KEY FACTS: APP & BIODIVERSITY

OVERVIEW
APP is committed to the protection and conservation of all endangered wildlife, indigenous species and
fauna throughout Indonesia. In addition to the sustainable management of pulpwood plantations, APP
supports a number of large wildlife projects in areas of high biodiversity.

In fact, APP can proudly state that no other SENEPIS SUMATRAN TIGER

MAN RAJA NATURE PRESERVE
Taman Raja is a forest concession consisting of more than 16,400
hectares in Jambi Province, Sumatra. It includes 6,800 hectares
inhabited by several local communities and 6,000 hectares of
natural forest rich in vital biodiversity and social value. To protect
this valuable land, APP’s pulpwood suppliers teamed up with local
NGOs to establish the Taman Raja Nature Preserve.

The key feature of the Nature Preserve is a wildlife corridor that links
it to Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park. This has greatly improved efforts
to conserve the Sumatran Tigers that inhabit the area, as well as
other indigenous species.

KUTAI ORANGUTAN PROGRAM

IN KALIMANTAN
The Kutai National Park in East Kalimantan is one of the last
remaining strongholds of the Bornean Orangutan. The park suffered
extensive damage during the 1997 El Nino fires that swept through
Kalimantan.

In 2007, APP and its pulpwood supplier Surya Hutani Jaya began
exploring options that would ensure the survival of the orangutan
while providing for the economic viability of the plantation.

Applying best practices in orangutan conservation management,

APP established a wildlife corridor that linked Surya Hutani Jaya’s
sustainable plantation forest with Kutai National Park (about
200,000 hectares) and the Muara Kaman Natural Reserve (about
65,000 hectares). As a result, the Bornean Orangutan has a safe
place to call home.
