KIRAN 2003

Computer Events
There were 8 computer events in all and 2 workshops.

Day 1

Event: Brain Chewers

Time: 10:00am
As the opening ceremony got delayed, most of the events on day 1 got delayed including
Brain Chewers. Participants started pouring in around 9:45 and we started registrations.
But we could not start the event until the opening ceremony took place. At 11:00 we got
the word about the official start of event and so we started the Elimination round of Brain
Chewers. It was a fast round. Only one round of written questions were to be solved by
the participants. As soon as the Elims got over we immediately announced the results and
started the Finals in the next 10 minutes. Kshitija, Saloni and Madhavi had prepared the
whole format. Kshitija was the Scorekeeper and Madhavi was the Quizmaster (even
though she had a sore throat.). There were 4 rounds in the finals with 4 teams made it to
the finals. 1st was a normal Question and Answer round. The next round was a visual
round where the participants were asked a question based on a visual clue. Round 3, the
most interesting round, was a challenge round, where a team, which was asked the
question, had to challenge some other team. The 4th and last round was a timed round.
There were 13 registered participants with 3 OTSEs. College No. 41 secured 1st place.
2nd by College No. 23 and 3rd by College No.38
Just as the Finals of Brain Chewers began so did the Digi I workshop on 3 rd floor. A few
volunteers left for preparations in room no. 301

Day 2

Event: PowerZone
Time 10:30am
We had started preparing for Gaming event 1 day prior to KIRAN. Yet we had to make
last minute decisions due to incompatibility of the preinstalled Operating Systems. We
had planned to keep 5 different games for the rounds but as some of them did not work
we had to make changes in our plans. There was a huge crowd (as expected) for
Computer Gaming. There were some 48 registrants and 7 OTSEs. In the Elims we had
Unreal Tournament – Death Match! 4 Participants were played against each other and
only the lone survivor was chosen for the Finals. There 4 qualifiers for the Finals. For the
Finals we had 3D Pool, Half Life – CounterStrike and Unreal Tournament. The Finals led
to a tie for the 1st Position. We had to have a tiebreaker of 3 rounds of Unreal Tournament
– Death Match! The First two rounds were one-sided to each team. But the last tiebreaker
was the most interesting with both teams one step ahead of the other. Though it was
supposed to get over at 1:00 gaming got over at 4:30, with no regrets from any of the
participants. The winner was from College No. 41. 2nd being College no. 9.

Event: Screen Saver Making

Time: 1:00pm
As PowerZone had to be extended due to the huge response, we started Screen Saver
Making alongside in the inner lab. We started the event by 1:30 after the registrations
took place. We had 14 registered participants of which 4 were absent. We easily
accommodated all of them in the inner lab. The topic being Paradise, we had given the
participants some resources and an hour of Internet Access to search for more resources if
they wished. They had to make a screensaver using the provided softwares and those
resources in 2½ hours. Points were allotted on the basic of appearance, efficiency,
content and quality by the judge.

Day 3

Event: Mad Ad Making

Time: 10:30am
Even though there were 10 registered participants with 1 OTSE, 4 participants were
absent. The participants had to design an Ad based on product information and product
logo we had provided them with. Our chosen product was Red Bull. In 2 ½ hours the
participants had to design an innovative and apt ad. In the Ad they had to include
information on the product and had to be different from regular ads. Later, our judge, Mr.
Karandikar, gave us all some nice ideas and tips on how Ads could grasp the attention of
the average customer. As the Ad Making event got over the results were declared with 1 st
place to college No. 9 and 2nd also to college no 9 (OTSE) and 3rd was secured by College
No. 35. Meanwhile we were preparing for the Code Maze event.

Event: Search till you drop

Time: 1:30pm
We registered participants for the code-debugging event at around 1:15. There were 10
Registered participants and 6 OTSEs. Considering that this was a purely computer based
programming event, we had more participants than we had expected. In this event we had
provided the participants with a pre-written code, which had a few errors in them. They
were required to correct this code to make it work properly and more efficient. They
could choose from a choice of 5 different languages. Java, JavaScript, C, C++, and Visual
Basic. The pre-written code was of Magic Squares. Magic squares involves an odd
numbered square checkerboard with numbers on each square. The sum of each row and
each column has to be the same. The program had to generate these numbers according to
the number of rows input by the user. 1st place was secured by a participant from college
No. 41, 2nd by College no. 34 and 3rd by College No. 9. Our Judges, Mr. Ayaz Zanzeria
from Wipro Spectrum Pvt. Ltd. and Mr. Arjun Rajput from Wilson College gave all the
participants important ideas and points to remember while writing programs and making
team projects.

Event: Music Raga

Time: 4:30pm
Out of the 7 registered participants, 4 didn’t turn up. In this event the participants were
given a few clips of instrumental music. In around 2 hours they had to Mix-n-match the
clips to make a 2-minute clip on the computer. Our judge was DJ Nilesh who played the
