1.3 Benefits of the BTS3900

The indoor macro BTS3900 adopts the unified module design, and thus allows
multiple radio access technologies (RATs) in one cabinet. It is small in size and light in
weight, and supports smooth evolution to the Long Term Evolution (LTE).

1.3.1 Efficient Site Usage and Fast Networking

l The BTS3900 is one of the most compact macro base stations in the industry with
the footprint of only 600 mm x 450 mm; thus meeting the space requirements of
the operator for site acquisition and equipment room construction.
l The BTS3900 has a streamlined modular structure. The part assembly and
disassembly are easy and fast.

1.3.2 Cost-Effective Solutions for Capacity and Coverage

l A DRFU provides two TRXs. The transmit power on top of the cabinet per TRX is
up to 45 W for GSM900 or 71 W for GSM900 in Power Boost Technology (PBT)
mode.
l A GRFU provides up to six TRXs. The transmit power on top of the cabinet per
TRX is up to 60 W for GSM900. With excellent performance, the BTS3900
guarantees wide coverage and high throughput, and helps minimize the number
of sites.
l The BTS3900 supports two-way receive diversity, four-way receive diversity
(DRFU), transmit diversity(DRFU), and PBT(DRFU). Therefore, the uplink
coverage and downlink coverage are enhanced.
l The TMA can be configured for the BTS3900 to improve the receive sensitivity.

1.3.3 Green Communication Design

l The BTS3900 adopts the innovative technology in management on power
amplification and power consumption. The occupation on resources, such as the
equipment room and energy resources, is minimized.
l Compared with traditional macro BTSs, the integrated BTS3900 cabinet has the
power consumption reduced by 8%. Therefore, the power rate and the cost on
related devices, such as power equipment, batteries, air conditioner, and heat
exchanger, are reduced accordingly.

1.3.4 Reliable OM with Minimized OPEX

l The BTS3900 can share the BBU, RFU, and power system with other products of
the same BTS family. Thus, the cost in production, transportation, and OM is
reduced.
l The BTS3900 features the streamlined structure design, separated installation of
the BBU and DRFU/GRFU, and assembled modules. The transportation,
configuration, and installation become easy. As a result, the difficulty and cost in
network construction for the telecom operator are minimized.
l No crane is needed because the BTS3900 cabinet weights only 57 kg.
l All the modules in the BTS3900 are easily accessible from the front of the cabinet,
which reduces the maintenance expense.

6 Reliability

6.1 System Reliability

The BTS3900 improves the system reliability by adopting the design of load sharing
and redundancy configuration, and optimizing the technique of detecting/isolating the
faults on the board and in the system.
l Redundancy configuration
The transmission, power supply, and fan units in the system support redundancy
configuration, and the BBU supports load sharing.
The BBU and DRFUs/GRFUs form a ring. When a DRFU/GRFU in the ring fails,
anticlockwise switchover is performed; thus greatly improving the system
reliability.
Crucial system data such as software releases and data configuration files, is
backed up to ensure the normal system operation in case of data corruption.
l Reliability
The BTS3900 system can automatically detect and diagnose the faults in the
software and hardware, and reports the fault alarms. In addition, the BTS3900
can monitor the environment and report environment alarms.

6.2 Hardware Reliability

l Overcurrent protection
The power system of the BBU and DRFU/GRFU is protected against overcurrent,
improper insertion, and inverse insertion.
l Overtemperature protection
The BBU and DRFU/GRFU are protected against high temperature. When the
internal temperature is high, the system automatically performs power derating or
switches off the power amplifier based on the current temperature. When the
temperature reverts to the normal value, the system increases the power level or
switches on the power amplifier.
l Monitoring mechanism
The BBU can monitor the environment and report alarms.
l Stable power supply

6.3 Software Reliability

Software reliability is guaranteed through data redundancy and powerful error
tolerance.

6.3.1 Data Redundancy

Important files, such as software releases and configuration files, and crucial system
data are backed up to ensure the normal system operation in case of data corruption.
l Redundancy of software releases
The system backs up the software releases, including the BOOTROM, in different
partitions. When a software release is faulty, the backup release can be used.
l Redundancy of data configuration files
The system backs up the data configuration files in different partitions. When the
running data configuration files are corrupted, the backup data configuration files
can be used.
l Redundancy of the operation logs
The system records the user operations in a certain period and backs up the
information in the operation logs. When the system incurs an unknown error, the
maintenance personnel can locate the problem by tracing back to the normal
status, or perform the data restoration.

6.3.2 Error Tolerance

The error-tolerance ability prevents the system crash due to the software error. That is,
the system has the self-healing ability. The capabilities of the software in error
tolerance are as follows:
l Scheduled detection on the crucial resources
Usage check is performed on the software in the system to release the
suspended software resources, and generate logs and alarms.
l Task monitoring
During the software running, the monitoring process monitors all the tasks. When
an error occurs in the software or the hardware is faulty, the monitoring process
reports alarms and attempts to restore the normal running of the software.
l Data check
The system checks data consistency on a regular or an event-triggering basis,
restores data consistency selectively or preferably, and generates related logs
and alarms.

B Glossary

A
Abis interface An interface between the BSC and the BTS.
Antenna A device that performs conversion between the electricity energy and the
magnetic energy. It is used to radiate and collect radio waves. In transmission, it
converts the high-frequency current to the electromagnetic wave; in reception, it
converts the electromagnetic wave to the high-frequency current.

B
Baseband A form of modulation in which the information is applied directly onto the physical
transmission medium.
BSS Base station system. A system comprises BSCs and the BTSs under the BSCs.
The BSS is controlled by the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) and communicates
with the MS in the radio coverage area.
BTS Base transceiver station. The mobile communications system consists of the MS,
BSS, and the NSS. The BSS consists of the BTS and the base station controller
(BSC).

C
A sine wave, whose bandwidth is much higher than the bandwidth of a signal
Carrier
and, which can be identified by amplitude, frequency, and phase.

D
Double-transceiver A mode in which a board provides two TRXs.

HUAWEI BTS3900 GSM V300R008
Product Description

EDGE Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution. A mobile telephony technology for
enhanced data based on the GSM/GPRS network. It is also called the 2.75
generation technology. As a high-speed mobile data standard that remarkably
improves the efficiency of the GPRS channel encoding, EDGE allows the data
rate up to 384 kbit/s; thus fully meeting the broadband requirements of radio
multi-media applications in the future.

F
Transmit diversity A method to realize the man-made multi-path which optimizes the downlink
signals.

G
GPRS General Packet Radio Service. A new mobile data service available to almost
every GSM system. It is a connectivity solution based on Internet Protocols that
supports a wide range of end-to-end and WAN applications. GPRS is a
technology between the second (2G) and third (3G) generations of mobile
telephony, which combines the mobile communication and the data network and
introduces the IP technology into the GSM network.
GSM The Global System for Mobile Communications is originally developed as a
pan-European standard for digital mobile telephony. GSM has become the
world's most widely used mobile system. It is used on the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz,
and 1900 MHz frequencies with the transmission rate as 9.6 kbit/s.

H
A transfer of a user’s connection from one radio channel to another (can be the
Handover
same or different cells).

R
The most common type of diversity, where a mobile device uses two physically
separate antennas to combine signals from the two antennas to reduce the
Receive diversity
impact of spatial variations in signal strength and thus increase the average data
rate available - sometimes dramatically.

S
SDH Synchronous Digital Hierarchy. A communication transmission standard defined
by the ITU-T. It is derived from the Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy (PDH).

T
TMA Tower Mounted Amplifier. A low noise amplifier installed close to the antenna.
Transceiver. An entity that serves up to eight TCHFs in full-duplex mode. If the
TRX
low-speed FH is not used, a transceiver serves one RF carrier.
