How to use Mapinfo to create thematic map to analyze DT

result by TEMS

Step1: Export logfile

The file that TEMS logs is end with *.log, we need to transfer it to the format which Mapinfo
can open first.
Open TEMS Investigation Data Collection, choose Logfile -> Export Logfile, press Add order
button, the Add Export Order window will come out.

1. To choose the file format that we want to export to, we choose Mapinfo Tab-file here.
2. To setup the content we want to export. Because TEMS will log all the data when we do
the DT, but we don’t need to analyze all of them, here we just select the IEs that we need.
Choose GSM from Available IEs column, then select RxLev, RxQual, SQI, etc.
After we finish setup, we can choose Save to save this template to a *.mex file. We just
Load this *.mex file next time, but no need to setup again.

3. To choose the logfile we want to export. We can choose all the files we need but not only
one.
4. If we choose some logfiles, but want to output only one Mapinfo file, we should choose
this Merge output.
5. To choose the path we want to export the Mapinfo file.
After all, we can press OK, and then press Start button.
Step2: Create RxLev thematic map
Open the Tab file we get from step1 with Mapinfo, we will see the map all in green color, this
is because this map includes all the IEs we choose in step1. We need to separate them by
creating thematic map.
Choose Map -> Create Thematic Map, or press F9.

Choose Ranges, then choose any template from Template list, because we will change it later
however. Press Next.

Choose the file we get in step1 from Table column, choose the theme we need from Field
column. Here we choose RxLevSubdBm to analyze RxLev. Then Next.

Now we need to define the map we want, including Ranges, Styles and Legend.

Ranges: Here we define the ranges of RxLev according to the request of operator or project
team. MTN Nigeria for example, we need 4 ranges: -60 to 0dBm, -85 to -60dBm, -94 to

-85dBm, -110 to -94dBm. So we choose Custom in the Method column, and then choose 4 in
the # of Ranges column, and then write the Min and Max value of each Range. Press Recalc,
press OK.

Styles: Here we define how our map looks like. Choose All Attributes first to let us able to
define what ever we want, then press each symbol to setup the shape, color and size in the
new window. Usually, we use solid circular point. Choose the size and color you like, but it is
better that all the reports in one project keeping the same style. Press OK.

Legend: Here we define the legend, including Title and Label. One thing to be careful, when
we export Mapinfo file with TEMS, there maybe some no sampling points generate, these
points are useless to us, so we should not choose Show this Range for all others. Press OK.

Then, we can choose Save As to save our template, so that next time we will not setup again.
After all, we press OK to get RxLev map. We can see RxLev distribution clearly.

It is the same way to create RxQual, SQI, C/I thematic maps, etc. What we need is just to
setup different Ranges.
Besides analyzing DT result, Create Thematic Map has other powerful functions, such as
manage the site information. However, we should study and practice more to use Mapinfo.
