Need a Summer Au Pair?
As a family business we know only too well the difficulties of finding the right type of childcare
especially in the school holidays. Life can be a continuous juggling act between work commitments
and family priorities. Having an Au Pair is a very cost effective way of solving this problem either for
the summer holidays or longer periods.
What can an Au Pair do for you?
Your Au Pair will be prepared to work between 25 - 35 hours per week for which they receive pocket
money from the Host Family, usually £70 - £120 per week. They are expected to help with the
children and be responsible for some basic general household duties such as washing & ironing,
cooking for the children and keeping things generally tidy. They are that ‘other pair of hands’ one so
desperately needs these days when running a busy home.
What you can do for your Au Pair……
As the Host Family you are inviting a foreign person into your home on a cultural exchange. Your
Au Pair should be treated like a member of the family or the daughter of a family friend, and should
be provided with nice accommodation and food as well as the opportunity to improve their English,
preferably through a local college.
As members of British Au Pair Agencies Association (BAPAA), we abide by their recommended
code of conduct, and all our procedures meet the regulations and requirements of the Home Office.
Our Au Pairs are recruited through our sister organisation, the International Au Pair Agency (IAPA).
Their recruitment process is stringent, ensuring that every applicant is thoroughly vetted for our
families.
The Agency takes great care to try and match the requirements and preferences of both the Host
Family and the Au Pair, and is always available to give advice and assistance to both parties during
the period of the placement.

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL AT LAST!
NEWSLETTER
AT LAST!
Sharp eyed Tarporley residents might have noticed that we now have some dog
bins in the village. They are situated in Park Road, covering the Long Hollands
footpath and the Plantation, and at the Bowmere Road and Eaton Road junctions
with Walkers Lane. They are dark green in colour, hence blending well with their
surroundings but, by the same token, are not readily visible.
We have campaigned for these for many years now. If they are well used there
will be justification for requesting for more so please, dog walkers, seek them out

On the trail of heroes
and villains in Kelsall The ninth annual Kelsall Scarecrow
Trail will run from Saturday 28th May to
Sunday 12th June.
As in previous years, there will be
two categories in which to enter your
scarecrow(s): Traditional or this year’s
theme: ‘Heroes & Villains’.
Organisers need as many people as
possible to build a scarecrow, large

success. There will be prizes for the
best scarecrows, with the winners being
announced at Kelsall Primary School’s
Summer Fair on 18th June.
Please help to support the school by
entering a scarecrow. Application forms
are available from Kelsall CP School,
the Co-op, Holmes Pharmacy and
Duttons Butchers. It is completely free
to enter a scarecrow.
For more information about the 2011
Kelsall Scarecrow Trail Guide, please

approximately 500 copies this year. If
you have any questions relating to the

Drumming up support for new class

AFRICAN drumming classes are taking place every week in Kelsall. All the classes are led
by Sekou Kompo from Guinea Conakry and you are guarnteed an authentic, traditional
approach to African Drumming.
Sekou Kompo is now teaching on Saturdays from 3-5pm at Kelsall Methodist Church, on
Chapel Bank, and on Tuesdays 7-9pm at Wesley Methodist Church, at St John’s Street,

Sekou said: “Drumming is a universal form of expression that transcends all boundaries
and it is a way of breaking down barriers with non-verbal communication. Drumming brings
people together in a fun and creative way and it actually relieves stress!”
The classes are open to anyone from complete beginners to advanced players.

Castle
abseil
for a
good
cause
A charity is offering the
chance to get a bird’s eye view
of the Cheshire countryside to
raise money for local wildlife.
Cheshire Wildlife Trust is
asking the public to join them
for an abseil of Peckforton
Castle’s imposing gatehouse
to raise money for creatures
including otters and water
voles, along with their Living
Landscape community project and other work throughout the county.
The drop of almost 70ft begins with an impressive and commanding view on the castle roof
that has been enjoyed for over 150 years, and one that is often only available to the castle’s
many birds of prey.
Bic Beaumont, the Trust’s Events Officer, (pictured) will be joining those going ‘over the
top’ on the day. She said: “I have done a little climbing myself, so I’m more used to going up
things rather than down, but this is a superb location for the abseil and a great chance to
enjoy the early summer view across the woodland and open countryside before making your
way down this stunning building”.
Professional climbers will be on hand to ensure all nerves are steadied and everyone has a
safe and enjoyable experience. There will also be lots of opportunities to watch those taking
part from the castle grounds below.
All equipment is provided and no previous experience is necessary – although a head for
heights is bonus! The abseil lands on a large grassed area in the castle grounds.
For more information on how to take part on Sunday 8th May and to get a sponsorship
form, contact Bic Beaumont at Cheshire Wildlife Trust on rbeaumont@cheshirewt.org.uk or
07837 988 477.

l Karen Hanson has over 35 years experience in the hair industry and is well respected by
her peers (many of whom have worked at some stage in their careers alongside her). Her
dedication and passion for hair and cutting is as strong now as when she first started as a
wide eyed apprentice at Raymond & Jason’s salon in Upton.
Four years ago, Karen took the decision to open her own Hair and Beauty salon located
at the award winning Gunnery development in the lovely village of Tarvin. It has
proved to be a huge success, largely due to Karen’s infectious passion for providing
her customers with the very highest standards of service, customer care and quality
of treatments.

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett

Q. I want to start using a night cream, but I don’t know what to look for
in a product. Can you help?
A. You don’t say how old you are and what your skin condition is
like which is important in selecting the correct product, so I would
recommend you get a thorough skin analysis to ensure that you are
selecting the correct product.
Night creams are no longer the thick, sticky heavy products that they
used to be and are more correctly labelled as ‘treatment creams’. Take
a look at ‘the right night cream for you’ on www.angelabartlett.co.uk
on the newsletter page for selecting the appropriate product for your
skin type and condition.
The best night creams are light and easily absorbed and
contain a variety of active ingredients that can get to work
on your skin while you sleep. Sleep plays an important part
in your beauty regime, so don’t just apply night cream but
ensure that you get a good night’s sleep too as this is the
time that the body regenerates itself. Adding a few drops
of lavender oil to your pillow and sipping a chamomile tea
before bed can give you a relaxing nights sleep which will
repay you with

Poppy thanks
Tarporley Royal British Legion Branch
would like to thank the people of Tarporley
and the surrounding district for their unfailing
generosity during the Poppy Appeal in
raising the magnificent sum of £8,196.13,
writes Ernest
Boynes.
This is considerably
in excess of the
£7,849.35 raised the
previous year. This
increase will help
to meet the ever
growing call on the
Legion’s Funds to
support casualties
and their families from both the Iraq and
Afghan hostilities, and is due in no small
measure to the considerable effort by the
Poppy Appeal Organiser, Philip Jordan.
Thank you once again, Tarporley and
District!

Fire Cadet Unit opening at
Tarporley Fire Station
Tarporley Fire Station is looking to set up a Fire cadet unit in the village and is
asking young people ages of 13 and 16 years of age to join.
The Station is holding an open evening on 18th May from 7pm until 9pm and any young
people interested in becoming a Cadet should go along and speak to staff and Fire cadets
from neighbouring station, who will also be performing drill displays.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is keen to recruit young people to take part in this
rewarding training scheme, which will not only be fun and enjoyable, but will also give them
the chance to learn new personal and social skills and potentially obtain a professional
qualification.
Kevin Kelly, Cadet Manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Servicesaid, “Our first cadet
unit started in Poynton in 1992 and over the last 18 years they have grown from strength to
strength. Being a cadet with the Service is an excellent opportunity for young people and
gives them the opportunity to develop personally as well as learning about self discipline
and team work.”
As part of a continual training and development programme, the cadets will be provided
with a free fire kit and uniform similar to that worn by firefighters and will take part in a drill
night one evening a week at the fire station in Birch Heath Road, Tarporley.
Drill nights usually last for two hours and include training with firefighting equipment, which
includes hoses, fire appliances and ladder drills as well as other outdoor activities. The
Tarporley drill night will be decided by the cadets, once the group is set up.
Apart from drill nights cadets also take part in additional activities at weekends and during
the school holidays which include residential stays, local camps and national camp trips.
Cadets also fundraise for Ghana projects throughout the year, which includes young people
from the Cheshire Cadet units having the opportunity to go overseas on exchange visits to
help with community projects and to build schools.
Tarporley Fire Cadet unit is being sponsored by URENCO from Ellesmere Port and is being
run by volunteers, supported by firefighters, so if any adults are interested in becoming a
cadet leader for this unit, please get in touch with Kevin Kelly by telephoning 01606 868700.
Anyone who is interested should contact Kevin Kelly on 01244 342449 or email kevin.
kelly@cheshirefire.gov.uk or go along to Tarporley Fire Station on 18th May.

Tarvin theft led police
to ‘career criminal’
TWO police officers have been given awards after catching a thief who had carried
out a burglary in Tarvin.
The Cheshire Chief Superintendent’s commendation was given to Constables Martin Walsh
and Benjamin Kidd.
In November last year high value metals
were stolen in a burglary at business
premises in Tarvin. PCs Walsh and Kidd
had been present in the area the night
before the burglary and had conducted
a stop check on a known thief who was
accompanied by a young woman. He
made an excuse that he was out with his
girlfriend looking for a pub.
When they heard about the burglary the
officers went to the man’s address and
waited for him to return, in the expectation
that he might have the stolen property
with him. The man’s normal method of
operation has never been to return to his Constable Martin Walsh receives his award
home with stolen items.
The officers saw the him begin to unload
metal from his vehicle. He was immediately arrested, together with his woman passenger.
The officers recovered the stolen metal and a quantity of controlled drugs.
The man denied any offences but his female passenger admitted committing the burglary
as well as a previous offence with him at the same premises. In March the man appeared at
Chester Magistrates Court where he was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
The policemen also provided valuable intelligence about this career criminal in the
significant departure from his usual method by using a woman accomplice.

Garden in bloom
Everyone enjoys visiting a garden and there’s no better time than now, when the
spring flowers are at their best. Some of the very best gardens are in the National
Gardens Scheme which has almost 100 gardens in the Cheshire & Wirral region
alone. Admission is rarely more than £4 and children are usually free! Proceeds of
garden openings go to some very good causes, including Macmillan Cancer Support,
Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices and Crossroads Care.
Locally, there’s Long Acre in Bunbury. Located in Wyche Lane, there’s an acre of
unusual plants and trees to explore, plus camellias, magnolias and springtime bulbs
in flower. Admire the roses, pool gardens, small vineyard and exotic conservatory - a
huge variety to satisfy all garden enthusiasts. There are home-made teas and Long
Acre is open 2-5pm. Admission £4, child free.

My Fair Lady was a raving success from the moment

the 21st century it is still one of the most loved musi-

Chester Operatic Society is really going to town on

what promises to be a spectacular show for this special
‘Year of Culture’.
The longest running musical of all time, set in
Edwardian England the story tells of Henry Higgins,
a misogynistic, snobbish professor of phonetics who
agrees to a wager with his friend Colonel Pickering, that he can transform a flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, and make her
acceptable in high society. When he succeeds, the young aristocrat, Freddie Eynsford-Hill, falls madly in love with her.

OutdOOr theatre is the most accessible
and historical performance style and has
always been a memorable way to spend
a summer evening.
Hillbark Players’ bi-annual ‘traditional’
Shakespearean presentations have both
entranced and delighted Wirral audiences
for over forty years. Following their hugely-
acclaimed production of ‘Macbeth’ in 2009,
Hillbark Players return to their comedy
roots with a riotously entertaining staging of
‘Shakespeare’s Sit-Com’, “The Merry Wives
Of Windsor”.
Disguises and complications abound as
love burns a hilarious path through the town,
in a tale complete with manipulative mes-
sengers, secret scandals, jealous husbands
and a final flurry of forgiveness in the Forest
of Windsor.
An Open-Air production in royden Park,

Introducing the
Artery Age Check
Your diet, level of activity and lifestyle all affect how efficiently your heart
pumps precious oxygen-rich blood around your body, keeping cells
functioning properly.
Your heart’s age could be far older than your chronological age, potentially
shortening your life expectancy. But how can you tell what’s going on inside?
Young at Heart offers a simple, safe and non-invasive test. Our revolutionary
new cardiovascular scanner will measure the stiffness of your arteries and
give you an Artery Age for just £48. Results are immediate and are given to
you during the 30 minute consultation.
Should you have reason for concern, we can give you valuable information
about how to take preventative and remedial action.

Inside Out Anti-Ageing Group.
Ancient hilltops all aglow
OVER 350 people gathered on ten different hill tops to take part in the
‘Hillfort Glow’ experiment.
Hillforts are giant man-made defensive enclosures which generally date back to the
Iron Age, around 2,500 years ago. Even after excavation, their function remains a
mystery as we have no written sources dating to that period.
There are many Hillforts in North East Wales and Cheshire which makes it a very
important historical landscape. Two Heritage Lottery Funded Landscape Partnership
Schemes currently run in both North East Wales and in Cheshire to look after six of
these Hillforts each.
The experiment took place at dusk on Saturday 19th March. It was organised by
North East Wales’ ‘Heather and Hillforts’ Project and Cheshire West and Chester’s
‘Habitats and Hillforts’ Project using ten Hillforts on the Sandstone Ridge, the
Clwydian Range, Mynydd-y-Gaer Corwen, Halkyn Mountain and the Wirral at the
Hillforts of:
Maiden Castle (Bickerton Hill), Beeston Castle, Kelsborrow, Helsby Hill, Burton Point,
Moel y Gaer Rhosesmor, Penycloddiau, Moel Arthur, Moel Fenlli and Caer Drewyn.
The ‘Heather and Hillforts’ and the ‘Habitats and Hillforts’ Projects jointly organised
the Hillfort Glow experiment to test whether the Hillforts were able to communicate
between them with the help of local volunteers using light.
Erin Robinson, archaeologist and co-organiser of the experiment, said: “Each Hillfort
sent off a flare at their allotted time and then had to shine their torches to other
Hillforts as they flashed their lights back at them to make the connection.
“By asking the public to be involved, all of the torches together created each Hillfort
to ‘glow’ in the moonlight and we were able to make more connections than we
imagined – some that we were unsure were even possible in the daylight.”
High powered torches were used to signal to other Hillforts rather than fire beacons
which have been used in the past for special events due to the internationally rare
habitat that these Hillforts now sit within.

Tattenhall Music Society present a Memorial Concert celebrating the life of Ken Griffin at The
Parish Church of St. Alban Tattenhall at 6.30pm. The concert will feature a range of music
from all the periods of Ken’s life ... from “circus music to Mozart!!”
Ken relocated to Tattenhall almost 10 years ago and immediately established the Tattenhall
Music Society which held concerts in the Parish Church of St. Alban, Tattenhall. The concerts
soon became an exciting venue for a wide range of artists who Ken would persuade to
perform. Sadly, Ken passed away last June after a long battle with cancer and the whole
community felt the loss. Laura, his partner, together with a dedicated committee, were
determined to continue with Ken’s vision.
All money raised will go towards The Hospice of the Good Shepherd in Chester, Christie
Hospital in Manchester and the Ken Griffin RNCN Flute Prize.

The talk at our meeting on 6th April was entitled ‘Small in a Tall
Person’s World’ and was given by Penny Dean, a remarkable lady
who was born with a condition known Achondroplasia, the most
common form of dwarfism. Penny described in detail her life from
childhood until the present day and how she has coped with the
prejudice and sometimes discrimination shown by some of the
general public. It was felt that her talk was enlightening, and was heart
warming to see Penny and her family succeed in all aspects of life which others often take for
granted.
Our 4th May meeting will involve discussion of the Resolutions for the National Federation’s
AGM, followed by a talk on ‘Climbing Kilimanjaro’ given by Katie Mason. The book club
continues to meet every 6 weeks and the walking group is currently planning May’s holiday
in the Brecon Beacons. Everyone is hoping for a warm sunny day on June 1st for our
Garden Party, to be held at the home of Libby Warriner. New members are always welcome
to meetings at the Peckforton Village Rooms on the first Wednesday of the month starting at
7.30pm.
