Gate valve design:

Maintenance-free operations / installation

Stem sealing in 3 independent areas
A) Dirt seal - wiper ring
B) 4 o-rings in nylon bearing
C) Lip seal - rubber manchette

A
For buried installations without
use of valve chambers - big cost-
B
savings can be achieved. This
however only if valve installed has
C
a maintenance - free stem sealing
system.

In AVK's design the pipeline

media can under no circumstance
reach higher than the lip seal (C),
which is resistant to chlorine etc.
4 o-rings fixed in a nylon bearing
assures no metal to metal
connection between stem and
valve bonnet. This eliminates any
risc of the valve operation getting
stuck.
Gate valve design:
Long-life time
Epoxy coating.
Electrostatically applied at approx. 260° C

Layer thickness according to DIN 30677 part 2
• 250 µ - 400 µ on flat and load bearing parts
• 150 µ  - 300 µ on convex outer edges

150 µ - 300 µ

250 µ - 400 µ

Gate valve design:
Corosion resistant and
non-leaking, resilient seated wedge:

Metal seated gate valves. Resilient seated gate valves.

Dirt preventing proper closening. Straight bore ensures flushing of
Leakage bound to happen. dirt also at low pressure level.
Eliminating riscs for leakage

Recommended wedge rubber for potable water:

EPDM (EDK-70) synthetic rubber

Rubber layer thickness recommended for ideal function:

Min. 4 mm on seating areas,
Min. 1.5 mm overall
No metal parts exposed for corrosion
Ductile iron innercore for max. strength (800 N/mm2).
Resistant to chlorine etc.
Gate valve design:
Safe operation
No blow-out of gasket under pressure, as gasket placed in
bonnet recess prevent any risc of movement,
in the bolted body/bonnet assembly.
This also eliminates risc of leakage in assembly area.
Gate valve design:
Safe operation under pressure
Fixed wedge nut in high strength material

A fixed wedge nut incorporated in the wedge - combined with supporting rail
guides in the valve body - eliminates vibrations under flow conditions - and
minimize valve failures.

Navy Brass - AVK Tensile Strength

N/mm2
CZ 132
BS 2872/2874
Free of dezincficnation 450

Composition Cu 62% - Zn 36.2% - PB 1.75% - AS 0.06%

Gun Metal - Others Tensile Strength

N/mm2
DIN 1705 RG5
BS 1400-LG2-C 240
Composition Cu 85% - Zn 5% - PB 5% - Sn 5%

Navy brass CZ 132 as used by AVK has exceptional advantages:

High strength and non-toxity.
Bronze / gunmetal as used by most valve manufacturers (excl. AVK) has low
strength. Resulting in many valve failures as the bronze wedge nut thread is
collapsing under operation (overtorque + vibrations under flow conditions).
Durability of gate valves
strength of internal parts

AVK:
Standard: Tensile strength
Tensile strength
Stem 800 N/mm2
Stem 450 N/mm2 (rolled-on thread, stainless
(turned brass / stainless) steel)

Wedge nut 250 N/mm2 Wedge nut 450 N/mm2

(bronze/gunmetal) (high tensile brass / CZ 132)

Result: AVK gate valves are almost impossible to over-torque,

due to high strength.
AVK gate valves will have far less failure rate under
throtteling.
- Throtteling means, valves being partly shut, to increase
the velocity of the pipeline media, thus increasing pressure.
Gate valve design:
Unique wedge design
- rail guides and fixed wedge nut
Rail guides on wedge and in valve body
• ensure a uniform closure irrespective of the high pressure
• no overloads of stem - therefore a more safe operation
• the series 55 (DN 450, 500, 600), valves have polyacetal shoes
on the wedge guides - to prevent wear of the rubber due to the
extensive pressure on the wedge surfaces caused by the flow

Fixed integral wedge nut

• no damaging and noising vibrations

• safe operations and long life
Gate valve design:
Safe operation
Travel stop on stem prevents
overtorque of valve by operator,
and protects the stem sealing system
