Dear Applicant,

Thank you for responding to our job advertisement for an Electronics Engineer – our Job 2011-01.
You appear to have many of the required qualities as we interpret your resume and/or cover letter, but we want to
understand your qualifications fully. We would appreciate it if you could supply us with more details about your
background and experience – particularly in regards to the required items. Could you please describe how your
background and experience relates to each of the areas we list on the following page? Your answers can be brief but
completeness would be better for your application. Specific examples help also. If you do not have any applicable
experience in a particular area, please say so.
We will be contacting the candidates who appear to be the best fits within a few days after we receive their
responses. Thank you in advance for the time you will be spending on this task.

Al Bruns
Plexon Inc
Electronics Engineer
Job 2011-01

Your Name: Setiawan Soekamtoputra Today’s Date: April 6, 2011

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work with internal customers to develop specifications for products and plans for development,
verification, and integration of the products.

Working on a short-term project as Visual Basic programmer gave me this

experience. Listening what they want to have in their software system to
which I was assigned, conducting frequent communication as the project
progresses, and installing the software to their system are the experience
that I earned from the project.

• Design, implement, and verify analog and digital electronic products and systems using modern EDA tools.

I have experience in designing schematic capture and bringing the design

into fabrication by doing PCB layout using Altium Designer. Although I
haven’t used this tool for simulation, Altium Designer features circuit
simulation for verification. Electronic models can be verified/simulated by
using Matlab SimElectronics as well.

• Resolve mechanical design issues as they arise.

I could perhaps solve simple mechanical design but have no experience on

this.

• Keep abreast of developments in the electronics engineering field as they relate to Plexon products and
customers.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• For digital products and systems:
o Electronic principles including digital and microprocessor circuit concepts and interfacing.

Most of my undergraduate and master degree program in electrical and

computer engineering talks about digital circuits, especially CMOS and
logic design. I have hands-on experience in implementing or using
micro-controllers: TI’s eZ430 and ATMEL 89S51. Interfacing experience I
have encountered includes A/D conversion (TI’s eZ430) and parallel and
serial (RS-232) with ATMEL 89S51.

o Researching, developing, designing and verifying the products and systems.

This experience is best explained back in my undergraduate final project

which is integrated control and attendance system prototype. I
proposed this idea to my advisor and implemented the idea into finished
working prototype. It contains four microcontrollers, four keypads, one
magnetic card reader, and one PC, and communication between PC and
microcontroller was done via serial interface. I made my custom PCBs as
well. So, I have done complete cycle from idea to prototype product.

o Using computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment such as ORCAD and
PADS PCB to perform engineering tasks.

I have used Altium Designer to build all of my PCB-related projects,

which includes drawing schematic, choosing footprints for through-
hole or surface-mount components, designing PCB layout, generating
engineering files necessary such as gerber files for fabricator to
manufacture the PCBs.

• Xilinx FPGA design in VHDL.

I have experience with FPGA when I did independent study to run Solaris
under Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA, not much of experience but this is still valuable
experience dealing with Xilinx FPGA. I also did little experiment to control
7-segment display on my own ALTERA CYCLONE II development kit using
Verilog.

• DSP microprocessor programming and system design.

I would like to have this experience in the future.

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical or electronics engineering (BEE).

I have bachelor degree in electrical engineering and master degree in

electrical and computer engineering. I have completed both with above
3.5/4.0 GPA.

DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE (Note that these are desired, NOT
required. Please respond even if you don’t have any of these skills.):
• For analog and mixed signal products and systems:
o Electronic principles including analog and mixed signal circuit concepts and interfacing.

On my energy harvesting prototype project, I experienced dealing

with analog circuits, including battery charging circuit to store the
energy. Another experience in analog circuit is designing 5V and 12
V DC from 220 V AC and controlling 12 V relay with digital signal.
Interface from analog to digital signal requires regulator for steady
output and A/D converter for processing analog signals.

o Researching, developing, designing and verifying the products and systems.

This experience is best explained back in my undergraduate final

project which is integrated control and attendance system prototype.
I proposed this idea to my advisor and implemented the idea into
finished working prototype. It contains four microcontrollers, four
keypads, one magnetic card reader, and one PC, and communication
between PC and microcontroller was done via serial interface. I made
my custom PCBs as well. So, I have done complete cycle from idea to
prototype product.

o Shielding and grounding techniques for sensitive analog circuitry and scientific instruments.

I have no experience on this but shielding and grounding, based on

my understanding, are used to limit or eliminate cross-talk, internal
and external interference, and impedance.

o Using computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment such as ORCAD and
PADS PCB to perform engineering tasks.

I have used Altium Designer to build all of my PCB-related projects,

which includes drawing schematic, choosing footprints for through-
hole or surface-mount components, designing PCB layout, generating
engineering files necessary such as gerber files for fabricator to
manufacture the PCBs.

• Windows PC related skills:

o PCI bus operation and design at the interface level.

I have experience in serial interface, but not PCI.

o Software driver creation.

No experience

o Software test frameworks for hardware and/or firmware designs.

I tested my integrated control and attendance system prototype

using Visual Basic programming (and also assembly language on
microcontroller).

o C and C++ programming and Windows driver creation using Visual Studio.

I have C++ experience when I implemented QR matrix factorization

under Linux platform.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills.

Most of my MBA program classes had team-based project, either to

examine and solve case studies or to do business simulation project. Based
on my experience, key success in team work is communication and to know
team members’ abilities so that we can assign the right task to them. I
also serve in a religious community as a member of committee and my
tasks include finding volunteers to participate and prepare booklets.
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English.

As English is my second language, I have been learning to have better and better verbal and written
skills in English. This includes reading magazines and watching news and movies.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

I have been using Ms. Office since high school.

OTHER:

• Full time exempt position.

I am available to work full time.

• We are located in Dallas, Texas, USA. Limited relocation assistance may be available.
I am open to relocation. Relocation assistance would be nice, if any.

• No visa sponsorship.
I have authorization to work without sponsorship up to 27 months, starting
February 1, 2011.
