(This is an excerpt from a thank you sent to Tim Odle from the Head Baseball Coach at North Central Universi-
ty. The team played two double headers on the GMG High School Field recently)

Thank you again so much for Chapel’s hospitality and to everyone in the community who embraced us and
made us feel welcome and special! It was a neat trip for us all and I am very glad we did it. I have high ex-
pectations for this group, even though we lost our game, there are things we can correct and will correct as the
season goes on. We would be much worse off if we weren't able to play this weekend and learn all the things
we did.

We will play in Grinnell at the high school field on Friday starting at 4 pm and Noon at the College field on
Saturday this week against Lawrence University from Appleton, Wisconsin. Lawrence's coach is from Grinnell
originally and he knew exactly where Green Mountain was when I talked to him!

Thanks again for all you did to make this trip happen and a great experience! Hope to maybe see you this
weekend.

Take care,
Tim Beasley

UMW NEWS
Chapel UMW met Thursday, March 3, at 1:30 p.m. at the church. Kathryn Burt opened the afternoon program by inviting the group
to sing, “This Little Light of Mine.” She reminded us that Jesus came as a servant, and when asked what the greatest commandment was, he
answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as
yourself. “ She also told how the prophet Isaiah told we should care for those who need our care, including widows and orphans. An organi-
zation that cares for those in need is Hospice. Kathryn then introduced Rhonda Miller from Iowa River Hospice, who gave the program. Rhon-
da shared the history of Iowa River Hospice, how the organization is staffed, and the levels of care available at the Hospice Home. She told
of their newest project, “Living Legacies,” which assists hospice patients to tell their life stories for their families. They are assisted by MCC
and private donations in producing these DVD’s. Rhonda closed by sharing the newsletter from Iowa River Hospice and encouraging anyone
to become involved as a volunteer.
President Kathryn Burt called the meeting to order at 2:45 p.m. Eleven members answered roll call by telling about something that
had been invented during their lifetime. The secretary’s minutes from the December meeting were read and approved with the correction that
the treasurer’s report was from November, rather than October as stated. Correspondence was read from Ron and Lois Groth, with thanks for
the 50th wedding anniversary gift; a thank you from Donna Lynch for the Christmas amaryllis, and a thank you from the Zeal Bessman family
for assisting with the meal following Zeal’s funeral.
Shirley Svendsen gave the treasurer’s report. Income included regular offering from the month of December and the serving of the
Zeal Bessman funeral meal. February income came from the serving of funeral meals for Doris Svendsen, Vonnie Lynch, and Dorothy Lynch.
The treasurer’s report was approved. A bill was presented by Janice Collins for a rose bowl in honor of Brooklyn Smith, daughter of Ben and
Shauna Smith. Motion by Cindy Ormston, seconded by Myrene Appelgate to pay the bill. Motion carried. Discussion of possible UMW pro-
jects ensued. Motion by Janice Collins, second by Jo Svendsen, to donate $100 to Iowa River Hospice for their Living Legacies project. Motion
carried. Motion by Susan Beichley, second by Cindy Ormston to donate $100 to the Stork’s Nest for their March diaper drive. Motion car-
ried. Discussion of the December challenge from our District Shepherdess regarding a donation to Bidwell Riverside followed. Motion by Lois
Groth, second by Janice Collins to send $100 to the district treasurer for equal distribution to Bidwell Riverside, Shesler Hall, Hawthorn Hill,
and School of Christian Mission. Motion carried.

Committee reports:
• Janice reported for the cards and flowers committee.
Old business:
• None
New business:
• The ladies of the Iowa River Brethren Church have invited us to their luncheon on Monday, March 21, at 11:30 a.m. Deb Nuss will give the
program. Reservations need to be made to Sharon Somers by March 18. Kathryn Burt will contact Sharon with the number attending.
• Chapel’s Spring Breakfast will be Saturday, April 16, with the program, “More Than a Cross,” by Janet Schildroth.
Officer Reports:
• Lois Groth gave the Social Action Report on gambling. Lois shared myths and facts about gambling and its effect on families and society.
She encouraged us to stay informed about our state legislature, as they are considering legalizing internet gambling in Iowa.

Kathryn distributed district newsletter information to the officers. Church activities in March include the Truth Project on Sunday eve-
nings and Lenten Studies during Sunday School, beginning March 6. Prayer requests were received. Kathryn closed with prayer. A delicious
dessert luncheon was served by Lois Groth and Carolyn Kloster on tables decorated in a St. Patrick’s Day theme.
