Volunteer and Literacy Programmer
Term 28 hour/week Position

KNH is seeking a highly organized, resourceful and experienced individual who can provide volunteer program
coordination and literacy program facilitation.

Key Areas of Responsibility 14 hours/week: Volunteer Programmer
o Develop and maintain policies and systems for effective volunteer management
o Coordinate and facilitate Youth Volunteer Skills Training in the Fall & Winter.
o Liaise with staff in the development of volunteer position descriptions as required
o Promote the involvement of volunteers among KNH staff
o Respond to requests with regard to volunteerism
o Plan and organize volunteer recognition events
o Conduct screening interviews with potential volunteers and their supervisor
o Provide basic orientation and on-going support to all volunteers
o Communicate with volunteers to ensure a positive experience for both volunteer and KNH
o Assist supervisors in establishing and conducting regular volunteer performance reviews including exit
interviews
o Follow and adapt logic model and monitoring tool for this initiative.
o Design and implement promotional materials for the Volunteer Program
o Participate in Autumn Fair planning committee and event (as required).
o Develop a program that encourages intergenerational and cross program volunteer opportunities.
o Complete reporting as required by funder and Kits House

Key Areas of Responsibility 14 hours/week: Literacy Programmer


o Manage and oversee the Welcoming Neighbours Program
o Manage a one part-time Community Program worker
o Develop and implement promotional materials
o Work with local task force and with community literacy partners to implement the plan for literacy
specific to Kits, West Point Grey, Arbutus Ridge and UBC;
o Organize literacy celebration for Fall 2011.
o Assist in processes that will result in program development, communications and partnership
development
o Attend team meetings and participate in a team approach to service delivery.
o Provide linguistic and cultural interpretation as required.
o Actively participate in house wide events.
o Provide guidance to staff and volunteers of the program(s) in interpreting relevant NH policies &
procedures
o Complete reporting as required by funders and Kits House

Qualifications Required
o Diploma or bachelors degree in a related field or combination of experience & education
o One year recent related experience
o Experience supporting vulnerable populations
o Strong ability to deal with diverse populations with an empathetic, genuine and easy nature
o Past experience incorporating community development practices into your work
o Experience with logic models and monitoring frameworks
o Knowledge of the Neighbourhood House Model of Service Delivery and/or willingness to learn
o Experience working from a community development perspective
o Excellent communication skills both verbal & written with excellent command of the English language
o Able to interact with persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
o Skilled at negotiating, exchanging ideas, opinions and information with others and in working as a
collaborative member of a diverse team
o Strong organizational skills with attention to details and follow through and the ability to handle multiple
priorities
o Ability to speak a second an asset
Job Details
Full time term position – May 1st 2011- April 31st 2012- with possibility of extension.
17.50 – comprehensive benefit package
