Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Public School, Vadodara, has been ranked No.1 in Vadodara, No.17
among the top schools in Western Region and No.59 on all India basis, according to a survey
conducted by Education World (September 2008 issue), in respect of India’s 250 most respected
schools in 15 cities countrywide with reference to 12 parameters of balanced education
provision. India’s most respected schools survey is conducted for Education World by the
Delhi- based market research & opinion polls agency Cfore (Centre for forecasting & research)
which specialises in appraisal of educational and other institutions at the national level. The
respondents were a carefully chosen mix of parents, principals, teachers and educationists in 15
cities across India.
The evaluation parameters were academic reputation, co-curricular education, competence of
faculty, sports education, individual attention to students, value for money, leadership, manage-
ment policy, parental involvement, infrastructure provision, quality of alumni, honesty / integrity and
selectivity in admissions.
It is a matter of great pride for us that our school is placed among the Top Ten with reference to
Competence of Faculty, Sports Education, and Honesty and Integrity (transparency in
dealing with school functioning especially with students and parents).
The high rating that the school has received from public bears testimony to the fact that our
endeavours are being recognised.

The school is committed to its responsibiltiy to society and makes all

efforts to contribute its mite to social causes. Our school has won the

FIRST PRIZE for the 3rd consecutive year for

maximum contribution on the Armed Forces Flag Day.

Mr Hemant Kumar, Principal I/c attended the special function at the

 YEAR 2008-2009 IN RETROSPECT
Every year brings something new. This year
has been no different. There have been changes
in the school, not too radical but not too subtle
either. One such change was the setting up of
a Resource Room for teachers. This resource
room will enable the teachers to do some of their
important tasks, especially those related to com-
puter.
This year, the school has introduced a new
subject Graphic Design for the students of
Class XI in keeping with the demand of the
time and for their holistic development.
The next was the readjustment in the system
of refreshments. Now, students are served
snacks in the morning short break. This change
has found a way into most of the students’
hearts and has been appreciated by one and
all.
Our school management has always
persevered for better. Several committees,
including School Management Committee,
were constituted to facilitate smooth function-
ing of the school.
Shankarachar ya’s V isit
Visit
We were deeply honoured by the visit of His
Holiness Shankaracharya of Kanchi
Kamakoti Peetam on June 11, 2008. He
blessed our new Staff Training Centre by
lighting the lamp and chanting the mantras. His
divine presence lent an auspicious start to the
inception of the Training Centre.

ADIEU
We bid farewell to the following six members
of the Bhavan’s family who have retired after
contributing their best to it :
One of our oldest teachers, Mr. S. M. Desai,
Coordinator of Senior Section, served
Bhavan’s for 39 years. His soft-spoken words
and calmness under any provocation won the
confidence of all his colleagues.
Mr. C.M. George retired after having put in 35
years of service, most of which was devoted to
setting up the present day well- equipped Biol-
ogy Lab.
Ms. Snehlata Surana was with us for 33 years.
She was a hardworking teacher and discharged
her duties sincerely.
Mrs. S. Mane had a long innings of 21 years.
She retired as the Coordinator of K.G section.
Mrs. Sunanda Ekbote served the school for 21
years. Her gentle behavior endeared her to the
students and her colleagues.
Mrs. Chetna Parikh worked in the school for 20
years. As a member of the administrative staff,
she discharged her duties efficiently and sin-
cerely.

PRINCIPAL’S ANNUAL REPORT 2008-09
AL’S
Dr. Alpan Raval, an Associate Professor of
Mathematics and Computational Biology at the
Claremont Colleges in California, Mrs. Raval,
Shri S. Seshadri, our Director, Shri D.S Dalal,
Registrar, Esteemed guests, Members of the
Managing Committee of our school, respected
parents, Old students, Colleagues and my dear
students, It gives me immense pleasure to wel-
come you all for our annual day.
We are extremely happy to have in our midst,
Dr Alpan Raval, a distinguished old student
who passed out of the school in 1985. He had
consistently maintained a high academic record
throughout his schooling and his name figures
in our roll of honour. Moreover, he had secured
1st rank among CBSE schools in Gujarat in Std.
XII Board Examination. He pursued his educa-
tion and completed his M.Sc. 5 year integrated
programme in Physics from the prestigious IIT
Kanpur and later did his Ph.D. in Theoretical
Physics from University of Maryland, USA,
where he secured 1st rank among 60 Ph.D. can-
didates. He has a number of achievements to
his credit and some of them include his being
the recipient of Faculty Research Excellence
Award, Keck Graduate Institute. He has
authored about 30 referred publications in In-
ternational journals. Apart from discovering a
simple major cause of variations in evolution-
ary rate of genes within higher organisms, Dr.
Raval is also a co-investigator on the prestigious
5 million Dollar US National Science Founda-
tion Research grant award for studies at the
frontiers of Integrative Biological Research.

All these awards conferred on him bear a testi-
mony to his being an academician par excel-
lence and his presence has certainly added a
touch of grandeur to the occasion.
May I now present a brief report of some of the
achievements of the school?

Our school maintains an enviable track record
in academics and as usual academics contin-
ues to be our prime concern and top priority.
Our Board results for Std. X and XII have been
outstanding. Drishti Khatri of Std. X secured the
1st position with 94.33%. Agrim Gupta with 95%
and Rishabh Handa with 94.2% stood 1st and
2nd respectively in Vadodara city in the Std. XII
science stream Board examination. Abhishek
Jain stood first in XII commerce with 87% marks.
A total of 10 students were awarded certificate
of merit by CBSE for their outstanding perfor-
mance in the Board exams and for being among
the top 0.1% of successful candidates in Std. X
and XII examinations this year.
Shubhra Ruparel, Abhilash Nair and Thrishna
Menon secured cent % marks in Introductory
Information Technology and Reema Baxi se-
cured the same in Social Science. They have
also been honored by Shikshan Bharti for scor-
ing the highest marks in Std. X Board Exams.
Ashutosh Pathak was awarded a merit certifi-
cate and a cash prize by GAIL India for being
among the top five in Hindi in Std. X Board Ex-
amination in Vadodara city.
Education world sur vey

It gives me immense pleasure to announce that
Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan’s Vadodara has been
ranked 1st in the city, 3rd in Gujarat for the sec-
ond consecutive year and 17th among the top
schools in Western Region and 59th in the coun-
try on the basis of a survey conducted by “Edu-
cation World”, the Human Development Maga-
zine in its September 2008 issue. Education
World surveyed more than 125 Day Schools
on 12 different parameters and our school is
among top 10 schools all over India in 3 pa-
rameters: faculty competence, honesty / integ-
rity (transparency in dealing with school func-
tioning especially with students and parents)
and sports education.
Our school has been the co-coordinating cen-
tre for both AIEEE and GATE for 5 consecutive
years.
Sports round up
We are also proud to announce that in the
sports arena school features 8th in the country
according to the Education World Survey.
Sports and games are the bedrock of discipline
and hence great emphasis is laid on these
activities in the school. Therefore games have
been made compulsory from this year for the
students up to Std. VIII and optional for the
students from Std. IX to XII.
Some of our sports achievements are as
follows
1. Ambica Batas our ace skater, showed her
mettle at the District level Skating Competi-
tion by bagging 3 Silver medals. She will
be participating at the School Games Na-
tionals at Chandigarh. She was awarded Rs
4500/- by Shri. Narendra Modi, Chief Min-
ister of Gujarat, on Women’s Day and also
won the Rajya Ramat Veer Award of Rs
2500/-. She has been nominated for Sardar
Patel Award for excellence in sports for the
3rd consecutive year.
2. Sagar Hastak of Std. XI bagged 4 Gold med-
als in the U-19 CBSE West Zone Swimming
Championship and was awarded individual
championship. He also bagged 1 Bronze
medal in 100 mts free style in the U-16 cat-
egory in both the IPSC Nationals and CBSE
Nationals.
3. Dhrumil Gandhi of Std. IX was selected for
the Gujarat U-16 Football team to play in
the All India National Mir Iqbal Football Tro-
phy.
4. 28 schools participated in CBSE West Zone
Tennis Championship and our school’s U-
19 team comprising Rushi Amin, Kavit
Mehta, Bruhad Mankad and Nakul Naik was
the champion and will participate in CBSE
National Tennis Championship. Rushi Amin
and Kavit Mehta have been selected for the
U-19 IPSC Tennis team to represent in
SGFI games. Bruhad Mankad is selected
in the U-17 for the same.
5. Kandarpa Makwana of STD VI received a
scholarship of Rs. 5500/- from Sports Au-
thority of Gujarat for Excellent performance
in swimming.
6. 17 schools participated in the The Mayor’s
Cup U-16 Inter School Football tournament
and our school emerged victorious. Dhrumil
Gandhi, Amogh Godbole, Abhishek Shah,
Aman Shah and Soham Pendse from the
team have been selected to play for the
Baroda District Football team.
7. Rushali Jaiswal and Aastha Shah of Std.
IX played for Baroda U-19 Basket-Ball team
in the youth Basketball Championship in
which Baroda team became champion. In
the CBSE Cluster Basketball Tournament
Zeel Gandhi was awarded the Promising
Player of the Tournament.
8. Era Moghe of Std. VIII and Shashwat
Bulusu of Std. VII were selected for Baroda
district U-14 Basketball team in which
Baroda District team became Champions.
9. Dimpi Thakkar of Std. VII won both the Gold
and Silver medals in the open Baroda Skat-
ing Competition in the U-14 category.
10. Prabhav Thakkar and Anand Bhuwa of Std.
V won the first and second position respec-
tively in the 10th Open Baroda District Ka-
rate Championship organized by Alkapuri
Officer’s Club.

Extra curricular activities
Co-curricular activities are the hall-mark of
public schools and keeping with this trend, our
school provides a platform to the students in
various activities, through Inter House compe-
titions which were held in conformity with the
well-planned school calendar. In addition to the
Intra School contests students are also encour-
aged to participate at Inter School level.

 Our school was adjudged the best in the West
Zone Science Exhibition conducted on 4th and
5th August by CBSE. The model for Water
Management for Modern Vadodara presented
by Std IX students comprising Abhishek Kahar,
Aaditya Jain, Manthan Joshi and Ujjwal Shah
enabled them to qualify for the next round at
National level in the category of Water
Management.
Shrey Bhat of Std. X received 1st prize in the
O.P Jindal Poetry Writing Contest.
Our team consisting of Shaurya Singh of Std.
VIII and Rohini Singh of Std. X bagged 1st prize
in the Quiz Competition conducted by Vadodara
Management Association.
In a written quiz under the programme ‘Save
the Earth’ organized by ICWESSAR, Jayati
Bhatt of Std. X topped the Senior Category and
bagged a gold medal. Out of 200 students who
took part, 114 scored distinction grade. The
teacher-in-charge Dr. Anjali Dhar received the
Pariyavaran Dhronacharya Award.
The team comprising Niyati Khamar of Std. VI
and Suraj Pandya of Std. VII stood first in Maggi
Good Food Quiz organized for Std. 6th and 7th.
Iken scientifica 2008, a Pan-India event using
the latest technology was organized in our
school.
Our school organized the 13th Interschool Gita
Recitation Competition and emerged as the
winners. As we were the host school, the tro-
phy was lifted by Reliance School, which stood
second in the contest.

As a part of our Green Drive, more than 250
students from primary and middle section with
the help of their teachers planted saplings on
31st July in our school campus. It was spon-
sored by Bombardier. Shri Rajeev Jyoti, Man-
aging Director of Bombardier also participated
in the programme and planted a sapling.

Along with the academic excellence, inculcat-
ing human values in the future nation builders
is of paramount importance. Hence, Bhavan’s
has instituted C. Subramaniam award, a spe-
cial award for the best character in 3 catego-
ries and a certificate for harmonious behaviour.
This is with a view of grooming the wholesome
personality of a child.
The school takes its responsibility towards the
welfare of the society at large seriously. Like
every year, this year too, students put their best
foot forward and collected a sum of Rs. 14,210/
- for Global Cancer Concern Society. For the
3rd consecutive year the school won the 1st prize
and an appreciation certificate for the maximum
contribution on the Armed Forces Flag Day
which is held to commemorate the services of
the martyrs who died serving the nation. This
year, the Governer of Gujarat will be honouring
our school for its outstanding contribution to the
cause, and for donating the highest sum in the
state, at a special function on Armed Forces
Flag Day, to be organized on 8th December in
Gandhinagar.
Visit to Nani Naroli
With a view to encourage the upcoming school,
our institution deputed the members from dif-
ferent departments to Bhavan’s Academy,
GIPCL, Nani Naroli where an interactive ses-
sion was arranged with the staff to familiarize
the Board question paper style and tips were
given to the students of the board classes to
instil confidence in them. Following this, the
students of Nani Naroli stayed in our campus
till the end of April and had intensive coaching
sessions to prepare them for their Board exami-
nations.
The school has also proposed to host IPSC and
CBSE activities in our school.
The school as the facilitator of civic activities,
has decided to throw open its doors to the resi-
dents of Baroda for the various cultural activi-
ties at a nominal charge.
Visitors
We were deeply honoured by the visit of his
Holiness Swami Jayendra Saraswati,
Shankaracharaya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam,
on June 11, 2008. He blessed our new
Staff Training Centre by lighting the lamp and
chanting the mantras.
School has been a host to distinguished
speakers who enlighten the students on
various issues related to their well-being.
Career Counselling sessions are also held from
time to time to assist the students to be aware
of the various avenues available.
Tours & T rips
Trips
Tours and trips are an important facet of our
school routine. We are committed to inculcate
a good general awareness, inter-personal skills
and poise and hence regular trips and yearly
tours are conducted which also offers them a
welcome change. During Diwali vacation stu-
dents from Std VI to IX went on an educational
tour to Madhya Pradesh visiting Bhopal,
Jabalpur, Kanha National Park and other his-
torical places.
The hostel students took a breather from their
hectic schedule to visit Patan and Diu. They
visited snehalaya, an old age home and or-
phanage to give back something of intangible
value to the society. They distributed sweets
and gifts and played games with the children
which brought a smile to their faces and also
turned out to be a reinvigorating experience for
our students.
Celebrations
While our school is one of the pioneers in tech-
nological advancement and modernization, it
has not forgotten its roots and thus celebrates
festivals like Navratri, Ganesh Chaturthi and
Janmastami with great zest and fervour. It also
paid homage to the unsung heroes who freed
out country by celebrating Independence Day
with great enthusiasm.
Principal’s Conference
Regional Conference of Bhavan’s schools
Principals of central and western zone was held
in our school campus in which principals of 9
schools participated. Various issues including
interactions of schools at common platform
were discussed. Shri Seshadari, the Director
took a session on Conflict Management and I
gave a presentation on IT implementation in
schools
It is important for teachers to continuously
reevaluate their skills and upgrade their knowl-
edge according to the need of the times. There
have been certain changes in the NCERT
syllabus in Social Science, Mathematics and
Hindi and accordingly Mrs Mamta Jain,
Mrs. Namrata Mahendra and Mrs. Anita Tripathi
attended an orientation programme organized
by CBSE for Master Trainers on the use of new
Textbooks.
Mrs. Tejashree Somani attended CBSE Math-
ematics orientation programme at Udaipur. A
seminar on empowering the teachers to en-
gage the students in learning Mathematics for
Std. VII to Std. XII was attended by Mrs. Sujata
Pagedar and Mrs. Devasena. Workshop on
Learning disability and Learning difficulty was
attended by Ms. Darshini Shah. Mr. Jayesh
Chaturvedi, Mrs Sonal Sharma and Mr.
Prashant Desai attended a two day symposium
on Open Source Software. Mrs. Sandhya Vig BHAVANITE-2009
and Mrs. Sheetal Nijhawan attended a two day
Workshop on “Developing a Need based Cur-
riculum”. A 3 day workshop held in our school
on Transformation conducted by Dr. B. M.
Palan was attended by our teaching staff. Work-
shop on Contextualising material was attended
by Mrs. Jayshree Sharma.

Ashutosh: Sir, I’m sure the students would be
excited to know more about your subjects of
research and your work in the field of Compu-
tational Biology….if you could throw some light
upon it.
Dr. Raval: My work centres around the
synthesis of Biology and Mathematics. I am a
part of the Human Genome Project which has
generated a lot of interest recently. Basically,
our job is to analyze DNA structure and its
mathematical aspects aided by computers.
Ashutosh: Sir, you graduated from the school
in 1985. What changes did you notice when
you stepped into the school today?
Dr. Raval: The school hasn’t undergone a dras-
tic change, but sure,there are a lot more facili-
ties now. We didn’t
have a computer lab
then.
Meet : After such a long
time, what are the as-
pects that you find un-
changed in the school?
Dr. Raval: Well, the stu-

Dr. Raval: I don’t remember actually participat-
ing in the function. It feels very strange being
addressed as a Chief Guest. But I’m certainly
looking forward to it.

What role did the school play in your success?
Dr. Raval: If truth be told, I was not genetically
predisposed to become a biologist. I even
managed to fail in one of my maths exams!
However, all the teachers were extremely
caring and supportive. It was they who made
me realize my potential. Passing through these
corridors of knowledge, I have gained
enormous experience. I am what I am, all
because of Bhavan’s.
Ashutosh: What were some of your favourite
things about school when you were a student
here?
Dr. Raval: In my opinion, the best thing about
Bhavan’s is the freedom it gives to its students.

 Regional Conference of Bhavan’s School Principals –
Central and W est Zone
West
Our School was the venue for the Regional Conference of Principals of Bhavans’ Schools
of Central and Western Zone. Nine Principals attended the conference held on 28th and 29th
August, 2008. There were intense discussions on various issues related to schools such as
comprehensive evaluation, Interschool competitions and cultural programme, Interschool
tournaments, Olympiad Camp, work shops and Shikshan Bharati’s ranking of schools.
Shri S. Seshadri, the Director, gave a power point presentation on management of
conflicts. It was followed by discussions on case studies involving conflicts based on real life
situations in schools .He invited the Principals to make use of the training centre facilities
available at our school to conduct their training programme and workshops. The conference
enabled them to plan out an effective programme of action for the next academic year.
Workshop on children with special needs
A workshop on ‘Children with special needs’ was organized by Shri. S. Seshadri, the
Director, for principals, teachers and counsellors of Bhavan’s schools in the Central and
West Zone from 4th - 6th December, 2008.
It was inaugurated by Shri A.K Sinha , Principal of Delhi Public School, Harni, Vadodara, who,
in his address, appreciated that schools are now more open and sensitive towards needs of
special children. He emphasized that Bhavan’s is a culture and a movement with a mission to
acquaint educators with simple yet essential strategies that would help children with learning
disabilities, and emotional and behavioral problems in classroom.
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Shruti Bhargava, Faculty of Home Science, MSU,
Vadodara, Mrs. Vasthala Sharma, Special Educator, Mumbai, and Dr. Sudipta Roy, Dept.of
Psychology, M.S. University, Vadodara. They focused on the role of teachers in dealing with
children having special needs. On the last day of the workshop, Mr. Rakesh Saxena , Director,
Sikshan Bharati ,addressed the school assembly motivating the young minds and lauding
the efforts taken by the school for organizing such workshops.

Mrs. Nirmala Ganesh and Mrs. Tejashree
Somani were deputed for evaluation of teach-
ers of GIPCL Bhavan’s on 20th January,
2009.They were accompanied by the Director
Mr. Seshadari and the Principal Mr. Hemant
Kumar.
A group of six Class XI students of Bhavan’s
School, Nadiad, stayed on our campus and
attended classes from 12th - 16th February,
2009. The objective of their visit was to seek
guidance on CBSE paper style, practical exam
and examination pattern with respect to the main
subjects in the commerce stream. They inter-
acted with the students of commerce batch for
an update of various reference books and
sample papers.
Promoting Professional Growth
The evolving changes in education require
teachers to update themselves on how to
enhance teaching strategies and how to effec-
tively apply them in classroom situations. For
this purpose, the teaching staff of our school
regularly attends workshops , seminars and
orientation programmes.
Principal I/c. Mr. Hemant Kumar attended
Conference of Principals of Sahodaya Schools
complexes organised by CBSE in Bhopal from
12th December to 18th December 2008. From
27th December to 29th December 2008, he was
at the Scindia School, Gwalior, where he
attended the 69th IPSC Annual Conference of
Principals. He also visited Bhavan’s Rajaji
Vidyashram, Chennai, from 27th January to 2nd
February, 2009.
Stress Management and Self-
Development Programme
A three-day workshop on “tranceformation” a
Holistic Stress Management and Self
Development Programme was organized for all
the teachers of the school in April 2008. It was
conducted by Dr. B.M. Palan, M.D. , D. Clin ,
Hypno. (U.S.A).
The programme focused on the need to trans-
form our life style, habits and attitudes in the
face of changing times and circumstances. It
comprised the basic theoretical concepts and
use of various techniques to develop positive
thinking and healthy attitudes which reflect on
one’s personal life and professional
performance.
The entire programme was an enriching
experience for the teachers.
Open Source Software Symposium
A symposium on Open Source Software was
organized by the Computer Centre of M.S.
University in association with Vibrant GNU and
Linux User Group on 12th and 13th April 2008.
Mr Jayesh Chaturvedi, Mrs. Sonal Sharma and
Mr. Prashant Desai from our school took part in
the symposium. Topics such as My SQL data-
base administration, Anti-spam protection, high
availability and high performance clustering, etc
were discussed. They also configured the mail
server. It was an enriching experience for all
the participants.
Online Learning Portal for
Mathematics
A seminar to empower the teachers to engage
students in learning Mathematics for std. VI to
XII was organized on 5th July, 2008 at Vidyani
Vidyalaya, Vadodara by GOCAN (Education
and Immigration Consultants Pvt. Ltd.) and
MMSE (Education Pvt. Ltd.). Mrs. Sujata
Pagedar and Mrs. Devasena from our school
participated in the seminar. The resource
person Dr. Manmohan Sharma (Ex. Professor,
Ohio University, USA) briefed the participants BHAVANITE-2009
on online learning portal for Mathematics, which
is the world’s first and America’s best learning
portal which is now in India. It provides
automatically graded and recorded instant
feedback, making it possible to improve the
progress of students.
Orientation Programme by NCERT
Mrs. Mamta Jain, Mrs. Anita Tripathi,

Class XI won the 1st prizes in Debate and
Essay Writing Contest respectively. Mahima

TCS IT WIZ 2008 Quiz Contest
Regional Level TCS IT WIZ 2008 Quiz
Contest was organized by Tata Consultancy
Services at Ahmedabad on 24th November
2008. 1200 students constituting around 600
teams from 70 schools participated in this mega
event. 6 teams comprising 12 students from our
school participated in it.
After the elimination round, 6 teams were
selected for the finals. Our Class XI students

the final round and secured the 4th position.
Each of them received a participation certificate

Het Kandoi (II), Shlok Singh Swanni, Devesh
Gianchandani, Yeshna Arya (VII), Kaashvi
Udwani (VIII) and Nilay Kandoi (X) of our school
were selected for the prestigious research
programme conducted by Dr. David Berner and
Dr. Michael Frank of University of California –
San Diego and Massachusetts Institute of Tech-
nology (MIT), USA. UCMAS, the number one
Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Institute in the
world, helps children to achieve all round

Six children of our school were selected out of
35,000 students enrolled at UCMAS Gujarat.
Out of these students, Kaashvi Udwani and
Nilay Kandoi were selected for the second

Competition held in the city on 13 th and

Iken ScientificA 2008
Axiom Education, an innovator in education
solutions, conducted its City Final Round of
Iken ScientificA 2008 Competition for 1,200 city
finalists on 4th January 2009 at our school. Iken
ScientificA is a first of its kind National Science
and Technology Competition organized for stu-
dents from Classes V to VIII.
The competition was held in three rounds- the
school level, the city level and the national
level.
In the competition held at city level, five out of
the eight final winners from Vadodara were from
our school. They are Dhruv Jaiswal (V B),
Brijesh Patel (VI A), Dhwanit Vispute (VII B),
Aayushi Parikh (VIII C) and Arundhati Kadam

The National Final Round was held in Mumbai
on 31st January, 2009. Four of our students
showed unwavering brilliance in this round.
Aayushi Parikh was declared the ‘Iken Student
Icon of India’. She received a Gold Medal, a
Crystal Trophy, a laptop,10000 kens, a certifi-
cate and a trip to Singapore.

bagged the 2nd position. Ashutosh Pathak and

Computer Society of India, Vadodara Chapter,
celebrated Computer Day at Institution of

tion, Poster Presentation and IT Implementa-

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute
conducts Australian National Chemistry Quiz
in an attempt to help the students in enhancing
their analytical thinking and interpreting skills.
The Quiz was organized in our school on
10th September, 2008. About 432 students from
Classes VII to XI took part in this quiz.

International Informatics Olympiad 2008
The International Informatics Olympiad 2008
was organized on 24th September, 2008, in our
school. A large number of students participated
in it. Out of the 500 students selected for the
second round at National level, 23 students
were from our school.
53 of our students won Class Toppers medals,
out of which 15 are Gold, 20 Silver and 18
Bronze.
BHAVANITE-2009
The final round was held on 16th January 2009
in our school. Akshay Mendiratta (Class IX),
Harsh Nisar (Class X) and Mayank Singh
(Class XII) ranked among the first 100 at Inter-
national level. Krishna Trivedi, Charoo Iyer,
Naman Govil, Harsh Nisar of Class X and
Mayank Singh and Marmeek Kosambia of
Class XII are among the top 5 students in the

 Independence Day
The students, infused with the spirit of patrio-
tism, saluted the tricolor when unfurled. Their
patriotic songs charged the atmosphere with
love for one’s country. Mr. Hemant Kumar,
Principal I/c. in his speech emphasized the
importance of independence in our lives and
guided us to identify our roles as responsible
citizens of the country.
Teacher ’s Day

our school. Classes XI and XII took to teaching
in classes. They decorated the porch, staff-
room and the lobby with cards, streamers and
ribbons. The student- teachers accompanied
the actual subject teachers to their respective
classes .
Both outdoor and indoor games were arranged
for teachers, of which the cricket match between
the staff and students was a roaring success.
After a scrumptuous lunch, teachers proceeded
to the auditorium for the cultural programme.

who has retired, was felicitated.
Students painstakingly adorned their class-
rooms and display boards for the occasion.

Children’s Day
Children’s Day, that marks the birth anniversary
of the first prime minister of independent India
– Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, was celebrated with
great enthusiasm. A special assembly was con-

lades in sports at the state and national levels
were honoured. Shri Seshadri, our Director and
mentor, advised the students to stay healthy and
focus on academics to ensure a bright future.
Republic Day
Republic Day was celebrated on 26th January.
After the hoisting of the tricolour, Mr Seshadri,

spoke about youth empowerment. He called for
scientific and technical development.
The choir group sang patriotic songs, striking
the patriotic chord in each heart. Student
speaker Ashutosh Pathak focused on self-reli-
ance in his speech. He urged the students to
play a pro-active role in the development of the
country and appealed to all to shun prejudices
and work towards three P’s i.e. Progress, Pros-
perity and Peace.
Basant Panchami
On 31st January, 2009, the boarders and teach-
ers assembled at the school temple to mark the
celebration of Basant Panchami. Through
prayers, we invoked Goddess Saraswati, an
epitome of knowledge and wisdom, to bless
and guide us to lead a virtuous life.
Tree Plantation
‘Tree Plantation Day’ was observed in school
on 31st July, 2008. Around four hundred sap-
lings were provided by the prestigious Bombar-
dier & Co. Ltd. These saplings were planted in
the football ground by students of Class V and
in Panchvati by Class VIII. However, before the
actual activity commenced, a heartfelt pledge
was taken by Mr Rajiv, M.D. Bombardier & Co.
Ltd., Mr S. Seshadri, Director, BVB, teachers
as well as students, to forever protect and nur-
ture the saplings planted by them. We hope to
see a greener campus, as well begun is half
done!
 EVENTS AND FUNCTIONS
Annual Day
Our school celebrated the Annual Day on
28 th November 2008. Dr. Alpan Raval,
Assistant and Associate Professor, Mathemat-
ics and Computational Biology, Claremont
Graduate University and Keck Graduate
Institute, California and an alumnus of the
school was the Chief Guest for the function.
The programme began on an auspicious note
with a Vedic Invocation. Our Director Shri
Seshadri welcomed the gathering. After the
presentation of the Annual Report, Dr. Raval
gave away prizes to the deserving students. In
his address, he recalled the school days with
nostalgia and spoke of the special role played
by his alma mater in shaping his career.
The Cultural Programme was based on
‘Vibrant Gujarat’. Jester ‘Vidushak’, in exhila-
rated spirit, cheered the audience and with
‘Rangla’ and ‘Rangli’ took us on a journey
through Gujarat. The Cultural and social
aspects reflected in the various dance forms
bore reminiscence to the bygone era, where
dances like ‘Prabhatyo’, ‘Matrji ni Mandavani’
and ‘Adi dance’ demonstrated the spiritual
aspect of Gujaratis; others like ‘Hudo’ and
‘Dandia’ showcased their social connected-
ness. The scene depicting the earthquake and
the state rising from the tragedy was a fitting
tribute to the resilient spirit of the people of
Gujarat. The programme also reminded us of
the legendary sons of the soil like Mahatma
Gandhi, Sardar Patel and Dhirubhai Ambani
who have left their footprints on the sands of
time. Overall, the programme enthralled one and
all.
Annual Exhibition
The Annual Exhibition on 27 th November
demonstrated the talent and creativity of the stu-
dents. Prof. S.M. Joshi, the Pro-Vice
Chancellor, M.S. University, inaugurated the
exhibition. Models, projects and crafts under
various sections highlighted the scientific
temper and ingenuity of our students.
The Physics section was adorned with prize-
winning models from different West-Zone
schools under the aegis of Bhavans. Students,
accompanied with their teachers, eloquently
explained the working models, thus preparing
ground for exchange of ideas and programmes.
Model of a Robot and generation of clean fuel
deserve a special acknowledgement. In the
Biology section, a replica on knee surgery and
its replacement and repair was highly appreci-
ated. The project on the burning issue - global
warming acted as a torch bearer towards the
gloomy condition of our environment.
The Computer section attracted many visitors
and guests. The exhibits were prepared using
programs like Q Basic, C++, Powerpoint,
Excel and HTML. Demonstration on ethical
hacking left everyone spellbound.
The Chemistry section displayed projects on
Thermodynamics, Chemical Equilibrium,
Reverse Osmosis and Chemical Sunset. The
experiment on fortune telling was a big draw
among visitors.
The Social Science faculty drew inspiration from
Vibrant Gujarat and showcased models on eco-
nomic and cultural achievements of the state.
Models of the Nano Car Factory, Narmada Dam
and replica of a Garba ground with dancers
were praised by all.
BHAVANITE-2009
Our school’s very first Graphic Design exhibi-
tion drew in rave responses from visitors. A 3D
structure of our school campus made by the
pioneering students of class XI in Blender was
liked by one and all.
Our school ranks 8 th in the country in
Sports Education. Various sports kits,
equipments and accessories were displayed for
sports enthusiasts.

 Annual Sports Day
The most awaited event for the high spirited
Bhavanites is the Annual Sports Day, which,
this year, was celebrated on January 25th 2009.
Mr Atul Srivastava, Sr. Divisional Security
Commissioner,Vadodara, presided over the
function. Master Dishant Shah, National Bas-
ketball player, was the Guest of Honour. The
programme commenced with the students of the
four Houses marching past the gathering with
the NCC squads lending a spectacular lead.

Mr Hemant Kumar, the athletes took oath and
the Chief Guest declared the Annual Athletic
Meet Open.
Mr Sanjay Thakur, the Sports Incharge, read
out the Sports Report which highlighted the
achievements of the athletes and also bore tes-
timony to our emphasis on physical education.
Nursery and KG classes flagged off the day’s
events with the balloon race and lezium race.
Events like tricycle race, ring race, sack race
and hockey race were conducted amid cheer-
ing applause from the guests.
High pitch of excitement was seen when par-
ticipants from different Houses took to 100m
individual and 400m relay races. A game of
musical chairs for parents and teachers enliv-
ened the programme and made the participants
feel like a child again !
The audience applauded the impressive dis-
play by children of Classes IV and V and
Classes VI and VII on Rang De Basanti and
Chak de India respectively.
This was followed by prize distribution for vari-

In his speech, the Chief Guest congratulated
one and all for their unflinching support and en-
thusiasm. He laid emphasis on traditions and
values and urged the children to be dedicated
and sincere in all their undertakings.He was
presented a memento by the Director,
Mr Seshadari.

Aashirvachanam
Ashirvachanam,Valedictory function for the
outgoing Class XII was solemnized on
February 20, 2009.
Dr. Anil Kane, Former Vice-Chancellor, M.S.
University, Vadodara, presided over the
function.The school bid adieu to the out-going
students with love and blessings.The ceremony
commenced with the traditional exhortation to
the students from the Rig Veda.It was read out
in Sanskrit and English.
In his address, Dr.Kane emphasised that we
should have ideals in our lives.He encouraged
us to lead an upright life and to be truthful in all
our undertakings.
Later, the students expressed their gratitudes
to their parents and teachers in true Indian
style.They were presented with gifts from the
school and the students of Class XI.The
function ended with a Valedictory dinner.
Funfair
Funfair 2009 charged the air with excitement
as it was revived after a gap of eight years!
Various stalls for games,food and entertainment
were set up by the students with the help of their
teachers. While youngsters made a beeline for
tattos and badges, others were drawn towards
“Delhi Chaat Express” and “Soda Corner.”
The center stall was the cynosure of all eyes
as it had something in the offing for one and
all.The sportive played Housie , the light-
hearted got a taste of home-made chocolates
and the playful demanded songs on request.
As the evening progressed the excitement too
reached a feverish pitch. Amusement rides for
kids drew a large crowd.As all good things
come to an end , so did the FunFair. Enthusi-
asts now look forward to FunFair-2010 !.
 TALKS AND DEMONSTR ATIONS
DEMONSTRATIONS
Demonstration on Ethical Hacking
A lecture on Ethical Hacking along with a live
demonstration was given by Mr Ankit Fadia, the
world renowned computer security expert, on
18th November, 2008. Students were enthralled
by his live demonstration on hacking. They
were taught to secure their computers by ap-
plying “six point program”. They were also
made aware of the latest cyber crimes commit-
ted worldwide. It was an extremely beneficial
and interesting lecture, one which the students
enjoyed immensely.
Guidance from Expert Mathematician
Mr Ajeeth Prasath Jain, Principal, Bhavan’s
Chennai, visited our school as a part of the
Competitive Evaluation Team. He has won the
prestigious National Best Teachers’ Award and
is a subject expert for Class X for CBSE in the
southern region.He took a full day session for
Class X students and gave them detailed infor-
mation on the blue-print of the question paper,
the marking scheme and useful tips to optimize
their performance in the forthcoming Board
Exam.
Gearing Up for Guinness –
A demonstration of reverse driving
Mr. Gajanand Dhumad, an aspirant for an
entry in the Guinness Book Of World Records
for reverse driving, demonstrated his skill on the
school’s sprawling grounds, driving in standard
Maruti 800 vehicle fitted with self- made reverse
gear. His performance earned a huge applause
from the students and the staff.
Oral Health Programme
Colgate Palmolive India, sponsored National
School Oral Health Program in coordination
with K.M Shah Dental College and Hospital and
Indian Dental Association, Vadodara branch,
in our school for Classes VI to XII As a part of
the program, oral health education and teeth
brushing techniques were demonstrated and
baseline data related to oral hygiene practices
and dentition status were collected so as to help
plan further oral health programs for school
children.
Awareness on Cancer
A talk on Oral Cancer was given on 23 rd
August, 2008, by Mr. J.A.Raj, Deputy Director
of Global Cancer Concern, which is a well
established and committed NGO working in the
field of cancer care. Students were particularly
made aware of the ill-effects of consumption of
tobacco in the form of smoking, gutka etc.
A talk on cancer was given by a representative
of Cancer Aid Society for a nationwide cancer
control programme . Students were made aware
of the symptoms of the disease and ways to
combat it.Practical tips were given on various
food items rich in anti-oxidants.The talk was
made so easy that even the young students
could understand it.
Prospects in Pharmacy
The science section of Class XI attended a talk
given by Dr. Upadhyay, Principal, Sigma
College of Pharmacy. He acquainted the
students with the basics of the course and the
various drugs in use. He also highlighted the
future prospects for students of Pharmacy. The
talk was interesting and informative.
Importance of Science in Society
Mr. Mayur Sathe, a chemical engineer and a
member of Marathi Vigyan Parishad, talked to
the students of Classes IX and XI on
‘The Importance of Science in Society’ on
17th January, 2009. The discussion session
was accompanied by a slide show. The
question-answer session gave a chance to the
students to broaden their horizon.
BOOK FAIRS
Book exhibitions are held annually in our BHAVANITE-2009
school to inform the students of various kinds
of reading material available and to inculcate
good reading habits in young learners.
This year several book fair were organized
by Addone Publishing Group, Scholastic
Publications and Maneesh Book Depot.
Students, teachers and parents were invited
to attend these bookfairs which included
books on various subjects.

 Community Ser vice
Service
Our school realises its social responsibilities,
and attempts to sensitize the students towards
social issues. Our students have always risen
to the occasion and come forward to lend a will-
ing hand for collecting funds for any social
cause.
The school collected a sum of Rs 8,145 for the
Kutch Vikas Trust. This organization works for
providing developmental service to society and
runs a school,an old age home,a physiotherapy
centre and a number of hospitals. It also orga-
nizes eye camps, training and rehabilitation
STUDENTS’ VISITS
Air Show
An air show was hosted by Air Force Station,
Vadodara, on 7th April, 2008. Class X and XII
students had a taste of fine mid-air aerobic skills
of Suryakiran Fighter Planes. A team of pilots
displayed various formats from hollow, diamond
and delta formation to creating heart shapes
and rays of rising sun in the sky. It was followed
by one display by paratroopers and another of
Air Force ground equipment. The students en-
joyed the show and some were motivated to
join the armed forces.
M.S. University and Vadodara
Vadodara
Museum
Class XI students of Graphic Design course
visited the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University,
BHAVANITE-2009
and the Sayaji Baug Museum on 2nd January,
2009 as a part of their curriculum. The objec-
tive was to get hands-on experience . They
learnt about the different painting techniques
like lithography and etching. They felt that go-
ing around the museum was like going back
into the history. The exquisite paintings left the
students spellbound. In all, it was an enriching
experience for the future artists and designers .

homes for earthquake affected people of Kutch.
A sum of Rs. 14,210 was collected by the
students from Classes VI to VIII for Global
Cancer Concern and was handed over to
to its Deputy Director Mr. J.A Raj, in the school
assembly.
For the 3rd consecutive year the school won the
1st prize and an appreciation certificate for the
maximum contribution, amounting to
Rs. 30,554 on the Armed Forces Flag Day
which is held to commemorate the services of
the martyrs who died serving the nation.
Shri Mudra Nidhi Coin Museum
The Educational Trip to Shri Mudra Nidhi Coin
Museum near Ajwa Gardens on 31st Decem-
ber, 1st, 2nd and 5th January for Classes VI, VII,
VIII and IX respectively was a learning
experience for the students. The museum is the
country’s first private coin museum to
contribute to preservation of numismatics
heritage of India. It displays coinage of 2600
years dating from 6th century B.C. to modern day
credit – cards. Children were made aware about
the culture and history of our country as depicted
in the coins.
The Museum also promotes coin collection as
a hobby among young children.
Trip to Science City - Ahmedabad
Students of Classes VIII and IX visited Science
City – Ahmedabad on 9th and 11th February,
2009 respectively. They saw various models
of rockets and space ships in ‘Hall of Science’
and ‘Hall of Space’ and working models of wind
mills, solar panels, bio-gas plants, hydroelec-
tricity and an oil rig in the Energy Park. Students
enjoyed watching 3D movies ‘Cyber World’
and ‘Deep in the Sea’.
 TOURS, TREKS AND CAMPS
Nature is a storehouse of beauty which
fascinates man and is a source of joy and
happiness. Our school gives ample opportuni-
ties to students to experience and enjoy the
beautiful bounty of nature.
Classwise tours, treks and camps were
organized, in association with NEEDS, in
order to impart nature education and spread the
message of conservation.

An adventure camp to Jayalgarh in
Uttarakhand was organized for the students of
Classes IX and XI from 27th April to 5th May,
2008.
The students were overjoyed trying out some
of the exciting water sports such as river raft-
ing, kayaking bridge slithering, rock climbing,
rapelling etc.

orest
Gir forest is dry, deciduous ,scrub and tropical
thorn forest. Students of Class VI
enjoyed this extravaganza in the premises of
Sakkarbaug Zoo, Junagadh, from 6th - 9th
February, 2009. Activities that were carried out
in these four days and three nights programme
included forest trekking, bird watching, plant
identifications and discussion on important
environmental issues . These ‘wild’ holidays
were an enthralling experience for all the
students which brought them close to ‘Mother
Nature’. Students also visited the world famous
Somnath Temple.
Heritage Tour
Tour
Students of Class VII went on a heritage tour to
Modhera, Patan, Zainabad (Little Rann of
Kutch) and Nal Saraovar, from 6th to
8th February, 2009.
Heritage tour to Madhya Pradesh
Students of Classes VI to IX were given an
opportunity to explore the fascinating Madhya
Pradesh in all its myriad forms from 4th to 11th
October, 2008. Bhopal situated on the site of
an 11th century city , Bhojpal, was the ideal
base for discovering the rich historical and cul-
tural legacy of the state. Other places included
the famous monuments at Sanchi , Marble
Rocks at Bhedaghat , Dhauandhar Falls and
Kanha National Park.

 HOSTEL NEWS
“A home away from home” perfectly suits the
hostels of our school. The House Masters have
a great responsibility, that of looking after the
children in the hostel. Here, the students learn
to be independent and shoulder responsiblity.
Every Saturday, the students immerse them-
selves in temple activities, where they take part
in debates, bhajans and discussions on gen-
eral knowledge topics.
This year, all the hostel students visited “Don
Bosco Snehalaya”, Vadodara, a home for or-
phan children. They spent the whole evening
playing games and sharing their experiences.
As a token of their love, they collected clothes,
stationery items and shoes for them.They also
learnt about social and economical problems
faced by the orphans.
On the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi, the idol of
Vignaharta Lord Ganesha was installed in Kala
NEWS FROM THE PRIMARY SECTION
Education is not merely imparting knowledge
but also the nurturing of young individuals and
creating a condusive environment to the
development of well-rounded personality.
Activities in this section are planned to provide
ample opportunities to children to develop and
display their talent.
The new session 2008-2009 began on a
promising note. Mrs.Daksha Desai, Coordina-
tor of Classes III to V, took charge as Head-
mistress of Classes Nursery to V. Under her
able leadership, various activities like parental
involvement, field trips, celebration of festivals,

puppet shows, magic shows etc. were
conducted .
Good values are imbibed from our immediate
surroundings. Students of Class V attended
regular sessions conducted by Mrs. and
Mr. Gupta who oriented the children towards
developing moral values.

This was followed by puja and distribution of
prasad. The idol was later submerged in the
Tarsali lake five days later in keeping with the
tradition.
On Janamasthmi, boarders of both the halls
assembled in Kala Bhavan for the ceremonial
puja. After this, they enjoyed making the
pyramids for the Matka breaking ceremony.
All the boarders and teachers of the school
assembled in the school temple for “ Saraswati
Puja” to celebrate Basant Panchami. On the eve
of New Year, the boys enjoyed a campfire in
the school campus.
Such celebrations portray Bhavan’s as the
upholder of Indian culture and Bhavanites as
the care -takers of the rich cultural heritage.
A medical check- up was conducted for all the
students of the section.
Child-oriented, interactive parent-teacher
meetings were held during the year as
scheduled.
Students of the section enthusiastically partici-
pated in the Annual Day celebration and
displayed their creativity and innovative ideas
in the Exhibition. The Rangoli Competition
revealed the artistic skills of the participants.
Apart from this, many other competitions were
held as scheduled.
The various activities organised in the Nursery
Section for the tiny-tots were based on sea-
sons, festivals, shapes, colours and storytelling.
Emphasis was given to use innovative ideas,
be it the race in Red Indian outfits or the dance
using rain gear. A unique feature seen this year
was the presence of grandparents in class-
rooms which was a source of delight for both
the child as well as the grandparents.

Tours and trips are not mere outings for the
students but also meaningful learning
experiences which help to develop their
interpersonal relationships outside the four
walls of a classroom.
This year, the students of Classes IV and V were
taken to Champaner - a World Heritage Site
and Gujarat’s place of pride.
Students of Classes I, II and III visited Fazalpur
ravines, while students of KG I and KG II
visited a zoo, plant- nursery and Gujarat Fun
World.
For nursery classes, field trips to Lal Bagh,
Haveli, Palace, More Mega Mart & Roses Nurs-
ery were organized to give firsthand experience
to the children.
Parental Involvement
Children eagerly await the parental involve-
ment activities which are a regular feature in
KG & primary sections. Parents share their
creative ideas with children through ac-
tivities. The items prepared during such
activities are displayed through an exhi-
bition.
As a part of the parental involvement,
Mrs. Darshini Shah, Counselor of our
school, conducted sessions for parents on
parenting and raising high E.Q. in children.
The aim of these sessions was to make
parents aware about the communication
style they use with their children and its
impact on them. Various items like wall
hangings, card- making, envelop- making,
autograph book, photo frame etc. were
made by the students from KG to Std.V. The
aim of these activities was to
develop a bond between them, their family
members and friends and to express their
gratitude towards their parents . Various
activities were also conducted to develop
their creativity, team spirit and interpersonal
relationship.
Convocation for KG II
Organising a convocation for the tiny tots is a
dream for KG teachers, as after Kindergarten
they are ready for the rigours of formal
education.
The convocation ceremony for senior KG
students was held on 27th February, 2009 in the
school auditorium. The programme com-
menced with shloka recitation by the students,
followed by lighting of lamp by the Chief Guest,
Dr. Leena Mehta.
Students wore black gowns along with a cap
and resembled graduating scholars. Their little
friends from Nursery and KG I bade them fare-
well by presenting a lively stage show.
Parents of KG children were also present for
the ceremony and took pride in the achieve-
ments of their wards as citations were read out
for each student. At the end of the programme,
the students were awarded diplomas and were
presented with books.

 SPORTS ROUND UP
Games are the bedrock of discipline.They
inculcate co-operation, perseverance and team
work An effective way to ensure a sharp mind
and a healthy body is to invovle students in
sports and hence ample opportunities are pro-
vided to encourage the students to participate
in games .
We are very proud to announce that in Games
and Sports arena our school features 8th in the
country, according to a survey conducted by
Education World.
To develop sportsman spirit and leadership
quality,the senior students are given the
responsibility of captaining the four Houses,
namely Janak, Kabir, Nanak & Vashisht , and
organizing various events.
Our outstanding achievers in the sports arena
have won laurels for themselves and the school
and we are immensely proud of them. They
were awarded prizes on Annual Sports Day for
their commendable performances.

The beginning of the year itself was eventful
when many of our Vashishtites were given high
posts in the prefectorial board. Hiteshi Acharya
was chosen as the Head girl while Reema Baxi

of the school. We take pride in saying that they

THE COUNSELING CENTRE
The counseling centre started to function in the
school in August 2007. Since its inception, it
has catered to the varying needs of the students,
teachers, parents, as well as the institution. It
offers a variety of services like individual and
group counseling, and also organises aptitude,
personality and interest tests.
Being away from home, the hostel students may
experience difficulties in maintaining
relationships, in adjusting to the enormous
demands put on them by their friends, peers,
teachers, and parents. For these reasons,
regular group sessions are conducted for
providing emotional support to these students.
Designed especially for the hostel students,
weekly group sessions were taken on many
topics like enhancing creativity, team building,
anger management, problem solving, assertive
training, empathy etc.. The main objective of
these sessions is to make the students feel at
home in the school, and to reassure them that
there is someone to hear them and help them
out. Interactive sessions are conducted through
constructive activities like story building, short
skit, watching English movies etc. Many hostel
students,on joining the school, had many
self-doubts and low self-esteem. With passage
of time, it was found that there was a marked
change in their self-esteem and academic
performance. Through the feedback from
students, it has been ascertained that the
counseling sessions helped them in many
ways.
There are several children in the school who
come from emotionally disturbed or broken
families. In such situations, a little support from
the centre helps students to gain an insight into
the problem, and helps them to effectively deal
with it, thus bringing an overall development in
their intellectual and emotional growth.
Regular students are also referred to the
counseling centre with problems and issues
ranging from poor academic performance to
emotional trouble and relationship issues.
Sessions with these students are conducted
during school hours within free periods and with
the permission of the concerned teacher. On
rare occasions, parental involvement is also
required.
Many workshops for students, teachers, and
parents were organized within the premises
which saw overwhelming response as well as
feedback. There was a brief session on
parenting for the Class III-V students’ parents,
and a workshop on “Art of Parenting” for
nursery students’ parents by Mrs. Sudipta Roy,
a lecturer from the Department of Psychology,
M.S.University.
A brief seminar on success and excellence was
conducted by Dr. Palan for Class XI students.
A workshop on 7 Habits of Highly Effective
People was arranged for Class IX students and
the resource person was by Mr. Keyoor Joshi.
A quiz on mental health awareness was
conducted for Class VIII students. A poster mak-
ing competition was also organized for Classes
V -IX and XI on various topics like importance
of friendship, family, the technological world,
peer pressure, cyber responsibility, substance
abuse, dilemma of teens etc.

A MEMOR ABLE EXPERIENCE
MEMORABLE
The students of classes 8th to 10th were taken
on an adventure trip to Jayalgarh, Uttarakhand.
Situated among lush green mountains with the
crystalline waters of the Ganges flowing by, this
place is a sight to behold.
“This was the best trip we ever had. It was
simply amazing,” says Sagar Hastak, our ace
swimmer. Our journey started on 26th May.
Sitting in the train, playing cards, listening to
music or laughing at our friends’ jokes, we had
a very enjoyable time. We were awestruck
seeing the sheer beauty around our campsite.
“Lounging on cozy chairs and enjoying the
breathtaking vista was a great experience,”
asserts Siddharth Patel, our Vice-Head boy.
The first activity planned for us was white-
water rafting. Sitting in the rubber rafts, being
doused with icy water was a thrilling as well as
a terrifying experience. “It was a rather frightful
experience when I fell off the raft into the wild
rapids. I hung on for dear life and was able to
climb on-board,” recalls Ruturaj Mahida. But as
Rishabh Singh asserts “What’s wrong in
giving salt to life ??”
After rafting, we were eagerly awaiting the other
activities. To our delight, it was announced that
we would be doing rappelling. Believe me,
hanging 20 feet in the air, supported by means
of a thin rope and staying perfectly horizontal
on the rocky surface is no mean feat. “It was
terrifying but thrilling too”, chorus Dipin, Sudip
and Umair. In the afternoon, we were taken for
bridge-slithering. This was the most challeng-
ing activity that demanded every ounce of
courage from us. We were expected to slide
down a rope, tied on the support beams of the
Lakshman Jhula, and drop down into the
gushing waters. Imagine, a drop of about 100
feet!
At first , none of us was willing to do it. But as
pride triumphed fear, we gave it a try. Climbing
over the bridges railing and looking down made
our hearts skip a beat. Not the ones to turn back,
we steeled our hearts, slid down and plunged
head first into the water. Strange as it may
seem, we felt exhilarated. Of one thing we were
certain, filmstars would never even dare to du-
plicate our dare-devilry!
On the third day, we again went for rafting. The
ride was as enjoyable as the previous one. And
in the evening we were free to play any game
we liked. Though quite tired, we enjoyed the
evening immensely. The next morning we bid
adieu to our camp site and started on our jour-
ney back to Baroda. Believe me, this trip was
truly an unforgettable experience.

The simple yet beautiful Dilaram Bungalow
whish is located in Alkapuri, Baroda, opposite
Circuit House is known for the rich history and
culture associated with it.
The bungalow is famous due to the short pe-
riod of stay by Swami Vivekanand before he
left for his famous trip to Chicago.
Six students of Class XIIC went on a short trip
there. The bungalow, which was formerly a
government property, was given to the
Ramakrishna Mission due to the link which
binds the two. Th students were given a tour of
the entire bungalow, including a stint at the
meditation room in which they practised
meditation. The icing on the cake was un-
doubtedly the speech given by Swami
Nikhileshwaranandji. He spoke of the impor-
tance of Swamiji’s sayings, the importance of
spirituality and culture and the role of youth in BHAVANITE-2009
modern society. He enlightened them on the
correct way to lead a fulfilling life in a peaceful
manner. The trip was indeed a very enlighten-
ing and memorable one.

Tour Too The Heart Of India-
Madhya Pradesh
We were offered “once in a life time” opportu-
nity to explore fascinating Madhya Pradesh
with all its myriad facts. We left Baroda at 8:30
am. The travel by Bhopal Express was quite
enjoyable. We reached Bhopal next morning
at 9:30 am .Bhopal is the ideal base for discov-
ering the rich historical and cultural legacy of
the state. It is situated on the site of an 11th
century city, Bhojpal ,founded by Raja Bhoja.
Bhopal today presents a multifaceted profile ;
the old city with its teeming marketplaces and
fine old mosques and palaces still bear the aris-
tocratic imprint of its former ruler.
We visited Sanchi & Udaygiri caves . Sanchi is
known for stupas , monastries, temples and pil-
lars dating from the third century BC to the 12th
century AD. The world renowned Sanchi
stupas have been declared as a world heritage
site by UNESCO. Our next stop was Jabalpur
and from there we boarded a bus to Kanha.
Early the next morning we went to visit the
Tiger Reserve and saw many different wildlife
species and immensely enjoyed an elephant
ride. In the tiger museum we saw interesting
documentaries on the majestic beast. In the
evening we went for a trek in the buffer area of
the forest. The next day we reached Jabalpur
and then went to visit the Bhedaghat and
Dhuandhar Falls also known as the ‘Smoke
Cascade’ . The cascading water presented a
terrific site .It was then that we truly realized the
extent of Mother Nature’s might. At Bhedaghat
we saw holy river Narmada snaking its way
through the Marble rocks.

gave us the wonderful feeling of being close to
nature. It was really an adventurous trip which

Our class trip to Gir Forest was enjoyable and
full of fun. Early morning, on 6th February, we
set out on 3 nights - 4 days camp by bus for
Junagadh. Our camp site was situated in
Sakarbaug Zoo. We stayed in alpine tents with
6-7 of us sharing a tent.
We visited a nearby fort, a dam and Somnath
Temple. Our Gir safari was the most exciting
part of the trip. We were lucky to see three lion-
esses, one lion and cub in the sanctuary.
Cut off from luxuries and gadgets, dining in
natural surroundings with teachers and friends
and viewing animals around our camp site was
fascinating. We returned at night on 9th Febru-
ary. The sweet memories of the trip are still fresh
in my mind.

Memories of the Heritage Tour
Tour
Day 1 : 6th Feb ’09
At 6:30 a.m in the morning we boarded the bus
and bid goodbye to our parents. After a tedious
journey, we reached Nal Sarovar , a bird sanc-
tuary for the rarest migratory birds. We had a
pleasant time boating and watching the birds.
After lunch,we visited the famous Sun Temple
at Modhera in Mehsana. The ruins of this
temple are testimony to its beauty. At last,
we reached ‘ Hotel Garden’ in Patan, at
8:00 p.m.
Day 2 : 7th Feb
After a scrumptuous breakfast at 8:00 a.m,we
went to visit the local places in Patan. We were
shown the making of the world famous Patola
fabric and designs. Then we saw the skillful
handmade papercutting. After lunch, we
visited Rani-ki-Vav, an understep well, famous
for is carvings and Sahastralinga Lake, now
quite dry. At night, we had a good time
enjoying the camp fire.
Day3: 8th Feb
This was the last day of the trip. We left our hotel
to visit Zainabad, on Little Rann of Kutch where
we saw salt-farming. We also got to know the
social and economic hardships faced by the
people there. Next,we visited the Wild Ass
Sanctuary. From there we bid goodbye to our
trip and returned to school with a yearning for a
longer trip.

TRIP TO SCIENCE CITY

The day -9th February ,2009 dawned bright &
clear. In school,we were thrilled at the prospect
of going out for the whole day. No studies
today!!
We boarded the bus at 8:30 am and reached
our destination at 11:45 am. We entered the
Science City building called ‘Hall of Science’
and ‘Hall of Space’. We saw various models of
rockets and space ships .There was a lot of
information about the solar system and the uni-
verse. Some of the rocket models could be
handled using the remote ,the ‘croma –effect’
was created and there was a simulation ride to
Mars, which we enjoyed thoroughly. There was
information on a different astronauts and the
ways in which they communicate via satellite.
Many experiments related to electricity and
magnetism were also arranged which were ex-
citing and new for us.
By 1:30 pm. we had our lunch and went to the
Energy Park where we saw wind mills , solar
panels, biogas plants, hydroelectricity and an
oil rig, which were all working models. We saw
‘polymers ’ which are used in a house for daily
use, from tables to chairs, mattress, curtains,
cupboards, mugs etc.
The ‘Eco friendly ‘house was the next attrac-
tion . By 5:30 pm we were ready to see the the-
atre which is underground . We saw the movie
called ‘Cyber World’ and we screamed and
laughed in fun. It was so thrilling!
We were tired and by 7:30 pm we boarded the
bus for the return journey. What an enlighten-
ing trip it was !!

BOARDERS’ TRIP TO PATAN
PAT
Our trip to Patan was a combination of refresh-
ment and educational exposure.
It was a beautiful place with two architectural
evidences from the past. The walls and pillars
of the Sun Temple and Rani ki Vav were beau-
tifully carved as King Bhimdev Solanki’s work
of 11th Century wasn’t supposed to be plain.
The entrances, walls and pillars of the Sun
Temple portray incidents from Ramayana and
Mahabharata. The “Rani ki Vav” built by Queen
Minaldevi Solanki is a marvellous effort to
create self-sufficiency of water for the people
in such an arid place, that too at a time when
Science didn’t occupy a common place in the
society and Royal Court.
We also witnessed the famous Patola
Weaving. ‘Patola’ is famous due to the use of
pure silk and organic colour usage. As a result
it is quite expensive. In a nutshell, the trip was
enjoyable.
