7401ENG Air Quality Monitoring and Control Maruf Mahmood

Assignment 1 St No. 2770719

Introduction:
According to the local requirements, a particulate emission from a circular stack has
to be annually monitored. As our company has been commissioned to perform the
test according to the procedures recommended by Queensland Environmental
Protection Agency, I performed all tests on behalf of my company. To perform the
tests I used the following methods to obtain the results as it is recommended by
Queensland Environmental Protection Agency.

• Gas velocity of the stack: Victorian EPA Method B4

• Location of traverse points of a circular stack: USEPA Method 1

• Temperature of Gas: BS 1041 Part 4 “Guide to selection and use of

thermocouples”.

• Water Vapour Concentration: USEPA Method 4

• Particulates concentration: USEPA Method 5

The following parameters were obtained

• Diameter of the stack

• Stack diameters downstream from flow disturbance

• Stack diameters upstream from flow disturbance

• Dew Point

• CO2 Concentration

• Static Pressure

• Sampling time

• Filter weight before the procedure

• Filter weight after the procedure

• Average temperature

• Velocity pressure at traverse point

• Diameter of the nozzle to obtain sampling flowrate to ensure isokinetic

conditions.

Conclusion and recommendation:

In the first recommendation, I used 40 C as my normal temperature to convert
velocity pressure (Kilopascal) at traverse points to mm of H2O.

In the second recommendation for normalised cubic meter, I used 200 C and 101.3
kPa as my normal condition.

According to the parameters, diagrams, graphs, tables and the formulae that I have
used for these tests, I think the results I have obtained are realistic. According to the
result I have got a very low particle concentration in the exhaust gas under normal
condition.
