the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of
all who have died.” (1 Corinthians 15:20

A man and his wife are standing in the
“seasonal isle” at the store looking at Easter
items. They are surrounded by bunnies,
baskets, candy and balloons. Their eyes
glisten with joy as they consider all the
wonderful choices. The man reaches for a
greeting card on the shelf in front of him. He
reads it, suddenly holds it up, stares at his
wife and loudly declares with obvious
frustration, “Those darn Christians are taking
over everything. Now they even want
Easter!”
In truth, Christians aren’t trying to take
over Easter. It is distinctively Christian.
While we will celebrate with bunnies,
baskets, candy and balloons as many will do,
our only real priority is to celebrate Jesus’
resurrection from the dead. The resurrection
is the single most important event in human
history. There are at least three reasons why
that Christ has been raised.
The Resurrection is Historically
Reliable
Following Jesus requires faith but not
blind faith. Christians believe the claims of
Christ and the scriptures because they are
reliable. The resurrection is not some
abstract spiritual concept or well-meaning
fairy tale. Jesus actually rose from the dead.

follows: ‘Those who handed down the
[Apostles] Creed showed great wisdom in
emphasizing the actual date at which these
things happened, so that there might be no
chance of any uncertainty or vagueness of
upsetting the stability of the tradition.’ The
reference to Pilate firmly anchors the creed
to history. It affirms that we are dealing with
an event -- the crucifixion of Jesus Christ --
that actually happened in history.” (I
Believe: Exploring the Apostles’ Creed, p.
55 by Alister McGrath). Over the centuries
numerous theories have been offered to
explain away the empty tomb, yet each
theory has been met with evidence
supporting the Bible’s claim. I believe an
honest open-minded study of the evidence
affirms the resurrection.
The Resurrection is Theologically
Essential
“Paul E. Little says, ‘Both friends and
enemies of the Christian faith have
recognized the resurrection of Christ as the
foundation stone of the faith.’ Phillip Schaff
calls the Resurrection ‘a test question on
which depends the truth or falsehood of the
Christian religion. It is either the greatest
miracle or the greatest delusion which
history records.’”
Why the fuss? What’s so theologically
essential about the resurrection? In 1
Corinthians 15:14-19 the Apostle Paul
considers the significance of the
resurrection. If there is no resurrection, he
says, our faith is futile, we are still in our
sins, those who have died in Christ have
perished and we should be pitied because we
have no eternal hope. That’s why, “every
sermon preached by every Christian in the
New Testament centers on the resurrection.”
(Handbook of Christian Apologetics, 176 by
Peter Kreeft and Ronald K. Tacelli) Jesus’
resurrection fulfills Old Testament prophesy,
affirms his deity, establishes his Lordship
and declares eternal victory over the powers

of sin and death.
The Resurrection is Practically
Relevant
Finally, the resurrection is relevant for our
lives. It gives us hope for eternal life. For
the Christian, hope is a distinctive word. It
means to wait with confidence. Christ
defeated death and through Him we have
victory, too. Our shepherd leads us through
the Valley of the Shadow of Death into Life.
The resurrection gives us faith. Jesus was
raised from the dead. Matthew’s words
come to mind, “With man, this is impossible.
But with God, all things are possible.”
(Matthew 19:26). Perhaps you’re facing a
seemingly impossible situation. I pray you
find a way to trust him. He is faithful.
The resurrection supplies us strength.
The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead
dwells within every believer (Romans 8:11).
Wow! The Spirit of Almighty God lives in
you. That’s why Paul declares, “I can do all
things through him who gives me strength.”
(Philippians 4:13) I pray you experience
God’s presence and power this Easter.
I am looking forward to celebrating
Easter with you -- bunnies, baskets and
candy. Yet above all, RESURRECTION!

The Servant’s Heart: Rent-a-Youth and Renovations

I fancy myself a hard worker when there isn’t
much work to be done. I sweat blood every
Missions Trip (take a look at my sneakers and my
baseball cap, they tell a story in themselves). I err
on the side of getting stuff done rather than
postponing it, but this month of Rent-a-Youth has
taught me otherwise.
In a matter of three weeks, we have
disassembled an office, painted it and reassembled
it in 5 hours, pruned hedges, edged grass and flower
beds, moved mulch, torn down playhouses and
erected new ones in their place.
This past weekend found the entire church in
search of mops, brooms, hammers, rags and their
nastiest working clothes with which they would battle

ANNIVERSARY Our teachers in March
have been by Carol Weberg “Life of Fannie
Crosby,” Estelle Holley “Who Loves
You?,” Pat Whiteley “Breakfast on the
Beach,” and Patsy Thompson “John 3:16.”
Thank you all for a great job. We enjoyed
Jamie Nelson bringing the children to sing
our devotion one Sunday. Nicholas and
Lucas Lantz read scripture and did a skit
about love and forgiveness. Our devotions
this month were brought by Leighton
Durham, Kathryn and Mike Brooks, and
Roger Simpson and were very moving. We
are saddened by the death of one of our
members, Barbara Bolin. She will be
missed. Also rememeber to pray for Dick
Phillips, Mary Margaret Roberson and
former member, Tom Young.
CHALLENGE On March 20, Scott Satre
taught a lesson on March 20 about praying
the Scriptures. I John 5:14-15 tells us that
if we ask anything of God according to His
will, He will hear us, and that we have the
petitions that we have asked of Him. We
find God’s will in the Scriptures. There are
a lot of prayers in the Bible and if Jesus
prayed it, it must be His will. We can also

pray God’s promises, many of which are
conditional. A key to praying God’s Word is
to memorize Bible verses and meditate on
them. Dennis Jeter led the class in prayer.
On March 27, Ray Truesdell presented a
lesson about giving thanks and God’s grace.
In life we find ourselves questioning whether
we are able to do things we are called upon
to do. In our own power we can’t; but with
God’s grace, we find we can do all things.
God takes the foolish and weak and works
through them by His mighty power. God is
faithful and will sustain us to the end. It is
beautiful to see how God delivers us from our
weaknesses. Our boasting is in the Lord--it’s
not about us. We need to make reading God’s
Word our priority. Dennis Jeter led us in prayer.

Griffin led the class in singing. Mary Miller
gave the prayer. Shirley Jackson taught a
good lesson on encouragement. On March

on her job on a school bus by an unhappy
student. She was not hurt, just scared.
LaVerne’s devotion was titled “Top Ten
Predictions For 2011 -- God in All of Them.”
Frank followed with his wonderful lesson from
the Book of Acts. We were saddened by the
death of one of our members, Ed Brown.

Australia Ministry Trip
The time has flown by! Australia was great!
It took a bit longer to get there than expected
as all the flights to Sydney were full, so I ended
up going via Brisbane. I saw the floods from
the air -- huge areas under water -- and that
was before the big storm. The weather was
much better in Sydney, where I stayed with
Brian and Elizabeth Rensford. Brian has been
to Zimbabwe many times and been in my
home. I ministered in his church January 16.

the next few days. Lyn and I will be teaching
in Ghana and Liberia toward the end of this

with cancer. He has been on chemotherapy
and is doing very well -- better than the doc-
tors expected. With God, that is what we ex-
pect. “Who has believed the report of the Lord!”
Back to South Africa for a few days and
then home again. We arrived an hour early at
OR Tambo Airport in Joburg and had to wake
my daughter Hannah at 4:30 am to come and
get me at the airport. Home group in Cootamundra
Thank you Lord for a safe journey and a
wonderful time.
West Africa Ministry Trip
I plan to fly to Johannesburg March 15, get
yellow fever vaccination on the 16th then
travel with Alison Papenfus to Accra, Ghana
on the 19th where we will meet with Lyn
Keating and fly on to Kumasi to teach for five
days. We plan to return to Accra on the 26th,
minister there on the 27th, go to Monrovia on
the 28th, teach for three days and travel back
to Joberg for another weekend of teaching. Sydney opera house from ferry

Imagine No Malaria

On March 19th your TSUMC campus
was filled with healthy young men enjoying
the game of basketball. They played to
support efforts to end Malaria on the other
side of the globe. As I looked at these
young men with promise, what must mothers
in other parts of the world think when their
young men of promise die long before their
time to a disease that can be eradicated.
How senseless it seems to me that with all
the problems of the world we struggle to fix,
this is one that has a solutions that is
attainable. Sometimes I struggle with the
limitations I think I have to really making a
difference in the world. Was this event a
success? The goal I was after was to raise as
much money to send to Imagine No Malaria
as possible. This experience gave me a
concrete way to see what a little planning
and time can do. If you look at dollars and
cents we were able to raise $842 in mos-
quito nets that protect 87 people from
malaria. Of course I wish that amount could
be multiplied like the loaves and fishes.
