ASSIGNMENT-01

1. One litre of crude oil weighs 9.6N. Calculate its specific weight, density and
specific gravity.
2. Determine the intensity of shear of an oil having viscosity 1.2 poise and is used
for lubrication in the clearance between a 10cm diameter shaft and its journal
bearing. The clearance is 1mm and shaft rotates at 200 r.p.m.
3. An oil of viscosity 5 poise is used for lubrication between a shaft and sleeve. The
diameter of shaft is 0.5m and rotates at 200 r.p.m. Calculate the power lost in oil
for a sleeve length of 100mm. The thickness of oil film is 1mm.
4. Determine the bulk,s modulus of elasticity of a fluid which is compressed in a
cylinder from a volume of 0.009m3 at 70N/cm2 pressure to a volume of
0.0085m3 at 270N/cm2 pressure.
5. Find the surface tension in the soap bubble of 30mm diameter when the inside
pressure is 1.962N/cm2 above atmosphere.
6. Find capillary rise in the glass tube used for measuring water level is not to
exceed 0.5mm. Determine its minimum size, given that surface tension for water
in contact with air is 0.07112N/m.
7. A shaft of diameter 120mmis rotating inside a journal bearing of diameter 122mm
at a speed of 360 r.p.m. The space between shaft and bearing is filled with a
lubricating oil of viscosity 6poise. Find the power absorbed in oil if the length of
bearing is 100mm.

1. A hydraulic press has a ram of 30cm diameter and a plunger of dia 5cm. find the
weight lifted by the hydraulic press when the force applied at the plunger in 400
N.
2. Calculate the presume due to a column of 0.4m of (a) water
(b) an oil of sp. Gr. 0.9 (c) Hg of sp. Gr. 13.6
3. An open tank contains water upto a depth of 1.5m and above it an oil of sp. Gr.
0.8 for a Depth of 2m. Find the presume intensity.
(1) at the interface of two liquids (2) at the bottom of the tank
4. Determine the gauge and atmospheric pressure at a point which is 2m below the
free surface of water. Take atmospheric pressure as 10.1043N/cm2.
5. A rectangular sluice gate is situated on the vertical wall of the lock. The vertical
side of sluice is 6m in length and depth of centroid of area is 8m below the water
surface. Prove that the depth of center of pressure is given by 8.475m.
6. The pressure at the center of the pipe of diameter 3m is 29.43N/cm2. The pipe
contains oil of specific gravity 0.87 and is fitted with a gate valve. Find the force
exerted by the oil on the gate and position of center of pressure.
7. A circular plate of 3m diameter is immersed in water in such a way that the plane
of the plate makes an angle of 60 degree with the free surface of the water.
Determine the total pressure and position of center of pressure when the upper
edge of the plate is 2m below the free water surface.
8. Find the horizontal and vertical components of the total force acting on the curved
surface AB, which is in the form of a quadrant of a circle of radius 2m. Take the
width of the gate as 2m.

Q. No-1: (a) Define viscosity and explain its variation with temperature for liquids and
gases. (3)
(b) State and prove Pascal,s law of pressure. (4.5)
Q. No-2: A dash pot 10 cm diameter and 12.5 cm long slides vertically down in a
10.05cm diameter cylinder. The oil filling the annular space has a viscosity of
0.80 poise. Find the speed with which the piston slides down if the load on the
piston is 10N. (7.5)
Q. No-3: The diameters of a small piston and a large piston of a cylindrical jack are 3cm
and 10 cm respectively. A force of 80 N is applied on the small piston. Find the
load lifted by the large piston when;
(a) The pistons are at the same level
(b) Small piston is 40 cm above the large piston.
Take density of the liquid in the jack as 1000kg/m3 (7.5)
Q. No-4: A vertical opening 3m diameter, in a vertical slide of a tank is closed by a disc
of 3m diameter which can rotate about a horizontal diameter, calculate;
(a) Force on the disc
(b) Torque required to maintain the disc in equilbrium in the
vertical position when the head of the water above the
horizontal diameter is 4m. (7.5)
Q.No-5: A block of wood of specific gravity 0.7 floats in water. Determine the
metacentric height of the block if its size is 2mx1mx0.8m. (7.5)

1. A 40 cm diameter pipe, conveying water, branches into two pipes of diameters


30cm and 20 cm respectively. If the average velocity in the 40 cm diameter pipe
is 3m/s. find the discharge in this pipe. Also determine the velocity in 20 cm pipe
if the average velocity in 30cm diameter pipe is 2m/s.
2. The following cases represent the two velocity components, determine the third
component of velocity such that they satisfy the continuity equation;
i) u=4x2
