TIMING BELT PROCEDURE CLIO 1.

5 DCI 2002-2005

Removal
1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
2. Remove:
o Engine top cover.
o Bonnet.
3. Support engine. Use tool No.1453.
4. Remove:
o Engine undershield.
o Engine lower tie-bar.
NOTE: Mark position of RH engine mounting before removal.
5. Remove:
o RH engine mounting.
o RH front wheel.
o RH wheel arch liner.
o Auxiliary drive belt.
o Timing belt upper cover [1].
o High-pressure fuel pump position sensor [2].
o Timing belt lower cover [3].
o RH engine mounting bracket.
o Blanking plug from cylinder block [4].
6. Turn crankshaft clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost aligned with hole
in cylinder head [5].
7. Insert crankshaft timing pin [6]. Tool No.Mot.1489.
8. Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [6].
9. Insert camshaft timing pin [7]. Tool No.1430.
10. Remove timing pins [6] & [7].
11. Lock flywheel with large screwdriver. Slacken crankshaft pulley bolt [8].
12. Remove:
o Crankshaft pulley bolt [8].
o Crankshaft pulley [9].
13. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [1 0]. Move tensioner pulley away from belt.
14. Remove:
o Timing belt.
o Tensioner pulley.

Installation
NOTE: DO NOT refit used belt.
Fit new tensioner pulley. Finger tighten bolt [10]. Ensure tensioner pulley locking tab located correctly
in cylinder head.
1. Insert timing pins [6] & [7] .
2. Ensure crankshaft sprocket keyway at 12 o'clock position [11] .
3. Ensure high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing mark aligned as shown [12] .
4. Remove one camshaft sprocket bolt [13] . NOTE: DO NOT slacken camshaft sprocket hub nut [14] .
5. Slacken two camshaft sprocket bolts one turn [15] .
6. Fit timing belt, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure marks on belt aligned with marks on sprockets
[16], [17] & [18] . Ensure belt is taut on non-tensioned side. NOTE: There should be 19 troughs
between camshaft sprocket and high-pressure fuel pump sprocket timing marks [18] & [17] and 51
troughs between high-pressure fuel pump sprocket and crankshaft sprocket timing marks [17] & [16] .
7. Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until pointer at lower position [19] . Use 6 mm Allen key [20] .
Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Tightening torque: 27 Nm.
8. Ensure camshaft sprocket bolts not at end of slotted holes [21] .
9. Fit camshaft sprocket bolt [13] .
10. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts [13] & [15] . Tightening torque: 14 Nm.
11. Remove timing pins [6] & [7] .
12. Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley bolt with a spacer [8] .
13. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost
aligned with hole in cylinder head [5] .
14. Insert crankshaft timing pin [6] .
15. Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [6] .
16. Insert camshaft timing pin [7] .
17. If timing pin cannot be inserted [7] : Slacken camshaft sprocket bolts one turn [13] & [15] . Turn
camshaft sprocket hub nut [14] until timing pin can be inserted [7] .
18. Ensure crankshaft sprocket keyway at 12 o'clock position [11] . NOTE: Tensioner pulley pointer
can be in two positions.
19. Tensioner pulley pointer at position shown [22] : Hold tensioner pulley. Use 6 mm Allen key [23] .
Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until pointer aligned with
notch [22] & [24] . Use 6 mm Allen key [23] .
20. Tensioner pulley pointer at position shown [19] : Hold tensioner pulley. Use 6 mm Allen key [20] .
Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Turn tensioner pulley clockwise until pointer aligned with notch
[19] & [25] . Use 6 mm Allen key [20] .
21. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Tightening torque: 27 Nm.
22. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts if slackened previously [13] & [15] . Tightening torque: 14 Nm.
23. Remove timing pins [6] & [7] .
24. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost
aligned with hole in cylinder head [5] .
25. Insert crankshaft timing pin [6] .
26. Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [6] .
27. Insert camshaft timing pin [7] .
28. If timing pin cannot be inserted [7] : Repeat installation procedure.
29. Remove old crankshaft pulley bolt and spacer [8] .
30. Fit new crankshaft pulley bolt [8] .
31. Lock flywheel with large screwdriver.
32. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [8] . Tightening torque: 120 Nm + 95°±15°.
33. Remove timing pins [6] & [7] .
34. Fit blanking plug [4] . Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
35. Install components in reverse order of removal.

8. Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [6].
9. Insert camshaft timing pin [7]. Tool No.1430.
10. Remove timing pins [6] & [7].
11. Lock flywheel with large screwdriver. Slacken crankshaft pulley bolt [8].
12. Remove:
o Crankshaft pulley bolt [8].
o Crankshaft pulley [9].
13. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [1 0]. Move tensioner pulley away from belt.
14. Remove:
o Timing belt.
o Tensioner pulley.

Installation

10. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts [13] & [15] . Tightening torque: 14 Nm.
11. Remove timing pins [6] & [7] .

13. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost
aligned with hole in cylinder head [5] .
14. Insert crankshaft timing pin [6] .
15. Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [6] .
16. Insert camshaft timing pin [7] .
17. If timing pin cannot be inserted [7] : Slacken camshaft sprocket bolts one turn [13] & [15] . Turn
camshaft sprocket hub nut [14] until timing pin can be inserted [7] .
18. Ensure crankshaft sprocket keyway at 12 o'clock position [11] . NOTE: Tensioner pulley pointer
can be in two positions.
19. Tensioner pulley pointer at position shown [22] : Hold tensioner pulley. Use 6 mm Allen key [23] .
Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until pointer aligned with
notch [22] & [24] . Use 6 mm Allen key [23] .
20. Tensioner pulley pointer at position shown [19] : Hold tensioner pulley. Use 6 mm Allen key [20] .
Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Turn tensioner pulley clockwise until pointer aligned with notch
[19] & [25] . Use 6 mm Allen key [20] .
21. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [10] . Tightening torque: 27 Nm.
22. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts if slackened previously [13] & [15] . Tightening torque: 14 Nm.
23. Remove timing pins [6] & [7] .
24. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing pin locating hole almost
aligned with hole in cylinder head [5] .
25. Insert crankshaft timing pin [6] .
26. Turn crankshaft slightly until crankshaft web stops against timing pin [6] .
27. Insert camshaft timing pin [7] .
28. If timing pin cannot be inserted [7] : Repeat installation procedure.
29. Remove old crankshaft pulley bolt and spacer [8] .
30. Fit new crankshaft pulley bolt [8] .
31. Lock flywheel with large screwdriver.
32. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [8] . Tightening torque: 120 Nm + 95°±15°.
33. Remove timing pins [6] & [7] .
34. Fit blanking plug [4] . Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
35. Install components in reverse order of removal.
