The most famous instance prior to Toyota was that of Audi in the
mid-1980s. The claim then was that Audis were prone to surging
at start-up (at that time, Audi did not use a drive-by-wire sys-
tem). Several children were killed when their parents or grand-
parents started an Audi and the vehicle surged forward. There
were media exposés, including a particularly notorious one by
60 Minutes that used compressed air to manipulate the trans-
mission of an Audi to cause the gas pedal to operate indepen-

All of these issues aside, given that the NHTSA database did
include thousands of complaints about Toyota and acceleration
issues (2,290 between 2000 and 2009, according to a count by
National Public Radio4), it’s worth taking a deeper look to see if
there was plausible evidence to suspect a problem in Toyota ve-
hicles. The complaints themselves make compelling and fright-
ening reading, and they certainly sound convincing.

shorter time spans, sometimes Ford was the leader in sudden ac-
celeration complaints. On an annual basis, Volkswagen had the
most SUA complaints per 100,000 vehicles in 7 out of 10 years
between 2000 and 2009.5 There are two conclusions to draw
from these figures: first, the complaint database does not clearly
establish Toyota as an outlier in terms of SUA, and second, SUA
claims are regularly made about all manufacturers, but in all cases
only as a very small percentage of vehicles on the road.

One has to question any story that alleges that the brakes
couldn’t slow an accelerating vehicle. Edward Niedermeyer
thinks there is a much likelier explanation for such reports than
simultaneous multiple system failure: “As far as I’m concerned,
it’s proof positive that the driver was pressing the gas, not the
brakes.” Many other drivers reporting unintended acceleration
also claimed that they had shifted into neutral or reverse and/or
pulled the parking brake without effect. Those reports would re-
quire four separate systems, one of them entirely mechanical (the
parking brake), to fail simultaneously.

Brakes will always slow a vehicle no matter what position the throttle is in and
will almost always be able to bring the vehicle to a stop in a reasonable distance.
The only exception is in the case of a wide-open throttle, NASA noted, as in
pedal entrapment, if the driver repeatedly pumps the brakes rather than apply-
ing steady pressure. In that case, the brake vacuum assist system can fail, limit-
