Improvements proudly unveiled

at Hoole’s Alexandra Park
A £70,000 improvement
scheme at Alexandra
Park, Hoole, has been
given an official seal of
approval.
Work has taken place some
time ago to sort out drainage
problems and new play
equipment has been installed
which can be used by able
bodied and disabled children.
There is also a football area
with an artificial pitch and
exercise equipment for adults
which consists of a rowing
machine and a Skywalker
which exercises legs.
Children from Abbey Gate
School and Dorin Park School
worked with designers who
asked them what they wanted
to see in the park.
Assistant Executive Member
for Culture and Recreation, Councillor Bob Crompton, said: “This popular Edwardian Park
will, I am sure, remain a firm favourite with local people, and the work which has been
carried out will add to its popularity.”
The works were funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council and a grant of £28,000 from
WREN – a not for profit business that awards grants to community projects across the UK
on behalf of the Waste Recycling Group (WRG).
Hoole and Newton Councillor, Bob Thompson, said: “Residents of Hoole are very proud
of Alexandra Park and the additional play equipment will be enjoyed by young and old
alike. Park enthusiasts also enjoy its many historical features which include mature trees,
sandstone walls and paths network.”
Added Hoole and Newton Councillor John Ebo: “Work on the park was completed some
time ago and the official signing off is taking place as we look forward to long summer days
when the equipment and play areas will be well used by park visitors.”

HOOLE RANGERS FC
Hoole Rangers 1st team have unfortunately dropped into the relegation zone. Despite
some excellent performances in April against higher placed opposition, we have struggled
to keep clean sheets, and score the goals that our performance justifies. However, we are
only one point from safety, so hope we can finish the season with a flourish, and retain our
Premiership status.
On a brighter note, Hoole Rangers reserves have finished their season on a high. Another
victory early April set up a nail-biting final game against Cestrian Alex, with us needing
a point to avoid relegation. The game started badly, and at half time we were 2-0 down.
However a spirited fightback in the second half saw us score 2 goals and gain a well
deserved draw. The young players have really developed and we are looking forward with
some excitement towards next season.
We continue to train on Tuesdays from 6-8pm at New Scene having now moved onto the
grassed areas. Although registration for this season is now closed, we would welcome any
new players who want to come down and train, with a view to signing next season.

Some thoughts about Hoole by Andy Medcraft
B
orn out of the two days of sun that
some are already fobbing off as our
summer, I leapt into the yard, dug
up everything that the frost had killed
and set about replanting. My mission
this year is to make something of the yard
and actually spend some time in it. It’s
certainly no sun trap but it’s tidy and quite
attractive.
Every time I finished re-potting I whipped out
the mobile, snapped a quick picture and emailed
it over to my mum for her approval. My slightly
green thumbed landscaping attempts are a result
of a gene picked up from my mother, who’s own
gardening skills have Kew quaking in their boots.
Once I had swept up the last of the overspill, I sat
back to admire my handy work. Perfect. However,
the following day, having watered my new babies
I was aware of just how cold it was. By Wednesday
the heating was back on and by Thursday I was
beginning to doubt I’d get any benefit from my
labours now that I was sat in the front room
with a duvet drinking coffee and watching Alan
Titchmarsh. It would appear that even Alan has
turned his back on the gardening world now that
he’s been attracted to the warmth of a prime time
slot on ITV. Where was my inspiration?
Having facebooked my endeavours it was
suggested that the answer to my woes was a
chiminea. Not convinced, and with images of
the late great Michael Jackson’s chimp in mind, I
googled the thing and found that they were indeed
the answer to my woes. Funky looking ceramic
patio heaters ranging in price from £40 to £140.
That weekend I tracked one down on ebay, bid
and won it for £25. I love a bargain. A saving of £5
is much better than a poke in the eye. And it was
‘cash on collection’ so I was saving on the postage
too. I then spent £5 in petrol picking it up and
noticed that the ‘cash on collection’ route took me
straight past Sainsbury’s and with a rumble in my
stomach I was another £25 quid down on various
items that looked great when I was hungry but
lost their appeal after the third hot cross bun and

By Monday the chiminea had settled into the
yard. Like a proud father I took a picture of it and
returned to the warmth of the house to post it on
facebook. A few of my American ‘friends’ (and I
use the word ‘friends’ loosely as I have never met
any of them but thanks to the power of ‘poking’
I now have an extended family of about 30 of
them) have fallen in love with my descriptions
of Hoole and, having now mentioned that I am
the proud owner of a wood burning patio heater,
they imagine a romantic scene of me chopping
wood and sitting amongst the sweet peas with
snow white and the seven dwarfs all toasting
marshmallows and singing God Save the Queen.
It was at this stage I realised I’d turned into a
blogging idiot. While I was being bored to tears
by pictures of baby’s first step, baby’s first smile
and baby’s first poo I had substituted my own lack
of baby with my backyard!
But with 30 odd people all commenting and
giving my latest addition to the backyard the
thumbs up I knew I wasn’t alone. Having done
a bit of research I was surprised that there are
more garden blogs than weeds growing in the
great global online herbaceous boarders of the
world wide web. It would appear that the best way
to finish off a busy day in the garden is to write
about it! So, not wanting to kill the illusion of my
English county garden, I invited the neighbours
from across the road to pop in for a few drinks
and fired up the chimenea.
The blog that followed was straight out of the
pages of a Dickensian novel. The Americans
swooned as they read that we huddled around
with our warmed pimms because they didn’t need
to know the reality. The reality of four friends
drinking hot chocolate and picking broken pottery
out of our hair. It would appear that 1. You need
to line the bottom with sand before you start
setting things alight inside and 2. You probably
shouldn’t use it if it’s been stood out there on
the rain. We figured the porous ceramic and the
rapidly expanding water was the clincher!

With the earthquake hitting Japan,
our world is literally shattered. The
certainty of lying on a solid floor is gone.
I watched as a lady was shown on TV ,
literally hugging the earth, and finding
little comfort from an earth that could no
longer be counted on to support her.
As human beings we crave certainty. We like
to know who we are, where we work and live
and who will always be in our lives. It is where
we find our identity and self esteem. So what
happens when our certainty is threatened? If
your marriage falls apart or you lose your job, it
can throw into question your very identity and it
is easy to lose your way.
When Andy first came to me, he was feeling
lost. The effects of divorce and bankruptcy had
left him demoralised, overweight and living in
a cluttered home. He knew that if he could just
work out what he wanted to do with his life, he
would be OK. Sometimes when we have tried
and tried to resolve a problem with our brain,

the only answer that remains is to finally give
up listening to our thoughts and to embrace the
message of our heart. On that level Andy trusted
his intuition and “knew” that I could help him.
With no money left, he took an enormous risk (
and not one that I would recommend); he used
a credit card at the cash machine to pay for the
four coaching sessions with me. He trusted that
by the end of those four sessions, he would be
clear on his path forward.
At the end of session four Andy thanked me.
“Marie-Claire”, he said, “ I feel so much better
than I did a month ago. I have lost weight,
decluttered my home, and I have more energy.
Now if only I was clear on what I wanted to do
with my life….!” Andy had missed an action
from session 3. As soon as he completed that
action, he realised what he was meant to do.
Andy is now a fully trained Debt Coach, and his
life experiences help him to relate beautifully
with his clients. He is also now earning a decent
income as well as helping others turn their lives
around.
Would he have got there by himself ?
Maybe.
Einstein is quoted as saying,” We
cannot solve our problems with the
same thinking we used when we created
them.” If you are at a crossroads in
your life, it helps to work with someone
to get yourself back on track. We are
incredibly fortunate not to be living in
the centre of an earthquake. But if your
world has been rocked, make sure you
ask for help.

pring has really come for these
smiling thespians from Chester
Operatic Society seen here rehearsing
their latest production of ‘My Fair Lady’!
My Fair Lady was a raving success from the moment
it opened in New York on March 15th 1956, now in
the 21st century it is still one of the most loved musi-
cal romances.
Chester Operatic Society is really going to town on
a special production of this marvelous musical. This
is the society’s debut performance in Wrexham and
so they have chosen to present for their new audience
what promises to be a spectacular show for this special
‘Year of Culture’.
The longest running musical of all time, set in
Edwardian England the story tells of Henry Higgins,
a misogynistic, snobbish professor of phonetics who
agrees to a wager with his friend Colonel Pickering, that he can transform a flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, and make her
acceptable in high society. When he succeeds, the young aristocrat, Freddie Eynsford-Hill, falls madly in love with her.

Two-wheeled festival of fun

Hundreds of people came along to the Cycle Fest at the
New Scene playing fields and took part in loads of activities.
Organised by Cheshire West and Chester Council, the cycle fun
day welcomed cyclists and people keen to start riding for the first time.
The M.A.D Mountain bike display team, cycle try-outs, circus entertainment and vintage
bike displays were just some of the attractions during the day. Stalls offered advice on
cycling in the area including local cycling groups, cycle shops, cycling maintenance
information and free bike marking.
Over 300 cyclists took part in the family cycle rides organised throughout the day. The fully
booked led rides followed a four mile and eight
mile route through the Chester countryside.

Manager, said: “We are so pleased at the
number of people who took part in the cycle
rides and other activities taking place on the day
and the positive feedback we received.”
The Cycle Chester project has been running
for nearly three years, helping to make cycling a

Hoole Lawn Tennis Club
will be enticing beginner
and improving tennis
players to Alexandra Park
this summer with a series
of coaching sessions and
open days.
The activity starts on
Sunday, 1st May when the
park will play host to a free
tennis session from 2pm
until 4pm. Rackets and
balls will be provided free
of charge on the day and is
open to children and adults
of all ages to attend. During
this session participants will
get an opportunity to learn
about the coaching sessions
that will continue throughout
the summer.

activity is aimed at
increasing awareness of and
participation in tennis in the
Chester area, and is building
on the success of a pilot
scheme held in June and
July last year,” said Council’s

tennis coaching will start
at 4pm with a session for
children in school years 3
to 6 from 4pm to 5pm and
school years 7 to 9 from
5pm to 6pm.
It is then the adults turn
from 6pm with two Back 2
Tennis sessions – the first
from 6pm to 7pm and the
second from 7pm to 8pm.
Sessions will then continue
on a weekly basis on the
same day and same time.
The coaching sessions will
run in courses of 5 weeks
starting on 4th May, 15th
June and 20th July. There
will be a charge of £10
payable in advance for each
five-week course.
There are further free tennis
sessions on 12th June, 10th
July and 4th September.

May is when gardens are often at
their best with fresh new leaves
and beautiful flowers on shrubs
and perennials. Tender annuals
can usually be planted out in
borders or in pots without fear of
frost damage. The first salads are
often ready to eat and vegetables
are growing.
Rhododendrons and Azaleas are flowering
throughout May but require a lime free acid
soil and grow well under tall trees provided
the soil does not dry out. Low growing
varieties such as Yakushimanum hybrids
will give a dome shaped shrub covered in
bell shaped flowers in a range of colours.
Another small shrub, up to 4ft, is Exochorda
macrantha The Bride which has arching
stems covered with white flowers. This is easy
to grow given a sunny position and can be cut
back after flowering if it grows too large.
Peonies are at their best in May and will
bulk up over a period of years to give you
a magnificent display. Cut blooms for
indoors to appreciate their flowers at close

white or pink flowers and silvery leaves.
It will flower again if you cut off the dead
flowers. For upright accents in a border try
Iris sibirica with their fleeting but gorgeous
flowers in shades of blue, white and deep
purple.
It should be safe to plant out courgettes
and tomatoes. Also sow seeds of French and
runner beans, and peas either in pots for
planting out later or directly into the soil.
Making small but repeat sowings of carrots
and salads will keep you supplied throughout
the summer.
Now is the time to plant up pots filled
with colourful annuals. Use a soil based
compost such as John Innes No3 mixed
about two thirds JI No3 and one third of
grit, vermiculite or a lighter compost to
give the plants good drainage. Adding the
recommended amount of water retaining
granules should mean that the pots do not
dry out as fast in hot weather. Plant densely
with upright and trailing plants – perhaps
adding a tomato plant such as Tumbler for an
unusual and edible touch!

These days everywhere you look people are talking about food. The
rise of the cookery show is a modern phenomenon and it seems no
matter what time you put the TV on there is a celebrity chef talking
about food and how you should best cook it!!
Recently we have just has the Chester Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festival, the
title in itself, reflects how important we view food and drink in the 21st century!
It has been suggested that the tremendous excess of food in the West has
raised our awareness of food and led a new and obsessive food culture. Food
has become one of the modern modes of self-expression as both young and
old make how and where they shop, cook, and eat a substantial part of self-

is also our most basic cultural commodity—contrary to those who argue that language plays such a role. Without
language it is hard to nurture, create, and provide for more culture; without food, it is impossible.
I’m sure we have all experienced one of those delightful evening when we have gathered with good friends or
family over a wonderfully cooked meal and we have a great conversation with laughter and discussion, these
evenings leave us with a great memories, we feel nourished not just physically but
emotionally and socially too!! Food is great way to help lower barriers and provide
a context to meet people, one of the reasons where I think the Alpha Course is so
successful not just here in Hoole but right across the UK is that every evening starts
with a meal together. Jesus himself knew the importance of food and how it would
feature in his ministry, on 2 occasions he feeds over 4,000 people, via a miracle, with
small portions of bread and fish, he goes to so many parties that the religious leaders
started to criticise him saying he was a drunk and glutton and the last time he spent
time with all his disciples before he was executed was over a meal we call the Last
Supper.
So where is all this leading me, firstly, let me remind you that with all this talk of
food and the ease of accessibility to a full range of food don’t forget to give thanks
for all that we can eat and enjoy, I make my practice whenever I eat a meal to
take a moment to give thanks for my daily bread; secondly exercise some self
discipline, it is so easy to over indulge all the time and to see our weight and
waistline increase, 60% of adults and 31% of children in the UK are over weight,
this is not good. Healthy eating has to be the way ahead and keeping away from
fast food! Finally let me invite you to The Big Lunch, this is to be held on Sunday
5th June in Alexandra Park on Panton Rd at 1pm. It’s a bring your own picnic
and blanket and come and join others from Hoole in what could be the largest
picnic in Hoole for 2011. I’m sure you’ll meet some new friends as well some old
friends and in the process let’s make Hoole a friendlier place to live in!!

New Scene Live Youth Centre

REGULAR events at the New Scene Live Youth New Scene building,Newton Lane, Chester
Live! (a small charity) established in 1993, enables children, young people and young adults of all
abilities to become active and valued citizens. The Live! organisation offers opportunities for these
children and young people to interact with their peers, have fun and feel valued. Activities seek to
address individual specific needs and provide opportunities for personal development in positive
life and social skills.

Stop for a refreshing drink during you walk or cycle ride - At the moment the café is open on
Mondays from 11 till 2 (ish) and then again on Thursday mornings from 10.30 till about 12.30. If
there was a call for it though, it could open at other times Monday to Friday.
The evenings are busy with the following activities -
Monday and Tuesday – Dance Intension, 5 till 9 on Monday and 4 till 6.30 on Tuesday. Dance
includes Ballet, Tap and Streetdance. Age varies (approx 7 to 18 years) For further info please ring
