We Are People of the Book
By Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister
Worship I’ve been helping to teach the 4th and 5th grade Unite class on
at First Christian Wednesdays this semester. What a rewarding challenge that is.
8:15, 9 & 11am The kids ask very insightful questions and are a joy to teach. If
you ever get the chance (and I know there are many chances)
April 17, 2011 I invite you to grab an opportunity to teach sometime. I know
Palm Sunday that I always learn more teaching than I do studying for a class.
Message: Rev. Chris Shorow One of the things we have been concentrating on is
Scripture: Matthew 21:1-11 learning the books of the Bible. Seems a little trivial to learn
the books, because they’re not the important part of scripture.
April 24, 2011 The important part is what is written inside the book. But, in order to find and understand
Easter Sunday those parts, we have to come to know scripture—which includes knowing the books. I
Message: Rev. Chris Shorow am amazed at how quickly the kids are learning. Maybe it’s because we have invited all
Scripture: Matthew 28:1-10 who memorize the books to a banana split part at the end of the semester. It ought to be
a fun celebration, as we recite the books of the Bible and get chocolate sauce all over our
The Chalice CONNECTION mouths—after all, eating together is what we Christians do best.
Shelley Regan, Editor I say all of this as a reminder to all Disciples. We were founded as a people of
sregan@fccedmond.org the book. “Where the scriptures speak, we speak, where the scriptures are silent, we are
Read News Online silent,” is one of our key slogans. However, we must know scripture to speak or be silent.
@ fccedmond.org/news I invite you to one of our many Bible studies offered at the church, or to take up a habit of
Submit Articles to reading and studying scripture. And who knows, if you remember all of the books of the
Bible, you may get to come to our banana split party.
