Stewardship of the Good News
Hope. It’s almost impossible to describe. If I am to be honest, I dread the inevitable question from confirma-
tion students, when we talk about the hope of Easter – ―What do you mean by Hope?‖. The newer McDon-
ald’s commercial pops into my head: the voice-over says, ―There’s something new in your happy meal, it’s
hope‖ and the kid looks at the camera with a puzzled expression and asks, ―hope?‖ It’s the same blank stare
I get on that Wednesday night.

A lot of us tend to equate hope with optimism. Optimism has nothing to do with what is actually happening
around us, it’s based on how we interpret it. It takes a look at the world and creates its own rose-colored per-
spective.

We see the good in bad situations, we think that good will always win over evil, and that life is generally
pretty great just the way it is – and it’s only getting better. We look forward to the future, trusting that good
things are in store. There’s nothing wrong with optimism, it’s just not the same thing as hope.

Hope on the other hand is based on reality. It sees the homeless, the abused, the oppressed, the suicidal, and
knows that all these things will someday be healed, someday be restored, and someday we all will be re-
newed. Hope is the confident expectation, the sure certainty that what God has promised in the Bible is true,
and will come to be in God’s timing.

As Christians, we have the sure and certain hope that we are freed from sin and death as we are joined to
Christ in baptism. There will be a day when we will cry no more, when grieving and emptiness will be gone,
when we will worship with joy and live eternally in God’s presence. See that is the Easter Promise, the Hope
of Easter. The Tomb is Empty, He is Risen to give us Hope.

And with this hope in our hearts, our values start to align with heavenly ones, our love for others reflects
God’s love, we find joy and peace in God’s promises and God’s forgiveness. We’re lifted to a whole new per-
spective, and start living as people expecting something greater.

So a blessing for you as you go about living your faith: in the words of Romans 15:13, ―May the God of hope
fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the
Holy Spirit.‖

In Christ’s peace,
~Pr. Matthew
