Statistical Appendix
Revised insurance market figures reflect The data appendix has been updated to incorporate the latest available data. For most
that premium growth was higher than markets, definitive or at least provisional figures are now available.
previously reported.
Compared with the data compiled for sigma in May 2010, global life insurance
premium volume for 2009 was revised upwards by 1.2% (USD 27bn). Global non-life
insurance premiums were revised by 0.4% (USD 8bn).
While the main message from earlier in the year – ie total premium volume fell in real
terms - is still valid, the decline is less severe than previously reported.
In non-life, premiums for 2009 are now estimated to have grown marginally at 0.4%,
mainly due to upwards revisions in a selection of large markets - eg the UK, Germany
and Japan.
In life, the decline of premiums in the US was somewhat less severe than estimated in
the spring. The updated figures show a decline of 13%, slightly better than the
previously reported figure of -14.6%. In Europe and Japan, growth is somewhat
higher than previously estimated. According to the latest estimates, global premiums
in the life segment are only slightly negative at -0.8%, versus the previously reported
figure of -2.0%.
Growth in many emerging markets has also been revised upwards, underlining the
resilience of emerging markets.
The revised growth rates are also partly due to a basis effect, since growth and premium
volume for 2008 were revised slightly downwards due to data revisions by primary
sources.
