MODAL MAKES THE WORLD A SOFTER PLACE

“Regenerated cellulose, high tensile strength, bright, soft, noble”

A generic name for a modified rayon fiber that has high tenacity and
high wet modulus. Modal fibers were initially developed in the
1930's for industrial uses in tires, conveyor belts and hose pipes.
Changes in the rayon processing, such as the spin conditions,
chemical solutions and stretching sequences, produced rayon fibers
with increased crystalline and thus, greater strength. Modal fibers
are dimensionally stable and do not shrink or get pulled out of
shape when wet like many rayon. They are also wear resistant and
strong while maintaining a soft, silky feel. Modal fibers have found a
wide variety of uses in clothing, outwear and household furnishings.
It can also be used in place of cotton for producing polyester
filament core yarn for sewing threads.

Modal is a processed bio-based textile made from reconstituted

cellulose from the beech tree. It is very soft and popular for both
clothing and household textiles such as bedding, upholstery, and
towels. Modal may be used on its own or in a blend with cotton,
spandex, or other textiles. In many ways, modal acts like cotton, but
it also has some significant advantages over cotton. Moreover Modal
requires low utilization of land and water during production. Cotton
requires up to 10 times more water than Modal®

Modal is considered a type of rayon. Like other types of rayon,

originally marketed as "artificial silk," modal is soft, smooth and
breathes well. Its texture is similar to that of cotton or silk. It is cool
to the touch and very absorbent. Like cotton, modal dyes easily and
becomes color-fast after submersion in warm water.

One of the advantages of modal over cotton is its resistance to

shrinkage, a notorious problem with cotton. Modal is also less likely
to fade or to form pills as a result of friction. It is about 50% more
hygroscopic, or water-absorbent, per unit volume than cotton is. It is
designed to dye just like cotton, and is color-fast when washed in
warm water.

Modal® absorbs dyes fast, with a deep and sustainable penetration,

so that your colors can shine. The smooth surface of the fiber
creates a silky, brilliant luster which even surpasses the visual effect
of mercerized cotton. Modal® makes colors radiant. Even after 25
washes, the colors remain brilliant and strong. Greying, as with 100
% cotton textiles, does not occur.

Sewing threads manufactured using Modal or Lyocell fibre makes an

interesting alternative to 100% cotton sewing threads. The
characteristics and extraordinary properties of the Modal or Lyocell
fibre permit the manufacture of sewing threads that provide
extraordinary performance and behaviour in the production of all
types of garments. For medium to high end markets, Modal, Lyocell
and ProModal is increasingly used in place of cotton as cover fiber
for producing high tenacity polyester core spun yarns for sewing
threads.
