~ INTON i!l one of the ~ . \lelous citips in Jndiana, if IIOt in the enti l'e wpst. In 1900 it hac! a population of 3,071. In
~ 1906 according to the census and the new dirt'ctor.v tigul'es it has a population of ovel' 12000. In these six .veal's it
has made the most I'emarkab .nmercial and municipal stl'ides of an.v cit.v in the gr~H.t state of Indiana. The pl'incipal reasons
for this rapia development is dup to opening of its immense bituminous coal fields, which wer'e made possiblp. by the construc-
t:')n of new railroads. Linton is located in t.he VPI',V hpart of the greatest bituminous coal fields west of Pittsburg. The coal i;;
,ot only almost inexhaustiblp in quan~it.v but it is of the highest quality of steam a.nd domestic coltl and is found in the very
best minin~ conditions. Mine labol' is the higl'e"t pr'ice labor in the stat," . Linton ha'l tilt' lat'gest p'er capita pa.v roll in Indiana.
[t has the most money pcr capita in actual cil'culation in the state, and it is all new mone.v bl'ought in hel'e every fiftel'n days to
pay fol' coal. The mone.v is dumped in by the thousH.nds of dollars daily and we can see nothing grne that we ha\'e missed. ThiS
is one of the thing;; which malH's Linton the best busines.; town in the ,.;t'lte and which is bound to make it one of the greatest ill
the west. Its population is mostly entel'prisinl!, wide-a.wake, hustling Am rican born c Iti zens. There is not a npgro in the eit.v
nor is one permitted to remain Iwre. There is not a Chinese in the city. In fact there are but few foreigners of an.v kind and
those we have are mostly of the better class, such as tire thr·ift.\' model GenTIans and till' polite and polished French. rhe cit.v
has miles of brick and McAdam streets, tine cement sidewalks everywlwre. the finpst h.\'c! rant watpr to be found in Indiana in in-
exhaustible quantities, a splpndid electric lig'ht plant, anc! a modern artificia.l gas phnt, and is now putting III a complete sanitar.v
sewer system that will touch ever.\' piece of pro[lPrtv in the city. Interurban raill'Oads are surveyed and wi ll be constt'ucted
. within the next year, rpaching all the minps within a )'adius of fift .. en miles of the city, making- t'li,; the commercial centre for
all this densely populated tprritor,\', awl enab ling the men to Jj\'e in the city and enjoy its comforts anc! go to and from their
work daily at a trifling cost. The completion of this systp,m will add thousands to its prpspnt population and rapidl.v increase the
value of property. Linton has a fine system of public schools and tl1fe~ largt', new, fine school houc;;es and strong churches and
splendid edifices in nearl.\' all thl-l denominations. The city has three well equiped modern new,.;paper and job printing plants.
Three weekly and one daily ne\\'spaper-Thp Dail.Y CIIIl-are printpd. The latte.· i" in its sixth 'year, is equiped with Mer~en
thaler machine, is the only daily in the Linton distriet and fills the place so completely that tl1Pl'e is no demand nor an opening
for another daily. The. Record and Citizen, the latter, recpntl.v started, are both up-to-date and a credit to t~H) city. All the
leading- secret and fraternal orders are strongly repl'esented ;n the cit.v. It is one 01' the greatest lodge towns in the state. The
Elks have one of the finest club rooms in th~ state. There are foul' raill'Oad systems entering the cit.v-the Illinois Central, the
Pennsylvania, the Chicago, fndianapolis & Louisville ['\[onon routp] and the Southern fndiana. It is the only city in Indiana
having four direct railroads to Chicago-three to Indianapolis, and on completion of the Souther _, Indiana, now under construc-
tioll, will have four to Indianapolis.

.. ----~-
It is ';0 situa terl that P:l.';,;"nge l''; or freight from Linton can reach Chi cago, St, Loui s, Evans ville, Louisville, Cincinnati or
Indianapolis within a few h Oll!'s, It is surrounded by one of the finest and richest agl'icu ltu ra l, stock raising and fruit g rowing
:;flctioll '; in the west, anci po~;;, sses nbur:dance of stone and timber a nd inpxhaustible beds of un developed iron ore, which will
soon be accp,;sible b,v an flxtew. ion of the Illinois Central railroad lltlmo.t com pleted, A ll the surroundin g country is covered with
free gravel road ~ , enabling' thn country peop le to reach town at any t im e. Almost eve ry farmer has ft-ee dai l,v rural route mail
se rvice a nd most of them al so have te lep hones in their homes. The ('it,v ha s a s plendid city g m7 ernment, a high class of pro-
gl'cl"si ve bu ",in ess men and moml ci tizens, Its citizenshi p will com pal'e fa vorab l.\' wi I h any ci ts of its size, It is as different
from tIl('. we,.tprn mining camps of r::)lVdies and cowboys or the eastern coal mines with t heir npgrops and da g'oes as day is from
night. It is tnlly a city o f pretty homes, fine skeets, numerous sec ret orders owning' their own homps, model free schools, and
all that g'OPS to make life worth li ving. Fortune after fortune has bef'n made here within the last few years and the city i3 only
in il s infan cy. Grt'at opportunities are now open in ever,V branch of business, ''\Te have bepn 1' 0 b usy opening our mines and
builrling' our cit,\' that we have had but li ttle time to devote to manufactori.es, The cit,\' c(:'rtain l,I' offers ,!!Teat opportunities for
th e locatiou of a.11 kind s of factories , because of its fine railroad advanta!{es, cheap fu el r ig'ht at the factory when it can always
be had without delay iil shipment, and cheap factors s ites. All these thin g's, with 151l square miles of coal un min ed, with about
10,000 ton s to the acre nl3k e it imposs ibl e to look into Linton's futur e. Tu ha zard a glle"s at its population five years henco
would ue toying with figu/'{'s, The g lad hand of welcome is extended to ~t ll g'ood citizens to come and be one of us· You will
llJalw uo rui~tak e to come to Limon, The Commercial clu b invites cl)rrespondpncc with all kinds of manufactories wh ich seek

entpl'pl'i~es will be enco urag'ed and s uch aso;; istaoce rendered as lies within our pOW!'I'. Come to Linton,
Illv estmelits made in Linton will continue t:) illcr{'ase in value as the city in cre:tscs ill wea lth and population , and it is as sure
to do thi:; as day follow s ni g· bt., No mistake can be made by investing in real {'state 01' in any kind of bus iness in Linton. If
