INTRODUCTION
Welcome to our fourth in the series of PADERI “Run with the
Horses” annual conferences. This is a series of conferences for
pastors and Christian leaders in pastoral ministry. The theme this
year calls us to self-attention in the Lord as we reflect on pastoral
development and renewal in Malaysia.
CONFERENCE PLENARY SESSIONS
In his first pastoral letter to Timothy, Paul is giving his fellow-worker
many practical instructions. In our sessions we would like to focus
our attention on the following two instructions and apply them
to our life and ministry: “Discipline yourself for the purpose of
Godliness.” (I Timothy 4 : 7 NASV) and “Pay close attention to
yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things.” (I Timothy
4 : 16). Our conference speaker Mr Koichi Ohtawa from Japan will
lead us in four sessions.
Session I : Practice of Holistic Self-Care
The first step of every caring ministry is to pay close attention to
what you want to care for. We would like to pay close attention
to our physical, mental/emotional and spiritual states and needs.
Self-care is not something which should be practiced by ourselves
alone. If it is practiced in the context of companionship it can be
more effective and sustainable.
Session II : Knowing Ourselves (I)
We know that it is very important to know ourselves for our personal
and spiritual growth and maturity. However, this knowledge is
one of the most difficult knowledge to attain. We would like to
learn how to grow in self-awareness through reflecting on our life-
experience and life-journey.
Session III : Knowing Ourselves (II)
In our life and ministry various motivations and drivers are operating
in our heart. We are conscious of some of them but others could be
hidden under our consciousness. In the process towards freedom
which is essential for our love and service to God and people, the
first step is to know and acknowledge our motivations and inner
drives.
Session IV : Practice of Self-Discipline
Eugene Peterson paraphrased the verse I Timothy 4 : 7 “Exercise
daily in God”. We would like to identify our regular exercises in all
areas of our daily life and try to find ways to put them in proper
perspective of godliness. For this we would like to learn from
Brother Lawrence (The Practice of the presence of God) and the
tradition of Prayer of Examen.
PLENARY SPEAKERS’ PROFILES
MR. KOICHI OHTAWA
Ohtawa-san was born in 1942
in Tokyo. He is the eldest son of
staunch Buddhist parents. He
came to know Christ through a
few high school friends in 1960.
He studied system engineering
but upon graduation he joined the staff of KGK (the Japanese
equivalent of the Fellowship of Evangelical Students). From 1969-
72 he was in Singapore studying at the Discipleship Training
Centre.
Ohtawa returned to serve in KGK and became the General
Secretary till 1982. Then from 1982 till 2002, he served as the
Regional Secretary for IFES East Asia and also as an Associate
General Secretary of IFES. He has visited Malaysia many times and
has the privilege of speaking to many Malaysian tertiary students
and graduates.
He has served on the pastoral team of the Japanese Christian
Fellowship in Singapore and the OMF Chapel of Adoration in
Chiba, Japan for 15 years. Presently, he is a director of CLSK (the
Fellowship for Holistic Growth and Maturity) and also as a lecturer
at the Bokkai Juku (School for Continuous Learning for Pastors) in
Tokyo.
Ohtawa is married to Shioko with three grown-up sons. One of
them was working till recently in Papar, Sabah for a Christian NGO
for children in need. Ohtawa and Shioko are worshiping at Gakuen
Kirisuto Kyokai, one of the Wesleyan Churches in Japan.
JOURNEYING TOGETHER – SHARING IN SMALL
GROUPS
We are all pilgrims on the same faith journey in Christ. Nothing
like sharing our common faith stories as tonic to our souls,
when we discover our shared joy, vulnerabilities and struggles.
Therefore, we seek to do things differently in this PADERI
Conference. The PADERI team members will facilitate small
groups where there are opportunities for all to participate, to
affirm and to encourage one another.
PERSONAL SESSIONS :
Conference participants may choose to do the following :
(a) self-reflection (on your own) OR
(b) Time with a senior Christian leader – please ask for schedule
of who is available
Participants choosing this option will not join the sharing in
small groups.

PADERI which stands for Pastoral Development and Renewal Initiative comprises a group of pastors, lay leaders and
theologians of various denominations who are concerned for the personal spiritual formation and the development of pastors
and lay leaders in the Church in Malaysia. This would entail the holistic development of the pastors and church leaders in their
character, integrity, identity, role and relevance.
