is affordable but decent. The reason why
there are almost no western restaurants listed below is primarily due to the price bracket.
Western food (like Outback & other steakhouse) are generally good but very expensive.

Japanese & Korean cuisine are also famous in HK but again, expensive. For sit-down (non-
fastfood) restaurants, prepare at least HK$100/person.

Reminders

If you’re not sure of something, ASK! Do not be afraid to ask for help from the locals, use
English.

Pack Light as much as possible. Bring comfortable shoes for long hours of walking.

Do not forget to bring basic medicine (Loperamide/Paracetamol) & muscle pain ointment for
long hours of walking.

When you’re taking the escalator or the Walkalator, always remember to stay on the RIGHT
SIDE if you do not plan to walk. Left side are always for those in a hurry.

The Smoking Ban, as it is commonly referred to, bans smoking indoors in restaurants,
workplaces, schools, karaoke lounges, as well as beaches, swimming pools, sports
grounds & public parks. The ban came into force on 1 January 2007.

Don't get picked by pickpockets - always keep an eye on your belongings. They even work
in teams, sometimes even involving a vehicle to suddenly stop in front of you while
someone else does the lifting! I’ve also known an unsuspecting tourist shopping in a store
who set his backpack down to try on some jeans and afterwards his wallet was missing!
Remember! Their hands are faster than your eyes!

Watch out for how much the taxi-driver charges you. There are some taxi drivers in sheep's
clothing. They either trick the meter, go the long way, or cover up the decimal point of the
fare on the meter. The safe thing is to know how much it should cost & also get a receipt
from the driver. If they can't give you a receipt, copy down the licence number & the driver's
name (Shown on the dashboard). But then just a small percentage of the taxi-drivers are
wolves.

Don't buy electronic products without marked prices: (This is probably the biggest tourist
trap here into which many have fallen) Many of the shops on Nathan Road in Kowloon
selling electronic products don't display the prices on the items. Many tourists have been
scammed or cheated. One ploy is to give you an unbelievably good price, after they have
your money, they say they’re out of stock, offering you another item but at an outrageous
price. Some tourists have said that even calling the police did not help.

Watch out when doing anything with a rickshaw: even taking a picture in, with, at, or even
OF a rickshaw will cost you money! So settle on the price with the driver BEFORE you click
that camera! There is no fixed price on the ride or a picture, but it is said that a picture costs
HK$10 - $HK20 (US$1.25 - US$2.50).

Look both ways before crossing a street: If you’re from a country where the traffic goes on
the right, you will want to pay special attention to this since in Hong Kong when it comes to
traffic, left is right & right is wrong! Besides, pedestrians don't necessarily have the right of
way - at least many drivers think that.

Take along a pack of tissue & a windbreaker: a lot of indoor places & vehicles can be very
cold with the air conditioning at full blast (even in winter), so take along a windbreaker.
Except for more expensive ones, many restaurants don't provide napkins. Have a pack of
tissue handy.

Getting mistaken for "I.I."s - I.I. is short for illegal immigrants. If you look Asian, be sure to
carry your passport with you. It is required by law for everyone to carry either one's Hong
Kong ID card or passport. Police officers routinely stop people on the street to check for ID.
There is no "probable cause" clause that I know of. As long as you don't look right, you
could be stopped & checked.

Avoid buying cooked food from hawkers pushing a little cart.

Beware of those Chinese Herb/Medical shops which they will bring you during City Tours.
They will offer you FREE medical checkup, once you go & see the doctor, after seeing
doctor, before you know it, they grind all the herbs for you already for you to buy. Since all
mixed, you’ve no choice but to buy those over priced herbs which you might not even know
what it contains. Seen at other forums that if you claim never bring money, they’ll go all the
way to your hotel to collect money. Just don’t go into the shop even if got lots of *Fake*
freebies.

Weather Seasons

Hong Kong's weather is mainly hot & humid. Best time to visit, is November - February.
November - January, usually around 20 degrees celsius, not much rain, sunshine most of
the time, & not humid. It's a wonderful time to visit. February can get quite chilly, and there
have been a few 9 degrees in the past 2 years in February. But if you are coming from a
cold weather country, then it would not be a problem for you!

March starts getting a little warmer again, but starts to become quite humid, & begins to
have more rainfall. April - June are the wettest months, & most humid. Breathing practically
becomes unbearable in polluted areas like Central, Causeway Bay, & Mongkok.

July - September is typhoon season, although it hasn't had many terrible typhoons in the
last 3 years. But the temperature rises to as high as 34 degrees!

October is still warm, but cooler than summer months, & still some rain.
Hong Kong during a sales period is a complete retail therapy course! During the winter (late
December - February) & the summer sale (July - September) major discounts are available
for the avid shopper. Avoid October due to higher price. Flights & hotels price will go down
in November.

What To Wear When

7 Day Weather Forecast can be found here -> http://www.hko.gov.hk/wxinfo/currwx/fnd.htm

All You Need To Know About HK Taxi System: Taxi Fare From Hong Kong
International Airport

A taxi is an ideal vehicle for short-runs. There are three colors of taxis in Hong Kong. Red
ones can cover most Hong Kong destinations except Tung Chung Road & roads in south
Lantau Island. Green cabs run around in New Territories & on some appointed roads on
Lantau Island. Blue taxis serve most destinations on Lantau Island. If you are planning to
go to New Territories or Lantau Island, choose a green or blue taxi as more reasonably
priced than red. All the taxis can touch Hong Kong International Airport but may not be
available in Discovery Bay.
Note: If your journey covers the Lantau Link, you are required to pay an extra toll fee of
HK$30 even to downtown or Lantau Island. And if you using toll tunnels, the extra fee is
also your responsibility
Hong Kong taxi prices:
Price Red Taxi Green Taxi Blue Taxi
Flag-down-rate (for the prior 2km(1.24 miles)) HK$15 HK$12.5 HK$12
Every 0.2km (0.12 mile) or one minute waiting HK$1.4 HK$1.2 HK$1.2
One piece of luggage (exclude portable luggage) HK$5 HK$4 HK$5
One pet HK$5 HK$4 HK$5
Reservation through telephone HK$5 HK$4 HK$5

94
Page 95 of 98 Chris’ Copyrights @

To avoid problems, always get your destination written in Chinese on a card. Be sure to
bring loose change instead of HK$500 & HK$1,000 bank notes. Taxi drivers are not obliged
to make change. Get on & off cars on the left side of the street.
Roads with painted double yellow lines are forbidden zones for picking up passengers; you
cannot take a taxi here. During rush hours, taxis may stop in front of some hotels. Always
ask for the bill before leaving the taxi as the car number is listed on it. If you’re not satisfied
with the service or you left something in the car, you can complain through (852)28899999.
Depending your destination & place of alight, you may only take some of the taxi. For
example, if you are from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) & going to Hong Kong
Island or Kowloon, you can only take the red taxi & the fare charges are shown in the figure
below:

95
Page 96 of 98 Chris’ Copyrights @
2011
If you are going to New Territories, then both Red & Green taxi are alright. But only Lantau
taxi for Lantau Island. Places like Disney Land, all can go:

Obviously, you can see that the fare to New Territories for red & green taxi got some
changes, they indicate the range rather than saying red is cheaper than green (Which

96

cause the taxi drivers stuck the airport a few weeks ago):
