BCI General Specifications

Design: BCI Library Technical Furniture

TF1.0 General

TF1.0.1 All finished surfaces shall be free of scratches, mars, dents or blemishes, and exhibit no flaking,
cracking or loss or adhesion.

TF1.0.2 The furniture shall have smooth finishes with no hazardous projections, sharp corners or detail, which
can be hazardous and cause personal injury or damage to clothing.

TF1.1 Specific

TF1.1.1 BCI Library Furniture Series shall be of a full panel design with structural back panels, which
provide maximum rigidity.

TF1.1.2 In addition to any warranty implied by fact or law, the Bidder expressly warrants all items to be new,
free from defects in design, materials and workmanship, and be fit and sufficient for intended purpose. Any
sample or model that is submitted shall create an express warranty that the whole of the goods shall conform to
the sample or model.

TF1.1.3 All steel components shall be rendered residue-free and covered with an electrostatically applied,
thermo-hardened, polyester powder paint that is 50 – 60 microns thick.

TF1.1.4 All steel components shall be available in eighteen standard colors, 160 non-standard colors and
custom color match by NCS color system.

TF1.1.5 All wood components shall be rendered smooth and without residue. All beech wood or other shall
be covered twice with an acid hardening lacquer that has no color pigmentation. All fiberboard surfaces
covered with enamel shall be prepared and covered twice with an opaque white or special color selected from
NCS Index Color Chart.

TF1.1.5 Finish test results shall be submitted for evaluation.

TF1.2 End and Intermediate Panels for Library Furniture Series

TF1.2.1 Beech wood end/intermediate panels shall be constructed from 23 mm (7/8" +) 3-ply particleboard,
which is beech wood veneered on both sides of the panel with solid 5/8" beech wood edge banding.

TF1.2.2 The beech wood shall be treated twice with a non-reflective, acid-hardened lacquer, which ensures
durability and the beauty of natural wood.

TF1.2.3 Beech wood end/intermediate panels shall be an integral part of the systems construction with little or
no deflection once the shelving is loaded and leveled.

TF1.2.4 All end and intermediate panels shall have steel sleeves for the connection of the wood back panels.

TF1.2.5 Each panel shall have two 3/4" diameter leveling guides that allow 1"+/- leveling capacity.
TF1.3 Back Panels for Library Furniture Series

TF1.3.1 Beech wood back panels shall be constructed from 19 mm (3/4") fiberboard, which is lacquered
opaque white enamel.

TF1.3.2 The fiberboard is prepared with an initial primer coat and finished with two coats of enamel that is
without grain and gloss of 30.

TF1.3.3 The fiberboard back panels shall be equipped with oval two-part PVC fitting for fastening the
end / intermediate panels securely to the back panels.

TF1.3.4 The back panels shall be available for two applications:


1. When using just the upper browse box portion, only the top panel is necessary.
2. When utilizing steel components in the lower portion of the browse box, both the upper panel and
lower panel is required.

TF1.4 Optional Bases for Browse Boxes Only

TF1.4.1 The bases shall be constructed from 16 mm (5/8" +) 3-ply particleboard, which is veneered with
beech wood on both sides.

TF1.4.2 When installed the base shall be recessed slightly from the front edge of the browse box.

TF1.4.3 Every base will include two wire supports that secure the base to the end / intermediate panels.

TF1.4.5 The base height is 3" in height.

TF1.5 Available Browse Box Models

TF1.5.1 All browse boxes shall be starter, adder, or stand-alone configurations.

TF1.5.2 Child height shall be available with a two-tiered top browsing compartment and optional steel storage
components beneath. (30"h x 37"w x 15-3/4"d)

TF1.5.3 Adult height shall be available with a three-tiered top browsing compartments and optional steel
storage components beneath. (37"+h x 37"w x 23-5/8"d and 37"+h x 46-7/8"w x 23-5/8"d)

TF1.5.4 The top compartments shall include a variety of adjustable dividers and adjustable bottom plates that
offer adjustments according to the media size.

TF1.6 Standard Shelves

TF1.6.1 Shelves shall be of #19 gauge steel plate. All shelves shall support book loads of 75 pounds per
square foot without deflection in excess of 3/16".

TF1.6.2 All shelf dimensions specified are actual and not nominal.

TF1.6.3 The front edge of the shelf shall be a box formation with a 1" high, tri-fold 90-degree bend. The rear
edge of all standard shelves shall be upturned 2", forming a built-in shelf backstop that has a 180-degree bend.

TF1.6.4 The upper edge of the shelf backstop shall be formed with a 3/8" high hemmed rail designed to
accept a sliding, chromium plated, 1/4" diameter wire book support consisting of a nylon runner assembly
and a 1/4" diameter chrome wire support.

TF1.6.5 All standard shelves shall be equipped with one sliding book supports.

TF1.6.6 Shelf ends shall be formed down 11/16" to engage shelf plate brackets.

TF1.6.7 A transparent acrylic label holder measuring 1" high x 9" wide shall be offered optionally as an
individual shelf sign.
TF1.7 Back Edge Book Support

TF1.7.1 Back edge book supports shall be produced with 1/4" diameter chrome wire, with an attached highly
durable, self-locking nylon fitting that connects to the 2" high shelf back lip.

TF1.7.2 Available dimensions shall be as follows:


6" high x 9" deep, 6" high x 12" deep, 10" high x 12" deep.

TF1.8 Front Edge Book Support

TF1.8.1 The front edge book support shall constructed from a powder coated steel band that measures 1/2",
with an attached highly durable, rubberized fitting that glides along the tri-bend front edge of any shelf.

TF1.8.2 Available dimensions shall be as follows:


12" high x 9" deep, and 12" high x 12" deep.

TF1.9 Right-Angle Book Support

TF1.9.1 The right-angle book support shall be constructed from a powder coated, 18-gauge steel plate bend at
90-degree angle.

TF1.9.2 Available dimensions shall be as follows:


6" high x 6" wide x 6" deep.

TF1.10 Mobile Divider Shelf

TF1.10.1 Mobile divider shelves shall be constructed vertically from 16-gauge steel and horizontally from
19-gauge steel plate.

TF1.10.2 The overall dimension s for the mobile divider shelf shall be 15-3/4" high x 36" wide x 15-3/4”
deep.

TF1.10.3 The mobile divider shelf shall consist of a 15-3/4" deep bottom shelf with back edge, side panel
brackets that include the appropriate mechanism that stabilizer the 7/8" diameter rod that supports the
dividers, and five 1" thick x 15-3/4" high x 15-3/4" deep dividers.

TF1.11 Divided Reference Shelves

TF1.11.1 Shelves shall be of #19 gauge steel plate. All shelves shall support book loads of 75 pounds per
square foot without deflection in excess of 3/16".

TF1.11.2 All shelf dimensions specified are actual and not nominal.

TF1.11.3 The front edge of the shelf shall be a box formation with a 1" dimension. The rear edge of all
standard shelves shall be upturned 6-13/16" forming a built-in shelf backstop.

TF1.11.4 The back edge shall have two slots, and the shelf surface shall have one slot to accommodate each
divider plate. The unit shall have nineteen positions available for the divider plates. The shelf shall have the
capability of being divided equally into two, three, four, five and eighteen compartments or as needed by
using a combination of the available slots.

TF1.11.5 Slots shall be punched 11/16" long x 5/64" wide, vertically on the back edge, and from front to back
on the shelf surface. The two rows of slots in the back edge shall be centered at 1-13/16" and 5-23/32" from
the shelf surface respectively. The slots in the shelf surface shall be centered a 1-3/16" from the front edge of
the shelf.

TF1.11.6 Each divider shall be the same specified depth as the shelf and shall be equipped with two bonnets
and one lug.
TF1.12 Paperback Shelves

TF1.12.1 Shelves shall be of #19 gauge steel plate.

TF1.12.2 All shelf dimensions specified are actual and not nominal.

TF1.12.3 The shelf shall be one piece, one tier accordion fold shelving, welded to integrated side panel and
bracket pieces.

TF1.12.4 Front and top edges shall be U-bent for stability. Front edge of shelf shall be a box formation with a
1" dimension.

TF1.12.5 Cross section of shelf shall slope towards the back at 79 degrees for a depth of 4-13/16", then bend
90 degrees for a height of 8", then bend 281 degrees for a depth of 1-9/16", and finally 90 degrees downward
for 5/16".

TF1.12.6 Shelf surface shall be welded to side panels.

TF1.12.7 Paperback shelves shall accommodate media display by cover or title.

TF1.13 Video Tape Shelves

TF1.13.1 Shelves shall be of #19 gauge steel plate.

TF1.13.2 All shelf dimensions specified are actual and not nominal.

TF1.13.3 The shelf shall be one piece, one tier accordion fold shelf, welded to integrated side panel and
bracket pieces.

TF1.13.4 Front and top edges shall be "U" bent for stability. The front edge of the shelf shall be a box
formation with a 1" height dimension.

TF1.13.5 Cross section of the shelf shall slope towards the back at 79 degrees for a depth of 4-13/16", then
bend 90-degrees for a height of 8", then bend 281 degrees for 1-9/16", and finally 90-degrees downward for
5/16".

TF1.13.6 Shelf surface shall be welded to side panels.

TF1.13.7 Videotape shelves shall accommodate media display by cover or title.

TF1.14 Compact Disc Shelves

TF1.14.1 Shelves shall be of #19 gauge steel plate.

TF1.14.2 All shelf dimensions specified are actual and not nominal.

TF1.14.3 The shelf shall be one piece, one tier accordion fold shelf, welded to integrated side panel and
bracket pieces and four removable dividers spaced equally on the shelf.

TF1.14.4 Front and top edges shall be "U" bent for stability. The front edge of the shelf shall be a box
formation with a 1" height dimension.

TF1.14.5 Cross section of the shelf shall slope towards the back at 80-degrees for a depth of 6", then bend 90-
degrees, for a height of 6", then bend 280 degrees for 1-9/16", and finally 90-degrees downward for 5/16".

TF1.14.6 Shelf surface shall be welded to side panels.

TF1.14.7 Compact Disc shelves shall accommodate media display by cover or title.
TF1.15 Cassette Shelves

TF1.15.1 Shelves shall be of #19 gauge steel plate.

TF1.15.2 All shelf dimensions specified are actual and not nominal.

TF1.15.3 The shelf shall be one piece, two-tier accordion fold shelf, welded to integrated side panel and
bracket pieces.

TF1.15.4 Front and top edge shall be "U" bent for stability. The front edge of the shelf shall be a box
formation with a 1" height dimension.

TF1.15.5 Cross section of the shelf shall slope towards the back at 75 degrees for a depth of 2-61/64", then
bend 90 degrees for a height of 4-3/8", then bend 90 degrees for a depth of 2-61/64", then bend 90 degrees for
a height of 4-3/8", then bend 285 degrees for a distance of 23/32", and finally 90 degrees downward for 5/16".

TF1.15.6 Shelf surface shall be welded to side panels.

TF1.15.7 Cassette shelves shall accommodate media display by cover or title.

TF1.16 Storage Cabinets

TF1.16.1 The steel cabinets for file or media tray storage shall be constructed vertically of 16-gauge steel
plate, and horizontally constructed of 19-gauge steel plate.

TF1.16.2 The cabinet should completely enclosed and including; a canopy top, a bottom shelf, a back
panel, an inserting door with lock, side panel brackets with appropriate mechanism allowing full insertion
of the door into the cabinet, and either one or two fully extendable pull-out frames for storage.

TF1.16.3 Fully extendable pullout frames for files shall allow for Pendaflex suspended files for letter or
legal sized papers.

TF1.16.4 Overall dimensions shall be 15-3/4" high x 36" wide x 15-3/4" deep.

TF1.17 Individual Recessed Work Stations

TF1.17.1 The individual recessed workstation shall include steel brackets and a work surface veneered
with laminate, forbo, or natural beech wood.

TF1.17.2 The steel brackets shall be produced from "L" bent, 16-gauge steel, and includes steel dowels
and wood screws that secure that work surface. The overall bracket depth is 15-3/4" deep.

TF1.17.3 The attached work surface shall be produced from 3/4", 3-ply particleboard, backer sheet, and
one of the selected finished noted above. All edges shall include a 1/8" solid wood edge banding.

TF1.17.4 The work surface shall fit within the browse box end and back panels, measuring approximately
36" wide x 23-5/8" deep.

TF1.18 Miscellaneous Steel Components

TF1.18.1 Any other standard steel components can be utilized and integrated without modification, even
if not mentioned above.

TF1.19 Steel/Wood Counter Trolley

TF1.19.1 The steel and wood counter trolley shall be produced from a combination of materials.

TF1.19.2 The framework shall be produced from a 1" diameter round tube, which wraps the wood panels,
and include built-in handles and add security to the caster connection. Steel preparation and
requirements as specified / Steel Shelving System.
TF1.19.3 The steel framework attaches to the wooden case by threaded steel sleeve inserts and threaded
1.1/4" countersunk bolts, which travel through a welded fitting / washer.

TF1.19.4 The casters shall connect to solid bearings, which are welded into place for the wheel
attachment. The casters are 5" high, prime quality; ball-bearing rubber coated wheels and are available
with
or without brakes.

TF1.19.5 Beech wood end panels shall be constructed from 23 mm (7/8" +) 3-ply particleboard, which is
beech wood veneered on both sides of the panel with solid 5/8" beech wood edge banding. As specified
above / Library Furniture Series and Wood and Steel Shelving System.

TF1.19.6 Beech wood back panels shall be constructed from 19-mm (3/4") fiberboard, which is lacquered
opaque enamel. As specified above / Library Furniture Series.

TF1.19.7 Any standard steel component or combination of components can be integrated. This book
truck includes (6) steel shelves with back edge. Any book support can be added. Steel components as
specified above / Library Furniture Series and Steel Shelving System.

TF1.19.8 Shelves shall be #19 gauge steel plate. All shelves shall support book loads of 75 pounds per
square foot without deflection in excess of 3/16".

TF1.19.9 All shelf dimensions are actual and not nominal.

TF1.19.10 The front edge of the shelf shall be a box formation with a 1" high, tri-fold 90-degree bend.
The rear edge of all standard shelves shall be upturned 2", forming a built-in shelf backstop that has a
180-degree bend.

TF1.19.11 The upper edge of the shelf backstop shall be formed with a 3/8" high hemmed rail designed to
accept a sliding, chromium plated, 1/4" diameter wire book support. All standard shelves can be equipped
with one sliding book support.

TF1.19.12 Shelf ends shall be formed down 11/16" to engage shelf plate brackets.

TF1.19.13 A transparent acrylic label holder measuring 1" high x 9" wide shall be offered optionally as
an individual shelf sign.

TF1.19.14 Back edge book supports shall be produced with 1/4" diameter chrome wire, with an attached
highly durable, self-locking nylon fitting that connects to the 2" high shelf back lip.

TF1.19.15 The back edge book support used with the book trolleys is 6" high x 9" deep.

TF1.20 Wood High Book Truck

TF1.20.1 The high book truck shall be produced from a combination of materials, and measures 40.5/32"
high x 34.5/8" wide x 19.11/16" deep.

TF1.20.2 The framework shall be produced from a 1" diameter round tube, which raps the wood panels,
and include built-in handles and add security to the caster connection. Steel preparation and
requirements as specified / Steel Shelving System.

TF1.20.3 The steel framework attaches to the wooden case by threaded steel sleeve inserts and threaded
1.1/4" countersunk bolts, which travel through a welded fitting / washer.

TF1.20.4 The casters shall connect to solid bearings, which are welded into place for the wheel
attachment. The casters are 5" high, prime quality; ball-bearing rubber coated wheels and are available
with or without brakes.

TF1.20.5 Beech wood end panels shall be constructed from 23 mm (7/8" +) 3-ply particleboard, which is
beech wood veneered on both sides of the panel with solid 5/8" beech wood edge banding. As specified
above / Library Furniture Series and Wood and Steel Shelving System.

TF1.20.6 Three fixed full depth shelves shall be equally spaced, and constructed from 23 mm (7/8" +) 3-
ply particleboard, which is beech wood veneered on both sides with a solid beech wood edge banding.

TF1.21 Front Runner Book Truck

TF1.21.1 The Front Runner Book Truck shall be produced from a combination of steel and wood
materials with the following overall dimensions: 44-3/32" high x 22-3/64" wide x 22-3/64" deep.

TF1.21.2 The framework shall be produced from a 1-1/4" diameter round tube, which raps the wood
panels, and include built-in handles and add security to the caster connection. Steel preparation and
requirements as specified / Steel Shelving System.

TF1.21.3 The casters shall connect to solid bearings, which are welded into place for the wheel
attachment. The casters are 5" high, prime quality; ball-bearing rubber coated wheels and are available
with or without brakes.

TF1.21.4 Beech wood side panels shall be constructed from 23 mm (7/8" +) 3-ply particleboard, which is
beech wood veneered on both sides of the panel with solid 5/8" beech wood edge banding. As specified
above / Library Furniture Series and Wood and Steel Shelving System.

TF1.21.5 The side panels shall be pre-drilled every 1-1/4" on center and sloped at 15 degrees for slanted
shelf adjustability.

TF1.21.6 Beech wood back panels shall be constructed from 19-mm (3/4") fiberboard, which is lacquered
opaque white enamel. As specified above / Library Furniture Series.

TF1.21.7 The adjustable beech wood shelves shall be constructed from 23 mm (7/8" +) 3-ply
particleboard, which is beech wood veneered on both sides of the panel with a solid 1/8" front banding.

TF1.21.8 Located on both sides of the shelves rotored reveals are centered with a depth of 3/8" + to
accept wire shelf supports.

TF1.22 Atlas Stand

TF1.22.1 The atlas stand shall be constructed from wood materials with the following dimensions:
49.9/16" x 37" x 24".

TF1.22.2 The top shall be sloped at an angle of 15 degrees with a stop edge to support books.

TF1.22.3 The top is available in linoleum or laminate with a beech wood radius edge measuring
1.1/8" x 2.3/8".

TF1.22.4 Five fully extendable pullout shelves, lacquered white with a 2" high front edge shall be
supplied.

TF1.22.5 The shelves shall be equally spaced 2" apart, and shall start 18.1/4" from the finished floor.

TF1.22.6 The atlas stand shall arrive on site completely assembled.

TF1.23 Display Stand

TF1.23.1 The display stand shall be constructed from wood materials with the following dimensions:
49.5/8" x 37.1/8" x 15.3/4".

TF1.23.2 The display stand shall have six sloped compartments with an acrylic front panel offering full
visibility of the magazine or newspaper displayed.

TF1.23.3 The compartment size shall be 6.1/4" high x 36" wide x 1.3/16" deep.

TF1.23.4 The end panels shall be angled at a 60-degree slope.

TF1.23.5 The bottom of the display stand shall be opened 18.1/4" above the finished floor.
TF1.24 Card Catalogs

TF1.24.1 The card catalog cabinet shall include five completely enclosed drawers per module.

TF1.24.2 The card catalog cabinet shall be constructed from solid beech wood.

TF1.24.3 The dimensions shall be as follows: 5.5/8" high x 36" wide x 18" deep.

TF1.24.4 Each drawer shall include a card divider, label, and clear acrylic label cover.

TF1.24.5 The pullout module shall include two pullout shelves for note taking and can be placed in any
position of the card catalog configuration.

TF1.24.6 The pullout module shall be constructed from solid beech wood.

TF1.24. Each pullout shelf shall be completely encased in the module measuring
2.1/4" high x 36" wide x 18" deep.

TF1.24.8 A steel frame with legs shall be available to support the card catalogs.

TF1.24.9 The steel frame shall be equipped with (1) leveling guide per leg, and shall be constructed from
a square 1.1/8" x 1.1/8" cold-rolled steel tube.

TF1.24.10 The total dimensions for the steel frame shall be 26.9/16" high x 36" wide x 17" deep.

TF1.25 Wood Counter Book Truck

TF1.25.1 The high book truck shall be produced from a combination of materials, and measures 34.5/8"
high x 34.5/8" wide x 19.11/16" deep.

TF1.25.2 The framework shall be produced from a 1" diameter round tube, which raps the wood panels,
and include built-in handles and add security to the caster connection. Steel preparation and
requirements as specified / Steel Shelving System.

TF1.25.3 The steel framework attaches to the wooden case by threaded steel sleeve inserts and threaded
1.1/4" countersunk bolts, which travel through a welded fitting / washer.

TF1.25.4 The casters shall connect to solid bearings, which are welded into place for the wheel
attachment. The casters are 5" high, prime quality; ball-bearing rubber coated wheels and are available

ply particleboard, which is beech wood veneered on both sides with a solid beech wood edge banding.

TF1.26 Dictionary Stand

TF1.22.1 The dictionary stand shall be constructed from wood materials with the following dimensions
49.9/16" high x 24" wide x 24" deep.

TF1.22.2 The top shall be sloped at an angle of 15 degrees with a stop edge to support books.

TF1.22.3 The top is available in linoleum or laminate with a beech wood radius edge measuring
1.1/8" x 2.3/8".

TF1.22.4 Two fixed wood shelves with back edge are supplied for storage below the sloped top.

TF1.22.5 The shelves shall be equally spaced apart, and shall start 18.1/4" from the finished floor.

TF1.22.6 The dictionary stand shall arrive on site completely assembled.
