Description: Cemetery is on a hillside near parking lot for C&O Canal Park. See map in file.
Stones are scattered on hillside. 1 artfully carved stone for Matthew Rayner and several cruder
fieldstones with initials. Others are uncarved fieldstones.
Comments: Listed in the National Register as contributing to the Washington Aqueduct National
Register Property. See transcriptions and drawingins of stones in file

Description: One large uncarved stone. Larger than most fieldstones and roughly squared at
edges. Located in woods about 100 feet south of path down to Rock Creek. On property
formerly owned by National Park Seminary and prior to that was a tobacco plantation.

Description: Information from phone conversation with Eunice Walker, owner. Remains from
the family cemetery of George W. Walker were moved to Bethesda United Methodist Church
cemetery in Browningsville.

Description: Mrs. Ann Pritchard, owner of house from 1940s-1983 said she moved headstones
out of the roadway when I-270 was being constructed in 1950s. She took them off their bases
and relocated them to her backyard.
Comments: The relocated stones are for Lawrence Ball, d. June 10, 1855 and Eliza Ball, d. Nov.
24, 1862.

Description: Ann Posey's 1845 will states that she is to be buried in the burying ground on Peter
D. Posey's farm. Will Abstracts Liber JWA-1 folio 40. Posey lived in Bethesda area just south of
Goldsboro Road between River Road and Little Falls.

Description: Will of Mary Plummer states that her administrator was to erect tombstones for her
parents and sister, Sarah Plummer and John C. Got and enclose burial grounds, which was on
land belonging to Leonard I. Hays.

Comments: Record at MC Historical Society says headstone for Major William Hempstone (Rev
War) was moved to Monocacy Cemetery, but only a stone for Armistead Hempstone was found.

Description: Cemetery on Keith-Pearre farm off Comus Road. Stones were removed after
Chestnut trees harvested from burial ground. Supposedly Laura Jane Nicholson Keith, wife of
James N. Keith was buried here. Behind Pearre House on Comus Road near Slidell Road

Description: Not located. Major Richard Green and wife Sarah were on a farm owned by Joseph
Janney near Brookeville. Deeds for property in this area do not refer to a cemetery.
Comments: Current owner of 1201 Gold Mine Road does not know of a cemetery in the area.

Description: William L. Claggett was buried in the family burying ground on the Briggs Farm
near Gaithersburg. Claggetts and Briggs were inter-married. See Genealogical Abstracts and

Description: This empty field shows no evidence of burials. There probably never were
gravemarkers.

Description: According to owner, P.G. Etchison owned all surrounding land until c. 1880 when
Hiltons bought part. Owned by Hilton-Snyders since then but they are not buried here. Only
known burials are children of P.G. Etchison.
Comments: Located about 75 yards off right front corner of historic Etchison House. Somewhat
overgrown although current owner does maintain it. He remembers 5 or 6 stones as a child; 3
visible now (and 1 footstone) See transcriptions in file.

believed to have been moved to Monocacy Cemetery.
