Linearity of equipment gain

Equipment
Flaw detector – Sonatest D – 10 (SN I003211)
Calibration block – A2 or A4

Standard
BS EN 12668 – 3:2000

1. Placed a probe on a calibration block to obtain a reflected signal from a


small reflector i.e. 1.5mm hole in A2 block.
2. Set the signal to 80% FSH and note the gain setting.
3. Increase the gain by 2dB and check the amplitude increase to 100% FSH.
4. Reduced by 2dB and the amplitude should be back to 80% FSH.
5. Reduced by 6dB and record the amplitude
6. Reduced by further 6dB and check it goes down to 20% FSH.
7. Reduced as before by another 6dB and the reading will goes down to
10%FSH.
8. Finally reduce again by another 6dB and it will give 5%FSH

Time base linearity

Equipment

Probe : Compression probe - 0⁰

Standard : BS EN 12668 – 3

Method :
1. Placed the compression probe on the A2 block (25mm) and adjust Range
and Delay until its display 10 BWEs.
2. Adjust the control to make sure that the first and last echoes coincide with
the correct scale mark.
3. Increased each successive backwall echoes to 80% FSH and assure that the
leading edge line up with appropriate graticule mark.
4. Any deviation at approximately half screen height will be recorded and it
should be expressed as percentage of the range between the first and last
echoes displayed.

Results :
 A tolerance of ±2%considered acceptable as per BS EN 12668 – 3

 To detect defect/discontinuity in parent metal and weld body also Heat
Affected Zone – HAZ.

 Parent metal at maximum full skip of all angle probe
 Weld body + HAZ
Personnel :
 CSWIP UT level 1 or others that comply to EN473.
 All indication must be confirmed by supervisor or level 2 personnel.
Safety :
 Correct PPE should be worn
 Surface temperature of test piece should not exceed 50⁰C
 Test piece must be situated and accessible

 4MHz twin crystal compression probe – 0⁰ , 10mm diameter

1. Scanning surface shall be in uniform contour and free from loose scale and
weld spatter.
