Living the Lectionary

The Fourth Sunday In

Lent

Season: Lent
Week of April 3rd

“Enlightened”

About the Season: We are in the season of Lent.

The season of Lent is a season of preparing our
hearts for the joy and celebration of Easter. We
prepare for that celebration by considering the cost
of our Easter joy, the suffering and death of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
About this Sunday: Having faith in Jesus means
that your eyes are open to the image of God’s will
and God’s grace. You are able to see the great gifts
God has given to you, the sins that you commit daily,
and the love of God given in Jesus Christ that is the
greatest gift of all.
Reflecting on the Readings:
• I Samuel 16:1-13 – Seeing God’s choice –
Sometimes, God’s choices for our lives are not
what we would expect, such was the case with
David being chosen as king. When has God
shown you His unexpected choice in your life?
• Psalm 23 – The Shepherd Lord – God
shepherds you through showing you the “green
pastures” of His grace when you could not find
it on your own. What “peaceful waters” has
gone shown to you in times of struggle?
• Ephesians 5:8-14 – The Light of God – God’s
light shows you what you do wrong and where
sin is so that you might try to avoid it,
understanding that God’s Law is there to show
you what Christ has done for you. When has
God’s light shown you your sin and His grace?
• John 9:1-41 – Seeing God’s Light – Jesus heals
a man born blind so that others who take sight
for granted might see their own blindness and
be given sight in Him. What blessings do you
take for granted that you could see more
clearly?
Law and Gospel:
• Law: We take so much for granted until it is
taken away or we see someone without. God’s
Law tells us that failing to see a blessing as a
blessing is worse than being not having a
blessing to begin with.
• Gospel: We are born in sin, which means we
are blind to God’s blessings from the day of our
birth unless God open our eyes to see them.
Thankfully, God opens our eyes through the
work of His Son who gave up all blessings to
give us the blessing of eternal life.
Living the Lectionary Ideas:
• Learn: Learn about some blessing that you
have that you take for granted, like how your
body works or how the earth spins.
• Do: Get up every morning this week and give
thanks to God for 10 blessings He has given to
you.
• Live: Practice the attitude of seeing everything
this week as if it were the first time you were
seeing it.
