TECH INSERTION

Tech Insertion is the infusion of new design technology into the current production
engines. The technology will be incorporated into all new production engines for deliveries
beginning in 2007. TI upgrade kits will also be available. Analysis shows that the most
significant benefits of these kits will be seen in the high-thrust models.
Design features include a new high-pressure compressor (HPC) blade aero design,
providing improved EGT margin and fuel burn benefits. Enhanced mixing and improved cooling
in the combustor will deliver significant NOx reduction and improved durability for lower scrap
rates. High-pressure turbine low shock airfoil contour and improved cooling design result in
improved fuel burn and longer TOW (time-on-wing) through increased efficiency between high
and low pressure turbines. The low-pressure turbine nozzle incorporates improved cooling for
better durability and lower scrap rates.

Tech Insertion incorporates advanced, second-generation 3D aero. By optimizing the

airflow through the compressor, it will perform better than current 3D aero technology at
deteriorated conditions, reducing the performance deterioration over time. Additionally,
significant improvements have been incorporated into the high-pressure turbine airfoil design,
the combustor and the low-pressure turbine nozzle.

Tech Insertion Design Criteria

Requirements

- Improved cost of ownership for customers

- Seamless introduction for Airframers and airline operators
- Preserve engine interchangeability with current engine definition
- Non TI and TI engines can be operated on the same A/C
- Transparent operability for the pilot
- Identical engine operational (surge) margins
- Preserve asset value for both fleet configurations

Effects
- Maintain the same engine architecture
- Fuel Burn and Maintenance cost optimization

BENEFITS

Reduced maintenance costs: 4-12% improvement

- Increased time on wing (due to higher EGT margin)

- Fewer shop visits (due to longer time on wing)
- Reduced performance deterioration rate (improved aerodynamic design of HPC and HPT)
- No impact on shop visit cost
- Enhanced component durability

Reduced fuel burn

- SFC improved ~0.5% at cruise
- SFC improved up to 1% over life cycle due to reduced deterioration

Reduced emissions:NOX reduced 15-20%
