indiferent de voința lui, el fiind obiectul și mai puțin subiectul acestei bătălii. Dacă ar fi vrut el, nici n-ar fi lăsat-o să
se desfășoare, cu hotărâre ar fi oprit-o din timp, s-ar fi folosit de toate relațiile sale ca să nu-și lase adversarii să
câștige. Ar fi fost pur și simplu suficient să se știe că el se preocupă de această bătălie, că e prezent în ea, că
urmărește tot ce se face și se discută. Nu pentru că D.V. n-ar fi putut în nici o circumstanță să fie doborât, dar
loviturile ar fi trebuit să vină din altă parte, să fie implicate alte forțe decât cele locale. Deși nu era omul care să
poată fi ușor distrus, l-au făcut să lupte cu mai multă disperare decât socotiseră că va fi nevoie. Era convins că, după
ce va ieși învingător, nimeni nu va mai îndrăzni niciodată să se opună planurilor sale. Acum, totuși, trăia un moment

 Dealurile se ridicau ca niște ziduri întunecate în fața lui. Se iviră apoi, unul câte unul, și
focurile băieților ieșiți cu vitele la pășune, și iar se vedea cetatea, care acum stătea în zarea
roșiatică a unui foc mare, ca o mogâldeață nemișcată.
Era înspre miezul nopții când ieși din holde și apuca drumul cel mare. Era dus cu gândul
departe înainte, și de câte ori vedea cetatea înaintea sa îi părea că n-a plecat încă și iar mai
îndemna caii la pas iute. În cele din urmă începu să moțăie, și caii, obosiți și ei, simțind că li se
slobod frâiele, o deteră în pas domol de tot.
Apropiindu-se de sat, deodată se trezi din oboseală. De mult îi păruse că aude așa, din
când în când, și cimpoi, și ceteră, și fluier, și chiote zburdalnice. Trecând un pod de piatră, i se
iviră și focurile de la marginea satului, dimpreună cu lumea ce se înghesuia prin zarea lor. Sări în
picioare ca să vadă mai bine, apoi strânse frâiele și lovi cu biciul între cai, iar aceștia, nedeprinși
cu biciul, își luară zăbalele în dinți și se întinseră drumului, încât oamenii de la focuri, speriați de
goana lor, grăbiră din toate părțile să li se pună în drum.
