CHAPTER 2: BLOOD CIRCULATION AND TRANSPORT
1. The human transport system is known as the
_____________________________________________________________________________.
2. It is made up of __________________________________, ____________________________________
and ___________________________.
3. The function of the heart is to
__________________________________________________________________________________________.
4. There are 3 types of blood vessels, namely a. artery = carries blood
________________________ from the heart;
b. vein = carries blood _______________________ the
heart;
c. capillary = connects the _______________________ to the
________________________.
5. The blood is a tissue. It consists of 2 parts namely the yellowish liquid called
__________________ and the blood cells.
There are 3 types of blood cells namely ___________________________,
__________________________ and _______________________.
6. Oxygenated blood differs from deoxygenated blood in characteristics and content.
Complete the table about by referring to page 20 of your text book.

The atria contracts.
During the systole phase, the atria relax and the ventricles 4
contract pushing the blood out.
Systol The cuspid valves close producing the ‘lup’ sound and prevent
e back flow into the atria.
phase The ventricles relax and the semi-lunar valves close producing the
‘dupp’ sound.
The semi-lunar valves open and the blood flows into either the
pulmonary artery or aorta.

5. A healthy heart is important to maintain a healthy body. A person with a weak heart
would not be able to do heavy work or carry out strenuous activities. Health problems
such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), stroke and heart
attack are the results of an unhealthy heart.

Below are some steps to a healthy heart.

a. Eat a diet of more _________________________ and less ______________________ and
maintain a healthy weight;
b. Exercise at least ____________ times every week for ______________ minutes to built a
stronger heart and reduce the chances of heart disease, as well as burn fat and
calories.
c. A diet high in cholesterol (animal fat) and trans fat (plant oils) will cause the lumen of
the blood vessels to ___________________. This will eventually result in a block and may
cause a heart attack.
d. Do not _______________ or use tobacco products as it would narrow the arteries
(atherosclerosis).
